Thursday, October 4th, 2007
On October 4th, 1957 the Soviet Union launched the world's first satellite, named Sputnik - companion of the earth. You are invited to participate in a global party to commemorate the advent of the first truly global radio transmitter and the predecessor of many technological developments which benefit humankind.
Why? - Answer can be found in the Sputik-Gazette which will be produced in 2007 only.
How? - It's up to your imagination. Invite friends for a festive dinner, produce a radio transmission, create a Website using the newest technologies, organize a public commemorating demonstration - all in honor of the Sputnik - and let Francis know, so it can be collected on the official International Sputnik Day website.

This is the real thing!
Quotation of the Day - NYTimes 9/25/07"If it had been God in his chariot that had flown over, I could not have been more impressed. It was awe-inspiring. Sputnik looked like a bright star that moved with such utter purpose that nothing could stop it; and I, in that moment, realized I wanted to be part of the movement into space."

Sputniksong
Minimal techno track and pencil drawing
Sputnik Zemli, companion of the earth. The first part of this work consists of a pop song, which includes the squeaky signal of the Sputnik, the first artificial satellite in earth orbit. The Soviet Union sent the spherical earth satellite into orbit on October 4, 1957 and created a global sensation, which made history as the "Sputnik shock". The fear of the US to be inferior technologically and on a military level, was succeeded by the development of new technologies, which with a few years of delay also benefited the civil sector - for instance the integrated circuit, the global positioning system and the basics of the Internet. On a visual Level the pop song is represented through the wave-form pencil drawing of the audio track. The work deals with the issue, that a lot of today's technologies are cold war developments.
