My SquareTrade story begins with the debut of the first iPhone in early 2007. I immediately became a total die hard user and have been hooked ever since. The phone is incredible, but as much as I love the phone, I have found it to be fragile. Also, the phone is very sleek and smooth, making it easy for me to loose my grip and ultimately, i have broken more than a couple.

Now the unfortunate truth that I dealt with was that the stock warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. Actually it doesn't cover a whole lot and I would also recommend that you be weary of Apple's Applecare(will be explained below) protection plan.

So there you are, you just picked your new toy up of the pavement and its smashed into bits. And to make things worse you have no way of replacing it. Well, after experiencing this terrible situation on more than one occasion, I just had to do something to protect myself. Actually it was more like protecting my wallet.

I initially decided to use SquareTrade when I was explaining the lack of coverage from the factory to a friend of mine regarding my iPhone problems, and he suggested that I try the service he had used to insure his phones. My buddy told me that he'd used them before and had a great experience replacing a Google Droid with the accidental damage coverage . So I said why the hell am I paying an arm and a leg for new phones when I could be saving tons? I took the jump from my basic warranty over to the referred provider SquareTrade and signed up for a 3 year warranty.

As you can probably tell by now, sure enough, I managed to break my iPhone once again. This time was even more out of the ordinary, actually it was so out of the ordinary that you probably won't even believe me when I tell you. Well here it goes nothing. So I was in my office and I ran into the bathroom to relieve myself before running to an upcoming meeting. Than as I went to flush the toilet my iPhone managed to somehow slide out of my coat pocket and fell straight in the toilet bowl!

There I was, staring at my recently replaced, shiny new iPhone now spinning around a toilet bowl filled with my own urine. I'm sure you can imagine how frustrated I was at this moment but in the back of my mind I remembered my accidental damage warranty that I'd picked up from SquareTrade.

I actually chuckled to myself and thought that there was no way these guys would give me a new phone. Well at this point I had nothing to loose and I was ready to see how SquareTrade was going to handle the situation.

Later that night I came to find out that SquareTrade is one of the only warrant services that cover full liquid immersion. Hard to imagine right? Of all the popular warranty providers out there, most of them DO NOT provide immersion protection. We're talking Applecare, Bestbuy Geek Squad Protection, Mobile Protect, and several others; all of which would have left me completely in the dog house in this situation.

From there I just followed the steps to make my claim and waited to see what would happen...

I found myself personally inspecting SquareTrades ADH coverage (Accidental Damage from Handling) when my phone dropped in the toilet. This was my first time breaking my iPhone while having my ST warranty in place, so i was skeptic about how the new phone recovery would play out. When I contacted my claims handler, they told me i could have a new phone as soon as five days after they receive my waterlogged phone.

I was surprised to have my phone replaced only seven business days later. I was so glad i chose the ADH service plan for my iPhone instead of the AppleCare's strict no accident coverage plan. Here's the inevitable catch, you must purchase ADH coverage for your device at your initial checkout screen. And unlike the standard warranties provided by SquareTrade you will have a $50 deductible when you process an ADH claim.

I know it can feel like they are trying to push some extra fee on top of your already "great warranty", but the extra protection you gain is much more significant should anything happen. Besides that tidbit of knowledge, too many people would try to buy coverage only after dropping or drowning their phones, this is simply SquareTrade's way of being somewhat street smart and keeping customers honest. I can't stress enough how this can help you protect your valuables, be it your iPhone, laptop, or any other important electronic device.

If your thinking about not getting the ADH, think about how often you hear one of your friends talk about needing a new phone because they broke theirs. I bet more than a couple people come to mind. As long as your phone doesn't get stolen, your basically going to be 100% covered if you decide to go with the top warranty.

The first step is make sure you have computer and Internet access. The entire claim process is done online through Squaretrade's homepage and you should find their platform very user friendly and easy to follow. Make sure you have the receipt for your item on hand if you haven't already sent it to Squaretrade.

As part of Squaretrade's warranty agreement, you must provide a copy of your receipt to validate the warranty claim. You can either do this at the time when you purchase the warranty or at a later date. I highly recommend getting this out of thew way as soon as you can to avoid any complications.

Step 3. Send the receipt for your item to Squaretrade either through fax or scan

Step 4. Follow the rest of the instructions provided and print out your shipping label

One thing that I really like about Squaretrade is their 5 day service guarantee. What this means is you are guaranteed to get a reimbursement or a new phone within 5 days of your claims initial process date. Keep in mind this is 5 business days from the date Squaretrade receives your broken item. (My experience took 7 business days!)

So if you send your broken iPhone to Squaretrade and it gets there on a Wednesday, you're guaranteed to have a resolution by the following Wednesday. This is something you definitely won't find with other warranty companies and in-store offers. Its quite comforting knowing that you will have your item working again or be reimbursed in under a week.

• Mechanical and electrical failures that occur during normal use of your item. Your item is covered for up to the full purchase price of your item (tax and shipping are excluded).

Special Notes about ADH Coverage

ADH stands for accidental damage when handling and covers drops, liquid spills, submergence or any other "accidental" damage. I know accidental is kind of a lose term but they will honestly replace just about anything. As long as you don't baseball pitch your phone at the wall, you should be good to go.

**Important Side Note** Squaretrade's warranties do not require a deductible but with and ADH claim there is an automatic $50 deductible.

Refund Policy

Squaretrade provides a very generous return policy allowing you to take a full refund on your warranty within 30 days of your purchase. If you happen to go over the 30 days you can still receive a refund for the pro rated amount left on your warranty. This can be very nice if you decide to return you item after purchasing your warranty.

Are Squaretrade Warranty's Fully Transferable?

Yes, you can easily transfer a warranty to a new owner if you decide to sell an item you still have under a Squaretrade warranty. This entire process can be done directly through your Squaretrade.com personal account.

For the different warranty packages, Amazon had an average of around 90% for 5 star reviews. Yet another sign that SquareTrade is legit, and for the most part Amazon users are usually a tough crowd.

It is a fact that the Apple line of products has evolved from the original work based platform into the top echelon of high tech hardware. What the good people at Apple seem to have forgotten to budget for a full coverage warranty. The AppleCare plan comes straight from Apple, but somehow accidental damage is not in the warranty option. Aside from SquareTrades Accidental Damage from Handling, or ADH, additional coverage, all drops and spills are covered. Cup of coffee on your MacBook Pro? COVERED!

Using specifically the iPhone as an example for a moment; the service options from SquareTrade still cost about $30 more for the 2 year warranty. Thing is AppleCare doesn't cover drops and accidental damage, where in the same breakage situation SquareTrade would charge a $50 deductible and you would have a new phone. If you do have the full plan from ST on any of your devices, they are even protected from full water submersion. I have to give an honest recommendation to SquareTrade in the AppleCare debate.

2. Outselling the many online warranty services was an impressive start, but now many reviewers state that SquareTrade is a better service than many of the product manufacturers warranty plans.

From my own experience with the reliability of SquareTrade, I would strongly advise protecting your electronics with the ADH warranty plan. This is truly what I found to separate them from the competition. Not many services offer accident coverage, and if they do the rates don't match up to SquareTrades deductible. Being the top rated warranty vendor on many of the webs biggest sales pages also speaks volumes to inquiring browsers. The quickness i received my new phone was impressive too, taking less than one business week.

There are alternatives, don't get me wrong, but when everything is laid out so clearly in front of you, everywhere you look, how can you ignore the facts? SquareTrade looked out for me, and a million others I'm sure, so you can trust that they will do the same for you.
