The Squidoo homebase for SquidEtsians

SquidEtsians are members of the etsy community who have joined together to promote each other through squidoo. This page is intended to be the homebase for SquidEtsians or those looking to become one.

To ask questions or participate in ongoing team conversation, visit our "official" team thread. We also have a team blog--for more details on that, see the "team projects" section below.

Announcement: Looking for a new (co) team leader

I'm currently too overwhelmed to give the running of this team the attention it deserves, and it's causing the team participation to decline. I will gladly give team leadership to someone else, or accept offers of help co-leading the team. Please contact me a.s.a.p. if you're interested (via my etsy site, purrprints.etsy.com); if I don't hear from people soon the team may have to be closed down.

For Etsians New to Squidoo

Getting Started

First, if you haven't signed up and don't have someone you're already planning to sign up through, you're welcome to use my referral so that you can get an extra 5 bucks once you reach your first 15 (in full disclosure I get 5 bucks once you reach 15 too, so if you have another friend you want to sign up under feel free to use them--I'm not trying to snag everyone's referrals ).

Once you've joined, the obvious next question is "ack--what do I do now?" Fortunately some SquidEtsians, like The-Homeopath (cchiovitti on etsy), really know their stuff. She's created a kind of mini-tutorial on how to use the etsy "module" on your squidoo lens that I've copied into the section "How to Use the Etsy Module on Your Lenses" below. Additionally, she's created a bunch of other useful lenses for the team that you can find in the "other useful links" section on this page, plus a group on Squidoo, with lots of tips and tricks, just for us--and there, unlike this page, you can add ANY of your lenses, whether or not they are about other SquidEtsians. So check it out.

What are "SquidEtsians" Anyway?

Evolving Guidelines

I'm all for democracy, so if you have an idea of something that isn't here but you think should be, or is here that you think shouldn't be, by all means let me know.

Purposes of the SquidEtsians team:

1) To help our etsy shops get more visits/sales
2) To help us develop high-quality "lenses" on squidoo (thus helping with goal 1 and maybe making some money off our lenses too)
3) To help each other achieve 1 and 2 by visiting each other's lenses, writing about each other's etsy shops in lenses of our own, and generally creating a supportive and fun community of people.

Requirements to be a member of the SquidEtsians:

1) Niceness. If you aren't interested in being part of a friendly helpful group then this isn't the team for you.
2) Accounts on both squidoo and etsy.
3) A squidoo lens that features your etsy shop (be sure to let us know about it by adding it to the proper links list below and mentioning it on the team thread).

Highly recommended, but not required, activities:

1) Writing lenses that feature other SquidEtsians.
2) Visiting, rating, and commenting upon other SquidEtsians' lenses periodically.
3) Participating in, or at least regularly checking on, the SquidEtsian team thread on etsy.
4) Being supportive in other ways (like making treasuries that include SquidEtsians, helping other SquidEtsians with questions about etsy or squidoo, etc.).
5) Participate in some (or all!) of the other team projects described below.

Have thoughts or questions about any of these? Don't hesitate to leave them on the guestbook or send me a message through etsy.

We're now doing monthly lens challenges--each month you'll have a choice of two topics to create a lens around. It's a fun way to challenge yourself to create new lenses--keep an eye on the team blog each month for details on that month's challenge.

EntreCard is a free social network for bloggers. Many bloggers are using it to get more traffic to their blog and ETSY store.

So what do you need to make EC work for you?
    * A blog - Sorry, you can't put EntreCard on your Squidoo lens.
    * An EntreCard account - sign up here Entrecard
    * The EntreCard widget on your blog page
    * A list of EC blogs to add to your EC favorites and drop on regularly:
    Team SquidEtsy
    artforhair
    purrprints
    pinkcrabcreations
    nothinglikeit

Where to find other EC blogs
    This Squidoo Lens
    Search the Forums for EntreCard

If you already have a blog with EC or have just set one up, make sure you post it in the SquidEtsian thread.

If you would like to help with passing out other SquidEstians business cards, send an email or conversation to group members mentioning this. A postal address would be good too :)
Spread them around your hometown or put them in with orders of yours.

How to Use the Etsy Module on Your Lenses

by The Homeopath

The Etsy module here on Squidoo is still in the Beta phase, so it does have a few limitations. I've found a few ways around this:

The module will NOT allow you to add a description! The best thing to do is to add a text module to place right above the Etsy module. In the text module you can add your Etsy shop banner and a description. I just leave the title blank.

Here's an example to show you how I've done it -

Scroll down on this lens I've made to see how I've featured Karina's shop

The area with her banner and shop description is a single text module. The items linked to her storefront are in the Etsy module. The blue text that says "Hand Made Lip Balms" is the Etsy Module title and the "Cocoa Butter Free Lip Balms by Karina" below that is the sub-title.

Adding items from your store:
The upload will ask for your shop ID number. If you go to your store front on Etsy, look up at your browser address, the numbers at the end are your shop ID.

Example: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=79515 <-----just type these numbers in for the module to link to your store front.

Sections - You can pull items out of a specific section of your store. For my lip scrub lens, I only wanted to feature her lip balms, I didn't want the module to pull up soaps or other items in her store. So, you can specify which section of your store you want items pulled from.

Example: From Karina's store front, I clicked on her section on the right that says "Pucker Up Lip Balms". When that main section is on the screeen, I copied the section numbers off of my browser address bar and inserted them:

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=79515&section_id=5150270 <-----The Section I.D. Numbers

Now, once you have the numbers added, hit the "go" button. It will "pull" 5 items up. You won't be able to choose exactly which ones you want, BUT, you can delete ones that you don't. It's hard to explain, so bear with me. The module will pull 5 items up. If you don't want one of them included, you can delete it. You will only have 4 items in the module, though, because if you try to pull another one up, it will be the same one you just deleted. Kind of a pain, I know.

Remember - you can add multiple modules, though. You can add one just for widgets in your store, another for doodads, and a third for whatchamacallits if you want to, or just have one item in each if you really want to spotlight it.

For art pieces where you really want to show off details, I think maybe the best way is to do this:

Add a plain text box and write a super-dooper decription of it. Then, using html code, insert a good, nice sized picture of the item. Under the picture, add a link to that item in your store. This method works really well for items like paintings, ACEOs, prints, sculpture, fabric items, and more.

Don't forget to update/change the items in the module whenever you sell something or add new items!!! Sales won't automatically be removed from the module.
