Cave Art and Rock Painting by Neanderthals

From before written history humans have expressed their experiences, sightings and passions with beautiful illustrations in the form of art. Prehistoric art!

Art has been around since they, we gained technology to create cave art and sculptures, and other forms. I hope enjoy the Neanderthal Art!

I am an artist and have an appreciation for the arts.

Without any further ado, let me show you the all new Squid 50th lens re-built!

Welcome, to Squid 50!

My 50th Lens

Prehistory is Anonymous!

A Caveman is a popular stock character based upon stereotyped concepts of the way in which early prehistoric humans or humininans may have looked and behaved. The term caveman is something used colloquially to refer to Neanderthals or Cro-Mognon (Homo sapiens of the Paleolithic era). The term has been discouraged in serious use, because of its inaccuracy and dependence on certain misconceptions about early humans.

Prehistoric is a term use to describe periods before written time. The term was introduced into English by Daniel Wilson in 1851. Prehistory can be said to date back to the beginning of the universe itself; although the term is used mostly to describe periods when there was life on earth.

It is my hope that I can bring tribute to the neanderthals on Squid 50.

Taino petroglyphs in a Cave in Puerto Rico

Of Archaeological and Social Importance

Discoveries dating back 40,000 years have been found in caves of the existence of humans habitation. Items of value were placed in a cave to be protected them from the climatic elements and predators, making some caves virtual treasure mines.

To me, this rock painting is a representation of someone who was thought highly of. Maybe it was someone who had even died and the artist wanted to remind them self of a dearly departed one.

Stone Age Art!

The Stone Age figurine was unearthed at Zaraysk, Russia. It looks like a pregnant woman, the back view strongly suggests female hips. Of course it could be a paunchy man.

There were two figurines found. They were both carefully buried. Each of the figurines was covered with the shoulder bone of a mammoth. If the first thing a Stone Age Man does with gained technology is carve a woman, he might be more like us then we think.

A neanderthal painting in Snow Hawk Cave

Altamira Cave - Preseved - Guided Tours Only

The rock paintings inside of Altamira Cave are very well done. The neanderthal artist who lived there found great pleasure in creating works of art that are painted on the ceiling of the cave and walls. He must have had a fondness for this per-historic bull looking creature, because he illustrated them many times. Whatever his reason was ... I'm glad he left his impressions.

Cave Painting! A very decorative piece of art!

In Australia's Kimberly region this beautifully done cave painting dated from the last Ice Age about 20,000 to 25,000 years ago decorates a cave's wall with flying fox bats. This species is believe to now be extinct. The photo was taken by Dr. Jack Pettigrew and his team.

A panel of art on the side of a bluff!

This rock art is high on a bluff overlooking the Pecos River in Texas. It is said to depict the hunt for sacred peyote, a powerful medicinal and sacramental plant. It is a ritual re-enactment of the first pilgrimage that led to the birth of gods, the establishment of the seasons and the creation of the cosmos. - It is a very lovely expression of art that needs to be preserved!

The Neanderthal Humans Were Pretty Smart

A News Paper Rock Petroglyph!

This pictured Newspaper Rock art is near Canyonlands National Park, south of the Moab, in south eastern Utah.

Petroglyph is an image carved into the surface of a rock, an engraving that is done by pecking or abrading. Petroglyphs are found world wide and are often associated with prehistoric people, but not always.

Pictograph is an image painted or drawn on a rocks surface.

Petroforms are shapes and patterns made by many large rocks and boulders placed over the ground, they are quiet different also.

Petroglyphs, pictographs, and petroforms are all art.

Someone Had Something To Express...

I would like to point out the human like forms with the heads of animals and legs with hoofs. My interruption on Squid 50. - It is a ceremonial celebration illustration of a hunt for food, where they killed a per-historic creature to survive.

Neanderthals...

The Neanderthal (, ), or ), or Neandertal, is an extinct member of the Homo genus that is known from Pleistocene specimens found in Europe and parts of western and central Asia. Neanderthals are either classified as a subspecies of humans (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) or as a separate species (Homo neanderthalensis). The first proto-Neanderthal traits appeared in Europe as early as 600,000?350,000 years ago. Proto-Neanderthal traits are occasionally grouped to another cladistic 'species', Homo heidelbergensis, or a migrant form, Homo rhodesiensis. By 130,000 years ago, complete Neanderthal characteristics had appeared. These characteristics then disappeared in Asia by 50,000 years ago and in Europe by 30,000 years ago. The youngest Neanderthal finds include Hyaena Den (UK), considered older than 30,000 years ago, while the Vindija (Croatia) Neanderthals have been re-dated to between 32,000 and 33,000 years ago. No definite specimens younger than 30,000 years ago have been found; however, evidence of fire by Neanderthals at Gibraltar indicate that they may have survived there until 24,000 years ago. Modern human skeletal remains with 'Neanderthal traits' were found in Lagar Velho (Portugal), dated to 24,500 years ago and controversially interpreted as indications of extensively admixed populations.

Neanderthal stone tools provide further evidence for their presence where skeletal remains have not been found. The last traces of Mousterian culture, a type of stone tool...

Could we have cohabitated ...

Looking out of the mouth of a cave...

Caves are where neanderthals would dwell.

Neanderthals certainly were the first people on this earth to go caving and exploring under the earths surface. Caves must have held much more meaning to them then, as they provided shelter and a place to live and raise their young. Squid 50 does not have a lot of cave images. I would refer you to my Caving lens for an adventure...

A Fossil That is 47 Million Years Old!

Scientists piece together human ancestry
Scientists hailed Tuesday a 47-million-year-old fossil of an ancient "small cat"-sized primate as a possible common ancestor of monkeys, humans and other primates.

"Caving" has Beautiful Cave Pictures

There is no prehistoric art here by Neanderthals, just caves. Very nice cave pictures!

Comments: Do You Love Prehistoric Art?

Its kind of funny how we often hear the word neanderthal used.

What do you think?

It just occurred to me that in 60,000 years, some folks will be digging up our skull fragments and artifacts. I wonder if all those plastic things we use will be broken down by then.[in reply to Tipi]

Very nice lens - 5*. I'm fascinated by the possible interractions between Neanderthal and Cro-Magnons. Did they interbreed? Did Cro-Magnon contribute to Neanderthal extinction? Something else? At least the art you describe brings Neanderthals much "closer to home" so to speak. And thanks for the Irish blessing on your profile and the occassions you've given an open-minded nod to 1 percenters on other lenses. I'm a fan.
