The Assorted Achievements, Adventures & Ambitions Of A Squidoo Lensmistress!

Hi, I'm CDT! I've been a Squidoo lensmaster since May 2007 and a Giant Squid since January 2009. In June 2010 I made my 100th Squidoo lens and on 9th July 2010 I was accepted into the Giant Squid 100 Club!

On 1st September 2010, I became a Squid Angel!

This lens is a personal record and timeline of my "best bits" on Squidoo - all the things I've done here that I'm especialy proud of and that are really special to me (and sometimes to others!).

How I Fell In Love With Squidoo

Squidoo and CDT sitting in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G....!

CDT - Squidoo lensmaster & Giant Squid!

My original avatar!

I joined Squidoo in May 2007. To be precise, I stumbled into Squidoo quite by chance!

I run my own business and I was looking for places on the internet where I could publicise it and gain backlinks to help my business website rank well in search engine results and I came across a Squidoo page that one of my local competitors had written. Impressed by the amount this person had been able to write about his business, I joined Squidoo and wrote a page of my own.

I was immensely proud of it...at the time!

I thought that was that as far as Squidoo and me were concerned - but then I found myself thinking of things I could add to my page - then I thought "why not write about something else?"...and so I did - and I kept on doing it - and I'm still doing it well over three years later!

I love Squidoo - it's a fabulous platform for self-expression and the tools supplied are nothing short of amazing!

Over time, I've learnt how to make a good Squidoo lens. I was immensely proud of my first few efforts, but in retrospect, they were, in a word, AWFUL! You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs though and I learnt by my mistakes :)

I now have over one hundred Squidoo lenses to my name and between them they receive several thousand visitors every week - a fact that never ceases to amaze and humble me :)

This lens is intended as a snapshot of my really special Squidoo achievements! I'm proud of them and being of an orderly persuasion, it's a way for me to keep chronological tabs on what happened and when!

How I Became A Giant Squid

I'm a Giant Squid...and you can become one too!

How CDT joined Squidoo and became a Giant Squid

Tentacles!: Tales of the Giant Squid available from Amazon.co.uk!

After eighteen months on Squidoo, I'd made over 50 lenses and finally thought that perhaps, at last, I was finally getting to grips with how to make a half-decent Squidoo lens!

I thought I'd see if those better qualified than me to judge what's considered a good lens thought so too and so in December 2008, I (somewhat nervously!) applied to become a Giant Squid!

Being accepted as a Giant Squid is an honour as only those lensmasters who can demonstrate a consistently high standard of lensmaking get accepted!

In January 2009, (and a lot of chewed fingernails later), I was delighted to learn I'd been accepted into the ranks of the Giant Squids!

To find out more about becoming a Giant Squid, here's a link to an excellent lens which will explain everything you could ever want to know on the subject of Giant Squids! - THE GIANT SQUIDS (and how you can become one)

How I Became A Squid Angel!

CDT had Angel wings in September 2010 & became the Squid Angel for "Cars: Driving & Safety" in February 2011!

CDT - SquidAngel

My SquidAngel avatar!

I applied to an open advert on the SquidU forum in August 2010 and on 1st September 2010, I was lucky enough to be chosen as part of the first of a new group of 50 volunteer Squid Angels to serve a term of roughly 30 days on a rota basis!

This is a wonderful honour as it gives me a chance to help and encourage other lensmasters and the Squidoo community as a whole :)

If you don't know what a Squid Angel is, this is how Kimberly, the Community & Charity Organizer on Squidoo describes the role:

"SquidAngels get a cool administrative feature that allows them to bless (thumbs up) or ding (thumbs down) a lens based on how awesome it is. Really great lenses are blessed, junky, spammy, awful lenses get a ding, and all other lenses stay the same. All at the individual Angels' discretion."

In February 2011, I started my second term as a Squid Angel when I became the Angel for the category Cars: Driving & Safety".

A TV Company Got In Touch With Me Because Of One Of My Squidoo Lenses!

Researchers from ITV contacted me because they'd read one of my lenses!

My very first ever Squidoo lens started life as a (very) amateur attempt at promoting my business (I own a driving school!). When I eventually found my feet at Squidoo, I wrote some considerably better and more specific promotional lenses for my business - which left me with my original lens devoid of content and cooling it's heels doing nothing!

I thought the URL was usuable, so I totally re-wrote the lens - I did all the things you're not supposed to do from an SEO viewpoint - I changed the title, the content - the whole lot...I choose a subject very dear to my heart - Driving Instructor Training!

In the UK, on certain TV channels, never an advert break goes by without adverts from a large national driving instructor training company. These adverts paint an exceptionally simplistic picture of how easy it is to become a driving instructor and what it's like to work in the driver training industry. These adverts are so wide of the mark as to be laughable to those who know better - and, more worryingly, as a member of several industry forums, I'd come across an increasingly worrying number of disillusioned trainee driving instructors who kept saying the same thing:

"I wish I'd known what was really involved..."

So I wrote this lens to explain in some detail, everything that the TV adverts don't mention...such as the cost, the low pass rates and how to prepare for self-employment in a highly competitive industry with a surplus of supply over demand.

The complaints from disillusioned trainees continued and eventually a TV company decided to do an investigative programme about people facing redundancy in the current economic downturn and how many were finding that adverts for so called "easy and lucrative" careers turned out to be markedly different from the impression given by adverts - they chose driving instructor training as one of the areas they would investigate.

I was contacted by researchers from ITV (the largest national terrestrial commercial TV network in the UK) who had come across my lens during their research read it and wanted my input to the programme!

I think this demonstrates the power of a Squidoo lens - to inform and educate and to reach it's intended audience and do some good!

My Purple Star Lenses

My Purple Stars - I'm very proud of these!

Here's all my purple star lenses in the order in which the stars were awarded!

(Right click on the lens title to open in a new window or tab)

My First Purple Star Lens

This Purple Star was awarded on June 5 2009

My first purple star was awarded for my lens about rescue dogs. My own three dogs were all strays which I adopted via a rescue centre. I adore dogs and the thought of unwanted dogs being euthanised makes me want to cry :(

Here's my effort at publicising the plight of unwanted Lurchers in the UK and educating would be owners about these wonderful dogs...

My Second Purple Star Lens

This Purple Star was awarded on June 25 2009

I took part in the Giant Squid Summer School 2009 and this lens was an assignment I did for Summer School.

It is, by far, the most personal and emotional Squidoo lens I've ever produced. I'm a pretty private and rather shy person, so this is the closest anyone in cyberspace is likely to come to seeing me share something intensely personal...

Making this lens was quite a cathartic experience - it cleaned out a lot of cobwebs in the dusty attic of my mind!

Loading

My Third Purple Star Lens

This Purple Star was awarded on 3 August 2009

This lens was another Summer School assignment.

I really enjoyed writing this lens as it brought back happy memories of fun days out when my sons were younger, the sun shone brighter and life was a lot less complcated!

Loading

My Fourth Purple Star

This Purple Star was awarded on 9 September 2009

This lens is currently my top ranking lens and is my most popular lens overall in terms of visitors.

I've always been a person who celebrates individualism and I think the whole Goth "thing" is diverse, beautiful and all round fab!

...and I've never met a Goth who wasn't nice!

My Fifth Purple Star

This Purple Star was awarded on 20 October 2009

I have to admit I was surprised when I got the Purple Star notification for this one...it was certainly unexpected!

I own a driving school and I have written lots of lenses on the subject of learning to drive and passing the UK driving test.

This lens is part of a series of 5 lenses specifically about the manoeuvres required for the driving test. I don't know why this one was singled out, but I'm not complaining and am very honoured that it was considered worthy of a Purple Star :)

My Sixth Purple Star

This Purple Star was awarded on 10th November 2009

If I was surprised to get Purple Star number 5, you could have knocked me down with a feather when I got number 6!

This one was for a lens I'd made in one of my more "frivolous" moments...my homage to Fuzzy Dice :)

The Purple Star came out of the blue as this is a lens I made quite a while ago and doesn't get much traffic...it's one of my favourites though and I'm really pleased that the Purple Star Gods & Goddesses liked it and I'd like to thank whoever nominated it :)

My Seventh Purple Star

My first Purple Star in over a year ...funnily enough for yet another of the lenses I created for the Giant Squid Summer School 2009!

Big thanks to whoever nominated this lens!

What Next?

What will I do next? Your guess is as good as mine!

What have I got planned next?

At the time of writing, I'm nearly flat out on other "projects" and don't have anywhere near enough time to "relax" on Squidoo :(

However, in the medium to long term, I've got lots more learning to drive lenses to write...and lots more heavy metal bands I love...and lots more books to write about...

Watch this space :D

Awesome lens! Truly inspiring! I didn't even know there was a Squid Calendar! I got started by simply coming across Squidoo one day while surfing the web. I figured I didn't know enough to make my own lens so I paid someone to create one for me in order to get traffic for my artwork. The lens they created was very mediocre and I started tweaking it and rewriting it. Suddenly I was building lenses for myself. (Still don't know how to get traffic though).
