Less Space Means Less Work

There is nothing better than picking a red ripe tomato or fresh herb from your square foot garden.

No need for pesticides because companion plantings like marigolds, keep the pests away. No hassle weeding. Just use two fingers to pluck them out. Watering is a snap.

Square Foot Gardening is only limited by your imagination. You don't need a lot of space either. If you have space limitation, use containers, like a 5 gallon bucket.

I purchased treated 2' x 8' wood at Home Depot. The garden sections were 4' x 8'. Less cutting means less work. See the pictures below.

Your soil is like a fine gourmet recipe. Stop at your local nursery and ask for help with your soil mixture. I also used the Square Foot Gardening book, below, as my resource.

If you have questions, ask around. Gardeners are a friendly bunch. Or e-mail us and we would love to help you.

In the fall you can add more organic matter like leaves or rich soil from your compost pile.

A benefit of square foot gardening is your seed beds are raised. Raised beds warm up faster in the spring.

Dress the top of each bed in the spring with a bag of organic fertilizer.

Work the organic material into the soil with a spade or fork.

Start dreaming of your garden this winter. Order seed catalogs now and start planning. If you're real ambitious, start your plants in the basement with artificial lights. That is a whole new lens to be published soon.

As the snow flakes fall, page through a seed catalog and start dreaming of your square foot garden this spring.

Happy Square Foot Gardening!

Mel Bartholomew - Introducing Square Foot Gardening

Square Foot Gardening (SFG) is a great way to convert that boring suburbia grass lawn into a sustainable produce isle. Don't have a lawn? That's cool- SFG can be done practically anywhere. Mel was kind enough to send me this DVD which gives a quick intro into SFG. This method is great for the absolute beginner who might be a little overwhelmed by starting that first organic garden. For more information, including including Mel's popular book & instructional DVDs, check out: http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

Square foot gardening - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Square Foot Gardening is the name of a book by Mel Bartholomew and the associated method, which he has helped popularize. The original book was published by Rodale Press in 1981, leading to a PBS television series from 1982-1986, various classes around the world, a web site and a second edition published in 2005. It combines and concepts from other organic gardening methods, including a strong focus on compost, closely planted raised beds and biointensive attention to a small, clearly defined area. Proponents claim that the method is particularly well-suited for areas with poor soil, beginning gardeners or as adaptive recreation for those with disabilities.
