I am an artist and have an appreciation for the cave-man arts, so without any further ado, let me show you the Neanderthal Art on Squid 50. Please know that I do not claim expertise on this subject but I do claim pure enjoyment and admiration of Neanderthal art, and I like to share my fascinations.

Welcome, to Neanderthal Art and Clipart!
Neanderthals lived in the Last Glacial age for a span of about 100,000 years. B.C.

Not much is known about the early species of man, but there are more findings being discovered. The glacial period damaged, erased, and destroyed many of the Neanderthal site locations. Countries where Neanderthal remains have been discovered include Europe and Western Europe, Central Europe and the Balkans. Then there are some sites that have been found in the Ukraine, that I read about years ago, and also in western Russia and outside of Europe in the Zagros Mountains and more fossils were found in the Levant. And, to my knowledge, Neanderthal fossils sites were found in Gibraltar. To this date, I'm not sure of any other places of where their fossils were found, but I would be so bold as to say that more Neanderthal sites are yet to be discovered. Take a look at the site map below where of fossils have been found. - Curated from Wikiepedia

Neanderthal Man Pictures
A Caveman is a popular stock character based upon stereotyped concepts of the way in which early prehistoric humans or humininans may have looked and behaved. The term caveman is something used colloquially to refer to Neanderthals or Cro-Mognon (Homo sapiens of the Paleolithic era). The term has been discouraged in serious use, because of its inaccuracy and dependence on certain misconceptions about early humans.Neanderthal on Wikipedia
Neanderthal DNA has been recovered from individual skeletons at a few sites, including Feldhofer Cave in Germany, Vindija Cave in Croatia, and Mezmaiskaya Cave in Russia.
The Neandertal is a small valley of the river Dussel in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. During mining operations, the bones of the original Neanderthal man were found in a cave.

Of Archaeological and Social Importance

Discoveries dating back 40,000 years have been found in caves of the existence of humans habitation. Items of value were placed in a cave to be protected them from the climatic elements and predators, making some caves virtual treasure mines.
To me, this rock painting is a representation of someone who was thought highly of. Maybe it was someone who had even died and the artist wanted to remind them self of a dearly departed one.

Altamira Cave - Preseved - Guided Tours Only

The rock paintings inside of Altamira Cave are very well done. The neanderthal artist who lived there found great pleasure in creating works of art that are painted on the ceiling of the cave and walls. He must have had a fondness for this per-historic bull looking creature, because he illustrated them many times. Whatever his reason was ... I'm glad he left his impressions.

Caves are where neanderthals would dwell.

Neanderthals certainly were the first people on this earth to go caving and exploring under the earths surface. Caves must have held much more meaning to them then, as they provided shelter and a place to live and raise their young. Squid 50 does not have a lot of cave images. Stone Age Art Pieces
The oldest Neanderthals were most likely scavengers, who recovered food from animals that had made a kill. By the late Middle Paleolithic, Neanderthals are believed to have become adept with using a spear at close range for hunting.
The group of stone tools associated with the Neanderthals in the Middle Paleolithic (over 40,000 years ago) are called by archaeologists "Mousterian lithic" tradition, which includes a tool making technique called Levallois; later they are associated with the Chatelperronian lithic tradition. Tools created were not for all purpose, but rather for specific tasks. Later the addition of bone and antler as raw materials was used. Mousterian tools were used both by early modern humans, and Neanderthals.

The Stone Age figurine was unearthed at Zaraysk, Russia. It looks like a pregnant woman, the back view strongly suggests female hips. Of course it could be a paunchy man.
There were two figurines found. They were both carefully buried. Each of the figurines was covered with the shoulder bone of a mammoth. If the first thing a Stone Age Man does with gained technology is carve a woman, he might be more like us then we think.

Just 28,000 years ago, the blink of an eye in geological time, the last of Neanderthals died out in their last outpost, in caves near Gibraltar. Thanks to cartoons and folk accounts we have a distorted view of these other humans - for that is what they were. We think of them as crude and clumsy and not very bright, easily driven to extinction by the lithe, smart modern humans that came out of Africa some 100,000 years ago. - If the word "visual art" were to describe a process where an image evokes emotions of a pleasurable kind and also initiates a chain of imaginative thoughts related to it that have a significant component of wonder and curiosity, then yes, pre-historic asrt is surely lovable. It is all the more wonder-filled when we realize that pre-historic people had very limited means of artistic expression when compared with what is available to us today.
