No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it

It takes more than a group to play a symphony - it takes a good group!

As individuals, we make a commitment to a group effort, that's what makes a team work, it's what makes a society work. These are our squid groups, not just a collection of random lenses thrown together any old how, but cohesive teams with a united focus and a united front.

Come on in, look around at our groups, see what challenges and contests we're up to at the moment, vote for your own lens or for someone else. Keep up to date and at the same time keep your group (and yourself) on top!

(The nicest thing about working together is knowing that other people are on your side)

Group Renovations - Spring Cleaning the Teams

A lot of work has gone into shaking up the groups, lenses which may have been accepted before are now judged to a stricter standard. Submission Guidelines are even stricter than they were previously. If your lens is in one of these groups it means you've passed a meticulous examination marked by stringent criteria.

Group Awards have already commenced and you'll be seeing a lot more of those soon. Winners will be announced and placed on the Group itself as well as here.

Apart from the Group Awards, more tangible prizes are in the pipeline. Stay tuned

Group - Wander Downunder

Downunder Awards

Downunder Awards
Each month, Wander Dowunder presents an award to the most popular lens in a particular category. The winner is chosen by popular vote.

Last month, our first Award went out. The category was Places in Australia and the winner was lensmaster Charlyjl for her hometown lens. She's a proud Canberran!

Downunder April Winner

Downunder May Winner

Group - Goddess

Goddess Awards

The Goddess Group presents awards for the finest of our lenses.

The first award has been presented to Granny Sage for her lovely entry on Ostara and the Vernal Equinox.

The Award for Granny Sage was wreathed in Spring blooms as befitting the seasonal nature of her topic.

Goddess Group April Winner

Group - Feathers, Fur and Fin

My old cat, lensmaster Vladimir, has taken over as Team Leader for an Animal group.

Feathers, Fur & Fin Award

Vladimir has graciously decided to present his first Award to the lenses dealing with dogs.

This will be the first of many (he assures me) and each month he will suggest a new theme. If your lens is among these, don't forget to vote. If you have a horse lens, for example, or a goldfish training How-To, you can still vote for your favourite doggy lens.

Winners for April and May

Group - Bookworms

The Bookworms Award

The Bookworms Award is presented monthly to the best lens in a particular category. If you're one of the Bookworms, vote for your favourite here. Is your own lens one of the contestants?

The Bookworms is a flourishing group, and a very busy one. If you have submitted a lens and still waiting to hear back, please understand that submissions come in thick and fast, approximately 30 every day. We will get to you.

Group - Epicure

Epicure Awards

Each month Epicure presents its own Gourmet Award for the most popular lens in a category in this collection.

May Best of Regional Recipes went to Auntie KatKat for her Tagines, the Taste of Morocco
April The sweet-tooth selection went to lensmaster Paula Atwell for her home-baked chocolate chip cookie recipes.

A Truly Civil Society

Competing against each other leaves little space for reciprocity and the growth of social capital.

Running against another in a race may benefit our speed, but jointly organising the sports day produces cooperation and trust. There are many situations where cooperation and reciprocity are more effective than competition.

Civic virtues come from building on what we have in common rather than by using our differences to create in-groups, outgroups and fear driven competition

Eva Cox : Boyer Lectures 1995: a Truly Civil Society

Teamwork - What you can do

Group Members are encouraged to visit the other lenses in their group. You can visit lenses from other Teams of course, but please pop over and say hello to a couple of other members of your Team.

If everyone visits and comments on just two other lenses in their group, the lenses - and therefore that group - goes up higher in ranking, it attracts the higher quality lenses, more visitors and we all bask in the glory.

(At any rate, it boosts our members and that's glorious enough).

It will take you 10 minutes maximum and, in this way, we all benefit.

10% of my income goes to continue the work of Fred Hollows in treating avoidable blindness and improving indigenous health.

Blindness is a significant public health issue in Cambodia. Over 160,000 people are blind and an additional 20,000 become blind each year. The main cause of blindness is cataract, which can be treated by a simple 15 minute operation at an average cost of $25 (AUD$35).
