As one of the SquidAngels (January-March, 2010), as the previous Angel of the Culture & Society: Spirituality: Spiritual Awareness neighborhood and the Angel of the Culture & Society: Religion: Religious Education neighborhood (we're no longer assigned to neighborhoods), I created this page just for you. You'll learn what and who the SquidAngels are. You'll learn what makes up a great bless-worthy lens. You'll know what to do to receive a blessing. And you'll have some resources to help you create great lenses that are more likely to receive blessings from SquidAngels. So, enjoy! And have fun creating great lenses!

SquidAngels are lensmasters who promote the best lenses on Squidoo and have some special powers to reward those great lenses by "blessing" them.

Blessing a lens means they give it the "thumbs up" and indicate to the "powers that be" that the lens is great. When a SquidAngel blesses one of your lenses, its LensRank goes up a bit. This helps great lenses to rise to the top.

The Angels' special powers also allow them to "ding" the junk (e.g. lenses that go against Squidoo's terms of service, "spammy" lenses, lenses of particularly poor quality). Dinging gives a lens the "thumbs down" and moves it further down in rank.

SquidAngels have had various roles and assignments over the years. Currently, we're able to bless any lenses in any category we choose.

There are some basic things that are important in a great lens in general (not just to SquidAngels). And there are some things specific to me that I look for when I give a blessing. They're things that make a lens stand out to me or let me know that the creator of the page put a lot into it.

So, here are the elements of a high-quality lens that I look for:

  • A bio picture (avatar) that shows who you are (replace the default image).

  • A bio blurb that describes you and may even be specific to the topic of the page (replace the default bio statement).

  • An attractive format (e.g. HTML/CSS, great images, awesome color scheme).

  • Images that are allowed and referenced (e.g. public domain, non-commercial).

  • Titles that you have written (replace the default titles).

  • Well-written content that's in your own words, or cited if you're quoting from a source.

  • Excellent grammar & punctuation (please proofread).

  • Passion.

  • Text/information that's written personally.

  • A variety of relevant modules.

  • Professional selling (i.e. not "spammy").

  • Meaning (e.g. topics that make the world a better place).

  • A guest book so that your visitors can contribute and interact.

  • Other interactive elements.

  • Generosity (e.g. featuring other relevant lenses).
