✎ Learning the Best Practices with Squidoo

Ranked #2,359 in Squidoo Community, #194,601 overall

Welcome to my Squidoo playground!

I am trying out modules as well as html, css, and overall presentation. I also need a place to keep the lenses that have been so helpful to me. Some of them I have already learned from, others are on my to-do list. And of course, I needed a checklist for creating and promoting a lens.

I learned how to put this box on the right (in the Intro module) from this lens: My Favorite Tricks on Squidoo with CSS by thefluffanutta. The trick was to to put this code in the p tag <p style="margin-left:262px;">

Newest thing I learned:

Using dividers and separators

I've seen lenses with pretty divider images and wondered how they did it. The lens I finally learned it from was by Lensmaster stargazer00 on this lens: Borders Dividers and Separators.

Squid Points, Levels, Trophies, and Monsters

I'm moving up in levels though I'm not really sure how that affects my lensrank and earnings potential. Apparently they don't, according to this from Megan Casey at Squidoo: MONEY: Do my SquidPoints or Levels affect my royalties?

Top 40 List
I've earned points for making it to the Top 40 List though I have yet to see my name on the list since it updates hourly. If I ever see it there, I'll make a screen shot.

TIME OUT! I just saw my name on the list at number 20! I'm so excited!! Now my dilemma is: do I stay on Squidoo for a few more hours trying to get higher on the list, or do I find contentment in being number 20???

I had just decided to be content with #20, being happy about being more active than 20 other Lensmasters (including many of my Heroes) when I made it up to #15 !!! OMG: I'm ahead of GreekGeek, dagsmith, Spook, WeddingZazzle, boutiqueshops, pastiche, Evelyn_Saenz, hlkljgk, and SylvestorMouse.

This explains why I'm not making progress on my room which I'm supposed to be organizing

UPDATE: 10/2/10: I've made it to the Top 40 list several times now. Earlier today I was at number 9..then 6...and now...4. I'm at number 4! I'm taking screenshots like crazy. I just made my husband come look at my computer screen I was so excited! Of course, I had to explain it all to him but once he saw my picture up there, even he got excited. And so with every good fortune comes a dilmma: keep Squidooing, or complete my school assignment? What's a lensmaster to do?

Trophies
Here's a Trophy Hunter Page put together by another Lensmaster. There are apparently so many trophies that he had to make multiple pages. The secret to finding his "multiple pages" is knowing that he is able to add tabs to his lenses.

Trophies are awarded for: number of lenses, activity (example: liking other lenses), and how long you've been with Squidoo. In the last few days, I "liked" a whole bunch of lenses, trying to Level up and get the Squidliking Trophy. I did level up, but I don't know how many lenses I "liked" so I don't know how close I am to getting that Trophy.

Here's two Trophies I'm after: Squidliking Suits You for Liking 50 lenses and Chatterbox for leaving 20 comments. I just counted how many comments I left since the points thing started, and I counted 36...yet I don't have a Chatterbox trophy. I wonder if the comments have to be accepted by the lensmaster before they count towards the trophy?

Update on Posting Comments: I just checked to see if the comments I posted were accepted by the Lensmasters, and they were. I just verified 23 of my posting have in fact appeared on a lens. So...do I continue leaving comments...I know it's good to leave comments....but I really want that Trophy...but I should be thinking about how nice it is when I receive comments on my lens...but what about that Trophy???

Update on Trophies: I spent a bunch of time today looking at my points to see how/where I've accumulated the most points to find the pattern. There isn't one that I can detect yet. So far, though, the most points for me come from making a new lens. I'd been thinking about making a lens about the Squidoo Modules because I tend to use the same ones over and over. So I went ahead and made it Squidoo Modules Sampler and guess what??? I got 10 points for starting the lens, 100 points for publishing the lens, and get this: a Trophy for my "First Lens!" What??? Huh??? It's not my first lens, it's my 43rd lens. I'm inching closer to level 21 (only 99 points to go) but apparently not going to see Chatterbox anytime soon. And no points for getting a Trophy? What's up with that? Oh well. I've spent enough time today on Squidoo. Time to get some other work done.

Symbols I use as a prefix to my Lens title

I use them to sort my lenses by groups

Note: If you use the code, remember to place a semi-colon ; after the last digit.

This first set is easily identifiable symbols:
  &#9998     For lenses about Learning.

  &#10084     Lens about love

&#9730     Lenses which are weather related

  &#9832     Lens about fire

  &#9836     Lenses about music

This group of symbols doesn't completely relate to the lens intent, but in my mind they do.

&#10004     Lenses in the "Let's Go..." series

&#9739     Lens about my happy dog

  &#9758     Lenses about Squidoo tips

  &#10152     Lenses featuring web cams

&#8765     Lenses which are business related

This set of symbols are more abstract, since I couldn't find a symbol that represented the intent of the lenses, I just used these.
&#10046     Confession of a Pack Rat

  &#10047     Project Runway

  &#10049     Salmonella

&#10050     What are you looking at?

&#10070     Lenses in the "How to" category

Before I forget

I've used this section to jot down things I wanted to try. I delete them afterwards.

Maintain my own set of standards

Consistency is important

  • Intro module - turn on Contents. I checked them all on 1/8/10 and they each have them turned on.
  • A TOC somewhere on the lens. Could be at the end as a "Go back to:". Could use several customized ones especially if the lens is really long
  • Use a Poll module to get people interested in my topic
  • Clean HTML tags. Links should have the "title" tag. Images should have "alt" tag. Clickable images should have both the "title" tag and the "alt" tag.
  • Each lens to have at least one sales module.

Upgrades to Existing Lens
  • Remove the old "Lens rank..." tracking thing I used to do. DONE 1-14-10.
  • Web cams lens could use some maps to let people know where the web cam is located.
  • Improve navigation. Include TOCs at various sections.
  • Add sales modules.
  • Add poll modules.
  • Reduce the number of lenses I put in the Lensroll section. [Note: this was an old feature that has been phased out. I do recommend submitting every lens to Lensroll.]

Squidoo Strategy

My Squidoo Strategy

  • Go back to some of my existing lens and add some Amazon modules. I was surprised to see that my main lens about Port Aransas didn't have even one sales module. Yet, it is consistently doing well in its rank. But it doesn't make much money because nobody is buying anything.
  • It's recommended that I have a niche market for my lens. I have a feeling that will be the beach and web cams. But, although those interest me, what I really want is traffic. So, I think I might make several lenses, see how they do traffic wise, and adjust accordingly.
  • I need to make a time schedule for myself: creating a new lens from scratch, updating lenses, checking for broken links, rating, favoriting, and leaving comments on other people's lenses.
  • Find out who the Squidoo Angels are and become one of their fans. When they are looking for a lens to bless, maybe they'll look at one of their fans!   arncyn says that's one of the ways she finds lenses to bless. Spent most of Jan. 11 and 12, 2010 on finding fan clubs to join. Started the Excel database to see which fan clubs I have joined. My sources are:
  • Join some groups.
  • Learn more about the Squid Log
  • Keep up with who is receiving Lens of the Day

teatree said "So in conclusion, I would ignore Rocket Moms or any other group and just get on with doing your own thing. You'll be better off for it. Instead of aiming to be part of this or that group, aim to get 150 search visitors to each lens a day. It will be worth it as search visitors actually buy things, so you make money from afiliate sales too (a lot more money than the revenue share even if you are Tier1)."

Squidoo Encouragement

Reading these two lens in December 2009 are what gave me the encouragement I needed.
Loading

Journal of the first major revised lens: Port Aransas Web Cams

Created a spin-off site on December 30, 2009 called Port Aransas Web Cams. My "Let's Go to Port Aransas" site is my highest ranked, so I thought it would be fairly simple to make a site with just Port Aransas web cams. I also realized that the main site had zero affiliate (Amazon) modules for making money, so I decided to put alot in the Port Aransas Web Cams page.

I looked at search terms used to find Let's Go to Port Aransas and used them alot in the spinoff

I tried different themes and chose the one called "Paintball" mainly for its blue background

I took screen shots of each camera image today (12-30-09), modified them in Photoshop: changed Image Size to resolution 300px, cropped the image into a square shape, saved for web and devices as a 300px X 300px gif. Then, I uploaded the images to Photobucket and tagged them. It's possible that some people might find the image on Photobucket first then go to my website. I used the Polaroid module (for the first time) to frame the pictures of the web cam. It took some trial and error to understand the most effective place for text.

I worked on it from about 9am until 8pm. About 1 hour for lunch, 1 hour break with dog. Made my lensography intermintently. Published it with initial rankings of 4,771 in Travel and 152,509 overall. On the following afternoon, the rankings were 3,696 in Travel and 121,709 overall. Next day: 1,316 in Travel and 52,283 overall. Although I know I added backlinks, the "Health" stats say there are none. Third day: 1,184 and 47,537.

Journal of my Lensography

A lensography was also recommended by Squidoo Giants. It's a way of listing my lenses and grouping them by category. I included links to my Resources such as Squidoo sites I like, Squidoo Tips, and outsiders (Photobucket, Flickr).

Although I published it, its ranking is 0. On the following afternoon, it had a ranking of 1,345 in "About Me" and 153,873 overall. The next day's rankings are 1,172 and 135,914 respectively. I have not tried to promote this lens like I have with the Port Aransas Beach Cams. Third day: 1,019 and 121,757. Spent some time in the Forum so I got some backlinks and feedback there. Also added two Poll modules to help keep readers interested and engaged. Plus it helps me measure their interests. Fourth day: 254 and 13,446. Researched key words and tag names. Discovered that Let's Go to Port Aransas! gets ranked high on most of its tags. I think this could be due in part to the fact that it has alot of content that I wrote. I incorporated alot of those tag keywords in the content. Consider this: develop a list of ten tags that I will use in all my niche lens. The remaining ten tags can be more specific to that lens. Also, make a lens for each of my niches. Link to my niche lenses there. I got these ideas after reading Optimizing Tags for Squidoo. Fifth day: 173 and 9,276. Made it to Tier 2.

How to make a backup of a lens

Create multiple backups:
  • Two will have code: html and xml. The guts of these are very complicated because it contains all the code on that lens's page.
  • Two are pdfs: "Edit Lens" and "View Lens." Neither pdf looks like the final product but for my purposes, it's okay.
Before you begin, make folders for each lens where the backups will go.

Export XML file
  1. Open the lens in "Edit" mode.
  2. In the Workshop tools on the right, select "Export" then click the Export button.
  3. Save the file to the correct folder. My default settings send it to My Documents\Downloads so I have to move it there via Explorer.

Create an HTML backup
  1. Open the lens in "Edit" mode.
  2. On the menu bar, click File and select "Save Page As." Choose the option to save Web Page Complete.
  3. Name the file and save it to the correct folder.
You've now saved an HTML file of your lens. You've also made a sub-folder with all the objects on your lens. This is a full backup of your lens.

Save it as a PDF
  1. Open the lens in "Edit" mode.
  2. On the menu bar, click File and select Print. Set the printer to "Adobe PDF" and click OK.
  3. Wait. It will probably be about 30 pages long.
  4. Go back to the lens and click "View lens" and make another pdf.

What's this all about?

This is a continuation of my lens, Learning the Best Practices with Squidoo. In this section, I'm playing with borders, links, table of contents, and anything else I need to test out before putting it on one of my "real" lens.

  16. Household Stuff

  17. Kills bugs I find in my bathtub (or anywhere else I find them).

  18. Takes out the trash.

  19. Brings the trash and recycling bins to the curb every week.

  20. Gets us some firewood and stacks it on the wood pile outside.

  21. Goes out into the cold and carries the firewood from the wood pile to the house.

  29. Calls the cable company when the TV and/or internet goes out.

  31. Called roofing contractors when we needed an estimate to repair the roof. Talked to the roofer and negotiated the contract.

  32. Called a fence company and got bids to have a wood fence built around our backyard. Negotiated the contract.

  33. Remembers Stuff

  34. Remembers my birthday by giving me a card and taking me out to dinner.

  35. Remembers our anniversary with a card, flowers, and dinner.

  36. Remembers valentines day with a card, flowers, candy, and dinner.

in text advertising

I suppose you have to write some text before you can assume there will be some in text advertising to your niche topic.
Since I would like to earn some online income, or is it income online? I don't know, but I know that to make in text advertising work, you have to have good content. It needs to relate to the rest of your site. You can't just write a list of keywords and expect them all to become infolinks.

Called roofing contractors when we needed an estimate to repair the roof. Talked to the roofer and negotiated the contract. Paid the bill.
