What are Squid Book Picks?
But first, 6 things you should know about books:
1. Books are the single most sold product type on Squidoo. Across the whole site. Books.
2. People like to buy books. People like to recommend books. Books make us feel smart.
3. Books come at good price points. Anywhere from $10 to $15 for a paperback, $17-$25 for a hardcover. Generally.
4. The Amazon affiliate program rocks. Really. It's straightforward and fair and Amazon as a site is awesome and trustworthy and has changed the world. (Really). So we like doing business with them.
5. There's a lot of potential in creating a book recommendation sales platform on Squidoo. This is just a tiny pilot test in what could be something much bigger and more interesting.
6. What if Squidoo as a site sold 1,000 books a day, every day? What if it was 1,000 of the SAME book in one day. Bet you that book would hit tons of bestseller lists. Bet it wouldn't take long for publishers to come asking to buy sponsorships for great new books. Bet it would be fun for the Squidoo community to sit on a board, deciding which books get featured. Bet we could create Squidoo-run reading groups, led by you, to help people discover and talk about their favorites. Lots of things worth betting on. But before we gamble it all away, we're starting small, really, small, and trying one or two things.

Now, more about the Squidoo Book Picks pilot test
A book a day for 9 days
Most big web companies like Squidoo support themselves with ads. Google ads. Display ads. Google has taught the world that relevance is king: If you can algorithmically show a surfer a result or an ad that matches what he was looking for, bingo. It works. Likewise, selling big sponsorships works, when you have lots of pages (which we do) and a big sales team to go out and sell it (which we don't).On the other hand, when a blog or a site or Fresh Air or The Daily Show or Woot.com picks just one product at a time and features it in a big way, sales skyrocket. Our entire site, as you know, is built around the idea of recommendation, though in practice it's the long tail of recommendation, or lots and lots of little recommendations. Empowering individuals to create dozens of recommendation pages and reach their specific, relevant groups of interested people. You, every individual lensmaster, should keep doing that as well as you have been.
This Book Picks experiment is our attempt at doing the same; it's taking that principle and trying it on a bigger scale.
So the Squidoo Book Picks pilot program is a test at running editorially selected Amazon book picks, featuring 1 book a day across the whole site. We'll be doing it for 9 days, 1 book each day, and generating a spotlight book box in the right hand "advertising / stats" sidebar of lenses. We're picking a range of books to test interest from surfers as well as the clickthrough rates and purchases on Amazon.
With nearly 23,000,000 page views a month across the site, this is the kind of sponsorship space advertisers would pay $50,000 or more for, hands down. But we want to try using it to promote some smart authors and fun books, first, and give the Squidoo community a shot at running some stuff here.
In other words: We're always looking for new ways to test revenue models and make the site self-sufficiently profitable for us and for you. This is just one of them. (And yes, just as with ads, 50% of the book revenue will go straight to the community's ad pool). And in 9 days we'll be a little smarter about how it worked.
Your turn to pick
Nominate your favorite. (Fresh new stuff is best. We especially love first time authors). The book with the most votes on the list below will be featured across the whole site on the final day of this Book Picks pilot test. *Disclaimers below. Mileage may vary. Cracker jacks sold separately.
You decide which book is featured as the Grand Finale
Rules:
-- Submit it here. Yes, it has to be for sale on Amazon.
-- The book with the most votes will be featured across the entire site on the grand finale day of the Squid Book Picks experiment.
-- Squidoo reserves the right to dismiss the book with the most votes for any reason.
-- Nope, it can't be a Seth Godin book, no matter how much we love him. Yes, it can be a book by a lensmaster, for all you lensmaster-authors in the house.
--Try to make it a new, fresh book! Or a hidden gem of a book. It's more fun to be a tastemaker than a follower.

- I saw a book featured on my add space and thought: "How'd that get there?" so I clicked to find out more info, and a couple of more clicks later ended up here. OMG! What a great idea! I love this whole Squid Book Club thing. I'm a major book addict, (I own more than 10,000 books, I've got no space to move around, but I've got plenty to read!) so I'll very likely being one of the people doing the book buying as a result of this. OMG! A new way to find new books! I love it!

- I like the sound of this and I added a book which is worth looking into not only because I personally knew a lot of people mentioned in this book, but because it's such a beautiful read and without a trace of bitterness shows one family's history in this tragic country.

- eat, pray, love. Even though the book's been out three years, it's still resonating with women. Author Elizabeth Gilbert recently packed in an audience for an autograph signing at The Washington National Cathedral.

- Lovely Bones is a book that came out in 2002, it will be released in December 2009. It's a mesmerizing read that grabs you from the start. It will have the same buzz as The Reader.
