Examples of square woodturnings

Of all the types of woodturning I believe this is the most dangerous. Imagine a square turning blank spinning around trying to take the skin off of your knuckles. The first time I did this I wasn't too sure I would complete the turning.
There are a number of ways to do this that are less dangerous which I will show in this article.

Big leaf maple burl.

This piece I did the hard way. That is I mounted it to a face plate, mounted it on the lathe and snuck up on it with a nice sharp bowl gouge. YIKES!!
Before you even start a turning like this you must put on ALL your safety gear.
The key to being successful doing this type of turning is having lots of patients and sharp tools. You need to take very small passes.
If you get a catch two things are going to happen. First you will probably tear off one of the corners and second your gouge might end up sticking in the ceiling if you weren't holding on well enough.
Some woodturners loosen the belt on their lathe motors when they do this type of turning. That way if you get a catch the belt slips and the turning stops.
Take your time and take small passes and everything should go well.

Square open segment bowl

This piece is shown on my open segment lens but I believe it qualifies for a spot here also.
This would be near impossible to do on a wood lathe. So, I cheated. I turned this as a round inverted bowl and when I was finished I cut it square on the bandsaw. I used a laser to mark it for the bandsaw cuts. I couldn't think of a way to mark the cuts on the curved surface. I just beamed the laser on the turning and copied the laser line with a pencil line.

Vase with square rim

This is a place where you wouldn't expect to see a square turning. This one I turned the rim round and cut it square after the fact on the bandsaw. This is a piece of spalted birch I found on the side of the road.

Square bowl

This piece I made from a 3/4" walnut board. I glued it up in layers. I added scrap on the outside of the blank which I cut round. After I finished turning the bowl I removed the scrap wood and voila it was square again.
