Spring Cleaning the Kitchen

Ranked #10,072 in Home & Garden, #127,947 overall

Now is the Perfect Time to Spruce Up

Spring cleaning the kitchen is well worth the effort. You'll get major paybacks in good vibe energy every time you use that busiest room in the house. Sometimes I choose to clean my kitchen all at once, and sometimes in chunks at a time. Easy guidelines on how to do it are included here.

Spring Cleaning the Kitchen

CHUNK 1- Clear the Clutter

Clear the Clutter

Do This First Thing

When you clear the clutter from your kitchen, you will end up with less to organize and keep clean. If your kitchen has too much in it, it can become a tangled mess to contend with every day. Make sure that your kitchen contains only kitchen items, and that you only keep the things you really use. Less stuff equals less work.

What You Need to Clear Kitchen Clutter

Materials:

1. 2 big boxes
2. marker
2. big black trash bag

How to Clear the Clutter

  • 1Label the two big boxes with the marker as "Give Away," and "Put Away."
  • 2Go through each drawer, countertop, and cupboard, one section at a time. Throw away anything that's broken, expired, or that is trash right into the black bag. Do you really need that pan with the scraped off non-stick coating?
  • 3Ask yourself if you need each item. When was the last time you really used a melon-baller? How about that special hot dog cooker? Do you need 4 sets of dishes? Eighteen sauce pans? Anything that is still good, but you just don't use, goes into the "Give Away" box. Anything that is not a kitchen item goes into the "Put Away" box.
  • 4After you have culled out what you don't need, put away the items that don't belong in the kitchen to their proper places. Take the "Give Away" box to the Goodwill store donations. Others can use what was languishing as clutter in your kitchen. You can smile about that.

“Less stuff equals less work.”

CHUNK 2- Clean and Arrange

Clean and Arrange

Clean Each Surface

Now you have only what you truly want and need in your kitchen. It's time to use fresh eyes to clean each surface, then arrange your kitchen items in ways that make them easy to find and use.

What You Need to Clean and Arrange

Materials:

1. spray cleaner
2. paper towels
3. fresh eyes

How to Clean and Arrange Your Kitchen

  1. Working top to bottom, clear off and clean each surface in the kitchen, using spray cleaner and paper towels. Start with the highest cupboard interiors, and door surfaces. Work quickly, going over each shelf and door, high to low. Move everything to clean under it.
  2. Use fresh eyes to analyze how you use your kitchen. It's helpful to me to pretend that the kitchen is not mine, and that I'm seeing it for the first time. Then I think," If this were MY kitchen..."
  3. Arrange kitchen items by where and how they are used. Think about where you want to do prep work like cutting up ingredients. Move the knife block and cutting boards there. Make sure the pots, pans, and potholders are stored close to the stove. All the baking equipment should be stored together. Infrequently used items should be stored up high or farther away from work areas.
  4. Clean all counter top items with your spray cleaner and paper towels.

CHUNK 3- Clean Out the Refrigerator

Tackle the Refrigerator

Clean that Fridge!

A major chunk of spring cleaning the kitchen means cleaning the refrigerator. It's one of those jobs I tend to dread. However, once I do it, I love the results! Nothing beats a sparkly, organized refrigerator. It's hardly ever as bad to just do it as I had imagined it would be. Every time I clean out the fridge, I have a gigantic sense of pride and accomplishment, and I feel less stressed too.

Now, what are you waiting for? Tackle that refrigerator!

What You Need to Clean Out the Refrigerator

Gather materials:

1. rubber gloves
2. dish detergent
3. non-scratch scrubby/sponge
4. bucket of hot water
5. big black trash bag
6. large cooler

How To Clean Out the Refrigerator

  • 1First, take all the magnets and coupons, notices, and kids' drawings, etc. off of the refrigerator exterior. Quickly go through them, checking expiration dates, etc. Do I need it? Has it served its purpose? If in doubt, throw it away.

Wipe down the exterior of the refrigerator with a sponge and warm, soapy water. Clean the rubbery seal on the door too.
  • 2Next, empty one shelf at a time, and throw away anything that is old, moldy, or that you know you will not use, ever. Just dump it right into your big black trash bag. Do the same thing with the door shelves. Get rid of that gooseberry jam from 3 years ago, the tidbit of hardened cheese, and definitely those mystery morsels. Anything questionable is out!

Place all the good food in a cooler while you clean the inside of your fridge.
  • 3Now it's time to pull on the rubber gloves, and wipe down the shelves and sides of the refrigerator with warm sudsy water. Take out vegetable bins and other removable drawers to clean them in the sink. Wipe down the inside of the door after removing door bins. Wash all removable bins in the sink too.

Wipe everything down with cool, clear water afterwards.
  • 4Replace the food into your sparkling, fresh refrigerator. Put all the sandwich makings together, and group other foods together in categories too. Take this opportunity to adjust the height of any shelves that need it.
  • 5Now, follow the same steps for the freezer. Throw away anything that is freezer burned, unmarked, or suspect in any way. Frozen things go bad too.

Safe Plastic Food Storage Containers

I have these, and highly recommend them.

These are made of safe plastic infused with silver particles. Silver is an age old spoiling retardant. They keep food fresh much, much longer than any other containers I've ever had. These have gaskets that make them air tight. You can wash them on the top rack of the dishwasher. Plus, they are rectangular, so they are space efficient in the fridge and cupboard, unlike round containers. They are good for refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and lunch boxes too.

How About Spring Cleaning Your Kitchen?

Will you make a major effort to clean your kitchen this spring?

Loading

No way, Jose. I don't mind a little kitchen grime. (Or maybe, I'll get somebody else to do it for me.)

vallain says:

It gets a good scrub down every other week when the cleaning lady comes. Once in a great while I choose a cupboard to reorganize (like the plastic storage containers or the undersink area). That keeps it from being such an overwhelming job. About 4 times a year, I give the corian countertops a buff-up with some car wax that takes care of any scratches.

I love to make a fresh, clean start each spring. Let me at that kitchen!

scarlettohairy says:

I need to do this. My kitchen is so small and the clutter can easily take over. Great ideas, Joan!

Frischy says:

What a coincidence! My kitchen is getting a major overhaul this week. I have already done the fridge, now I am working on the cabinets. Completely reorganizing everything in the kitchen. It is a big job, but life is going to be so much better when it is complete!

veryirie says:

I definitely need to do this.
