How the Squidoo Community Can Aid Real Communities to Recover

In the spirit of LiveAid, BandAid, FarmAid and Tsunami Aid comes SquidAid, a way for the Squidoo Community to use the Internet to aid survivors of disasters.

While it may be difficult for the Squidoo Community of Lensmasters to stage a major concert, what we can do, as lensmasters is generate SquidAid by making lenses (webpages) that will generate royalties for the Squidoo Charity Fund and other charities that aid survivors of disasters.

Because of the way that Squidoo has been developed and designed, it is very easy for lensmasters to create a webpage or a lens and designate a charity as the recipient of royalties generated from the lens.

SquidAid * Aid Survivors * Build Lenses

Building Lenses to Aid Survivors of Disasters

SquidAid was developed as a concept following the California Wildfires of October 2007 to enable and encourage lensmasters of the Virtual Squidoo community to aid real survivors simply by building Squidoo lenses.

SquidAid was developed for one main purpose:
The purpose of SquidAid is to use the Internet and move quickly to mobilize the virtual Squidoo Community to generate a pool of royalty resources to aid survivors of current and future disasters.
All Squidoo Lensmasters are encouraged to make new lenses or modify existing lenses and choose the royalty option as the Squidoo Charity fund. By choosing the Squidoo Charity Fund the lens will generate royalties for the Squidoo Charity Fund potentially for the life of the lens.

Funds generated from lensmasters participating in SquidAid by donating their royalties to the Squidoo Charity Fund can by used, when needed as SquidAid to benefit survivors of disaster.

Squidoo Fire Aid

Aiding Survivors of the California Fires

The Squidoo Fire Aid is the first recipient of SquidAid.

The response for SquidAid from Headquarters and the Powers that be has already been very generous.

Megan has made a commitment to donate half of the Squidoo Charity Fund's earnings during the months of October and November to Relief Efforts for the fire victims.

All Squidoo Lensmasters are encouraged to make new lenses or modify existing lenses and choose the royalty option as the Squidoo Charity fund.

Other Ways of Helping California Fire Survivors
In addition to making lenses that benefit the Squidoo Charity Fund, lensmasters can make lenses that benefit Save the Children and the Human Society.

Both of these organizations are providing aid and resources to survivors of the California Fires.

Squidoo Fire Aid Lens

The First Recipient of SquidAid - the Squidoo Fire Aid Challenge.

For the Squidoo Fire Aid Challenge, lensmasters can choose to designate the Squidoo Charity Fund, or Save the Children or the Humane Society, both charities directly supporting the Survivors of the California Fires as recipients of the SquidAid.

Why Should I Participate on SquidAid?

Because Giving Back is Good for Your Health

Giving back to others, being altruistic, or reaching out to help others, not only benefits the person being helped, but practicing altruism also has many benefits for the person doing the helping.

Bernard Meltzer says that:
There is no better exercise for your heart
Than reaching down and helping to lift someone up.
So remember that giving back is good for your heart.

SquidAid Results - So Far

The response for SquidAid from Headquarters and the Powers that be has already been very remarkable and generous.

Megan has committed the following resources to SquidAid from the Squidoo Charity Fund:
    1. A donation of $1,000 from the Charity Fund from previous months directly to the Relief Efforts for the fire victims.

    2. An additional commitment to donate half of the Squidoo Charity Fund's earnings during the months of October and November to Relief Efforts for the fire victims.
The California Community Foundation and/or the San Diego Foundation's After-the-Fires Fund 2007 are the suggested recipients, since the Red Cross has already met their costs for the California Fires.

Doubling our Contribution
The California Community Foundation is a leading contender since they will match the first $250,000 in contributions to the Southern California Wildfire Relief Fund and waive administrative fees to ensure all donations will be used for relief activities. Donating to Cal Fund is an easy way to double the strength of the SquidAid donations.

Future Efforts of SquidAid

Going forward, we will be working with Squidoo Headquarters to monitor situations as they arise and determine which future disaster may be the beneficiaries of SquidAid.

With funds available from lenses that benefit the Squidoo Charity Fund we will have more resources at the ready to lend aid to survivors of future major disasters, much like the Red Cross.

In addition, now with the SquidAid concept, we will be able to quickly mobilize the virtual Squidoo Community to aid survivors of current and future disasters.

About the Squidoo Charity Fund

The Squidoo Charity Fund was created for lensmasters who want to donate their royalties to charity, but can't decide where to send them.

Each month, a different charity (or charities) is chosen to receive these funds and announce where the money goes on the SquidU forum.

Past Squidoo Charity Fund recipients have included the Acumen Fund, JDRF, Room to Read, Tides Foundation, Veterans for America, Modest Needs, and DonorsChoose.

Funds generated from lensmasters participating in SquidAid by donating their royalties to the Squidoo Charity Fund can by used, when needed as SquidAid to benefit survivors of disaster.

Farm Aid from Wikipedia

Farm Aid started as a benefit concert on September 22, 1985, in Champaign, Illinois, held to raise money for family farmers in the United States. The concert was organized by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, spurred on by Bob Dylan's comments at Live Aid earlier in that year. (Dylan said, "I hope that some of the money...maybe they can just take a little bit of it, maybe...one or two million, maybe...and use it, say, to pay the mortgages on some of the farms and, the farmers here, owe to the banks....") Nelson and Mellencamp then brought family farmers before Congress to testify about the state of family farming in America. Congress subsequently passed the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987 to help save family farms from foreclosure....

America: A Tribute to Heroes from Wikipedia

America: A Tribute to Heroes was a benefit concert organized by actor George Clooney and broadcast by the four major United States television networks in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. Done in the style of a telethon, it featured a number of national and international entertainers performing to raise money for the victims and their families, particularly but not limited to the New York City firefighters and New York City police officers. It aired September 21, 2001, uninterrupted and commercial-free. It was released on December 4, 2001 on compact disc and DVD.

On a dark stage illuminated by hundreds of candles, twenty-one artists performed songs of mourning and hope, while various actors and other celebrities delivered short spoken messages. The musical performances took place at three studios in Los Angeles (CBS Television City), New York, and London, while the celebrity messages took place at Los Angeles. Some of the musicians including Neil Young and Eddie Vedder were heard working the phone banks taking pledges. The money raised amounted to about $30 million, and was given to...
