Squidoo for Kids!

Ranked #24,806 in Education, #452,967 overall | Donates to ASPCA

Squidoo is not only one of the easiest ways to build great sites online....it's also THE perfect learning center for kids to discover how to make pages, build a community, learn CSS and HTML, and even make money to boot! (I'm already running a summer camp for that over at Kids Make Money 2009, but I figured sharing a good part about what I know here on Squidoo is a Very Good Thing Indeed! You can learn more about that at the end of this lens.)

Ready to learn? Alrighty then, let's drive straight into:

BEFORE YOUR KID BEGINS ON SQUIDOO!

Write a note to Squidoo stating you are proxying for him or her

Squidoo's HALT!Terms of Service include:

You agree that you are at least 18 years of age on the date that you registered with Squidoo, or that you have a parent who has written a note to us here to proxy for your participation in the site.

Make certain to write that note to Squidoo at their feedback form.

Got that down? Alrighty now, let's dive into:

Step 1 - Who Uses Squidoo The Most?

The first thing to realize is just WHO in general will look at Squidoo pages (from Squidoo, that is). I think it's mainly adults! ('course, it can be kids if the Squidoo page shows up in Google search engines as well).

Realizing this (and please do push back if you think I'm completely boffo), it's key for children to understand the following killer point:

Think About The Targeted Audience

If your kids want to make money with Squidoo from WITHIN Squidoo, focus their pages on topics adults would appreciate as well!

Step 2 - What enthralls your kids that would interest others?

Happy Kids! Now, keep in mind...when I'm talking about kids, I'm talking about those critters who range in ages of 6 on up. As they get into the late teenage years, I'm certain the topics about which they write will be applicable to all ages.

But for the moment, let's focus on youngsters. What do they love? What would make them jump and and down and go

"Jeepers Mom, this is sooo nifty cool!"

More importantly, what do they adore that would appeal to their grown-up audience who, after all, controls the disposable income of their family?

Believe it or not, there are tons of topics about which your kids can write! Think about:

  • Cartoons
  • Anime (yes, there is amazingly a difference)
  • Hobbies
  • Academics

Want more ideas? Kids have to deal with lots of stress that adults quite often...cannot appreciate nor understand. consider:

  • Dealing with siblings
  • Dealing with peer pressure
  • Dealing with annoying parents

Knock your socks off!Now it's time for you to sit down because I'm about to shock your socks off with the following observation.

Ready?

Are you REALLY sitting?

Have you prepared yourself for NOT falling out of your chair and exclaiming to yourself, "Jeepers self, she's right!"?

Okay then - consider this key critical fact:

Kids have DIFFERENT viewpoints than do adults and parents.

In other words:

Step 3 - The KID'S perception is DIFFERENT than the ADULT'S perception

Sure, there are a bazillion pages about the above topics online.

But I'll bet you earlobes to toenails that those pages are written from an ADULT perspective...and not the kids'.

Think about it. Let's say that your child is passionate about anti-bullying. As an adult, I can write reams about such things like:

NOTE!The Red Balloon - 27 Resources For Smashing Bullies and Giving the gift of self-confidence to your children

NOTE!Bullies should be drawn and quartered

NOTE!How To Be A Girl Bully

but think about it for a moment - a 9 year old going thru the same thing RIGHT NOW probably has insights that my 40-odd year old self has forgotten.

And these insights are something to which other kids can relate!

Stay with me here, the following is key!

Don't you think other parents would like to know, straight from the horse's mouth, so to say, what THEIR bullied kids are feeling?

Hmmmm?

I'm lucky and blessed beyond all - I myself have an excellent relationship with my kids, and they will proactively talk to me about anything and everything. But for those parents who lack that....getting the inside scoop from another child could be very valuable indeed.

And that brings me to:

Step 4 - Squidoo lets kids can write kid-oriented AND parent-oriented pages

So should your kids write to their peers or to their peer's parents?

Your children can have the best of both worlds with Squidoo!

Let's take a topic like, oh, gee, Club Penguin. And yes, there are already Squidoo pages on it like:

NOTE!Club Penguin Toys

NOTE!Club Penguin Secrets

NOTE!About Club Penguin

Notice though....there are NO pages for:

A Parent's Guide to Club Penguin
Playing Club Penguin With Your Brothers
Club Penguin Privacy Tips

See?

If parents saw the above pages in a Club Penguin search result, chances are...they'd think to themselves, hey! My kids love that site, let me learn more.

And if your kids built such lenses, they could add nifty goodies like the following as well!

Did you know you can get Club Penguin Codes?

You don't always have to pay retail!! If parents are reading your child's page about Club Penguin, chances are...they'll think about how much their kids would love to have something like the below as a birthday gift or other reward.

And you can get Club Penguin Plushies too!

Kids always love action figures or plushies too (my kids devoured Garfield figures, we ended up with approximately 78 plushies scattered about the house). And these, too, are often on eBay as well!

Again, think about it from the viewer's perspective - if that viewer is a parent, and that viewer's kids live for Club Penguin, they definitely would be in the market for the items.

Step 9 - Turn them loose!

Once your kids have internalized the above, turn 'em loose!

Have them sit down and map out just what kinds of modules they want to create. Then go it with them and help them fine-tune the ideas - perhaps you can break down a huge topic into 5-6 sub-lenses that will help drive traffic as a whole.

In any event, I promise you this - your children will learn web design and Internet skills that will help them in the future! And that, of course, can only be described as a Very Good Thing indeed. :)

Step 10 - For More Information To Help Your Kids Make Money with Squidoo

For more information on helping your kids make money online, I'd like to invite you to the premium Inner Circle:

Kids Make Money

I'm already teaching my kids scores of the above techniques at Camp Ling. Many karate parents asked me for share what I know as well, so I created this inner circle for parents who want to give their kids an added edge.

The cost is only $10 for 3 months; I'd like to invite you over to check it out here! Any questions you have, I'll be happy to answer. Enjoy!

Sincerely,
Barbara Ling
