    Very useful - thank you!
  • glutenallergy May 25, 2012 @ 11:50 am | delete
I'm still so new at this that I have no idea what makes a difference in my lenses. Some of the lenses I am most proud of are languishing in the middle or bottom of my list, so apparently it isn't just good content. This has been helpful.
  • MSchindel May 23, 2012 @ 11:19 am | delete
The mind boggles at the amount of analysis you have done on which factors do and don't affect lensrank and to what degree! This information will help many other lensmasters to improve their lensrank, and I personally will be re-reading it a few times to make sure I absorb it all. Enthusiastically blessed by a SquidAngel!
  • Prophetic_Blogger May 22, 2012 @ 1:16 am | delete
As always, I've found your lens to be incredibly well written and has influenced me into tracking my own lenses like you have in your spreadsheets. Thankyou for sharing your stats with us, it's been really helpful.
  • TLStahling May 20, 2012 @ 6:52 pm | delete
Thanks for the insight. It's appreciated.
  • tembrooke May 20, 2012 @ 5:24 pm | delete
Wow -- you've done a lot of analysis here! I haven't done that level of study, but I definitely note changes in lensrank when I do updates. Sales and clickouts also help.
  • salsym May 16, 2012 @ 11:41 pm | delete
The best lens so that I have gone through. Thanks for sharing.. May be I will now perfom better in my lens building endeavour.
  • igorvragovic May 7, 2012 @ 4:17 pm | delete
I have downloaded your data and now I am performing some quanitative calculations. It seems that there are correlations between lens ranks and many of the parameters that you took into account. Please, visit my new lens for more details. The lens title is " Analyzing Squidoo Lens Rank ", and the link is http://www.squidoo.com/analyzing-squidoo-lens-rank

Now that I read all this, it makes me think ... oh heck, I'll just write and be happy. It'll all work itself out in the end, so long as I continue to create well-rounded content. This was a terrific lens, as are many of your other ones. i find your content very easy to read and understand. Best of luck!

Thank you for being so generous - this gives some interesting pointers for newbies like me!

Very thorough analysis. I suspect that because several factors are involved in a complex, interconnected way, it is very difficult to reverse engineer the algorithm. It always made sense to me that traffic would be a major factor, it is after all how the site makes money (x amount of traffic=y amount of ad revenue), I am surprised that sales don't seem to count more because they also bring revenue to the site. Squidoo is a business, you would expect it to reward the lenses that help it earn money, although it might be felt that people who build sale lenses get most of the rewards from the sales. One thought that I had, does clicking on an ad count as a "clickout?", I would have thought so.
I am rather encouraged that comments and squid likes don't appear to mean that much, I think sometimes, people might do do that on other lenses, helping for reciprocal action, if I comment and squidlike 10 lenses, a couple of the lensmasters might feel they should return the favour. The fact that referral traffic appears to be important is interesting, I guess it can be interpreted as in, you are directly advertising your page, and therefore Squidoo, and getting people to come here from other places on the web, which has to be good. Of course referrals are frequently inbound links, which may help you rank with Google, it's all interconnected.

I find it pretty confusing, my lenses can jump up and down thousands within a few days. I don't know why, but am keeping an eye on it.
  • Petar Apr 27, 2012 @ 5:28 pm | delete
Thank you for sharing, this is really good information and a rare opportunity for those without a lot of tier 1 & 2 lenses to see such trending.

I'm still getting familiar with using squidoo, so this lens was very helpful in clearing up my questions about what exactly lensrank is and how it is calculated. Thanks for the detailed info!
  • MindPowerProofs Mar 26, 2012 @ 3:52 am | delete
Tags are the most important factor
  • Greekgeek Mar 29, 2012 @ 2:55 pm | delete
That is not true. Tags don't factor into LENSRANK at al. Squidoo lensrank measures performance: how many visitors, sales, clickouts, or visitor interaction a lens earns. Tags have nothing to do with performance; they just determine what lenses appear in the "Related" box in the sidebar.

lensranks and tiers have always confused me since I started here....You've done a lot of research and it does make a bit more sense to me. Basically I need to just get down to business here on squidoo.
  • MarcGuberti Mar 21, 2012 @ 9:24 pm | delete
Thanks for the help. I have my best lenses going up and down, but they are staying at Tier 2. Lol, their lens ranks have exactly a 1,000 difference.

I have been with Squidoo for less than a month and seen my lensranking go up and down quite a bit these last 2 weeks. Thanks for the information.

recently, I think that many factor show their effects after 1 or 2 days. But the problem is sometimes they dont. I just leave many of my assumpsitons. like updating or daily hit. The one thing I know which shows its impact immediately is CTR.
    About traffic
    Right now,
    lens1= weekly traffic 1577 rank 16163
lens2= weekly traffic 759 rank 6716 both of them updated at the same day
I am thinking about if page view/visit rate is a factor. It seems that it decreasing effect of traffic. What do you think about it ?
  • mauros34 Dec 1, 2011 @ 2:06 pm | delete
well it seems squidoo is a profitable organization and stops people from getting their full potential which in return might make squidoo a better site with alot more lenses.Give more to get more..........my opinion

    Dear Greekgeek,

I think I figured out the unethical way that lensrank is being manipulated on Squidoo. Sidther recommended I check out your findings though.

If you wish, have a peek at my findings: http://www.squidoo.com/does-lensrank-make-sense

(You can delete this post, just wanted to let another Squid know my study of lensrank).

    Sincerely,
    Rose

I took a look, but I'm disappointed you chose to delete my observations about lensrank... they are based on nearly 5 years of experience and study.

But what content you allow on your lens is of course your choice. I'll leave your link here in case anyone wants to check out your speculations.

I do find it all fairly confusing. But I love your spreadsheets. Very helpful. My goal is to do the best I can, be helpful, keep my lenses updated and hope for the best. Thank you so much. The work you put into this is remarkable. Blessed!

Wow, and I thought that I was anal...ytical when it came to Squidoo stats :p What a great, in-depth look at a variety of factors. With my recent experience, I've realized that CTR has a much higher effect than I was previously aware of, and adding some more click opportunities to a site that gets traffic is a pretty good way to increase rank.

Traffic is the number one factor for me, followed by recent Squidlikes, then maybe sales, then clickouts. Clickouts do seem to matter. I haven't studied it too intensely, but I have a feeling clickouts matter quite a bit.

Does the blessing stat show up somewhere and I just don't know about it? I need to really bare down and start paying more attention to these metrics. I've just been focusing on backlinking/pinging/forum posting and hoping to improve traffic generation. I feel like I'm a veteran after only 1 month, but I'm still just a newb. I have so much to learn. Thanks for sharing this sensitive info. I know it wasn't easy.

Thank you very much for this informative lens.
I think frequency of updates works but because you can get better rank after every update. So, your lens rank go up like a rocket.
I want to emphasize that the important thing is not to update your lens, but changing content. what I mean is that it is not work if you just click edit lens then click publish. Yes your lens looks like updated but it will not affect your lens rank.
I cant log my statistics so, I cant give you any proof of following claims right now.
Variety of traffic source: It seriously works, especially, if these sources are search engines
comments: It also affect your lens greatly. But also its effect might be minor too. My assumption is; if you do not update your lens for a long time when you get that comment. Its effect is wonderful. But It is really difficult to see any difference on regularly updated lenses.

Just a sharing: I added the external links to the images in my lens on Hello Kitty Birthday Invitations to increase clickout and the ranking did increase from 60K to 22K. The fact that it is recently updated is probably a big factor for my case.

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing -- I certainly haven't been able to figure much out on this topic.

One thing that I have notice, though, is that my SALES seem to jump if I keep the lens updated. It doesn't seem to need to be a significant update, either; just moving some modules around will do it. But it doesn't do much for me lensrank-wise. Maybe it helps with google ranking?
  • susan300 Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:45 pm | delete

  • CoolFoto Sep 3, 2011 @ 12:08 pm | delete
I have not analyzed it as completely as you have. My best lens has the most traffic every week and every day and people buy products recommended therein. You are blessed by a travel angel. Have a great day!
  • quippingqueen Sep 3, 2011 @ 11:31 am | delete
A very informative lens indeed, and hat's off to you for doing the research!
I too noticed a dramatic drop or seismic shift in my tier 1 and tier 2 lenses in June. Methinks either Squidoo had an enormous number of top tier new lenses created or they changed their algorithm to reflect other factors they now considered important in their lens ranking formula.
It all goes to show the importance of keeping an eye on things and looking for patterns that seem to be emerging or disappearing off the radar screen all together!
  • TopMovieSoundtracks Sep 3, 2011 @ 11:08 am | delete
I think that's true about likes and Angel dust only being relevant for a 10 day spa vacation type of boost. I noticed a mini-boost when one lens got blessed by multiple lensmasters than just like coming back from a holiday, had to face the music a week or so later when the lensrank dropped from being artificially inflated.
  • TopMovieSoundtracks Sep 3, 2011 @ 11:03 am | delete

  • OhMe Sep 3, 2011 @ 9:48 am | delete
Very interesting and thanks! My top lens continues to be the one with the most traffic and the most sales even if it is not updated regularly. The lens that I spend the most time on with at least 3 to 4 updates a week stays between 2nd and 3rd tier.

A short term lensrank pop from sales is the only consistent lensrank influencer I've noticed. Everything else seems to surprise me with a varying influence/lack of influence. I imagine it's the interplay of unknowns that makes it hard to pinpoint effects. Thank you for sharing your work.
  • Pastiche Sep 3, 2011 @ 8:49 am | delete
I've personally not done a comprehensive analysis but my gut feeling is you're on the mark with what matters vis a vis lens rank. And that first month tip you share at the very end is important.

A most impressive lens, Darcie. I think I"ll have to read and study it at least 10 more times to take it all in, but I did not want to wait to tell you how much I appreciate your efforts and your sharing this information. Thank you so much!
  • Greekgeek Aug 26, 2011 @ 8:02 pm | delete
Darcie was indeed one inspiration for this lens -- I had been meaning to do it for a while, but her question in SquidU finally was the nudge that got me to do it. Her thread:
    http://www.squidu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=90113

    ;)
  • ---Chazz Aug 27, 2011 @ 8:21 am | delete
So sorry about the error. I had just left that thread and then visited one of Darcie's lenses before this one and my brain didn't completely process the change. My Apologies for the error.
  • hakamike Aug 26, 2011 @ 11:41 am | delete
Great work. Look I'm only very new here and my input is at best trivial or naive but here goes:

Outside traffic, both referrals from other sites and particularly google search hits is what smashed tens of thousands off rank points off my best lenses. I went from mediocre to stellar in a few short days, and the only difference was the traffic and it's source as far as I could tell.
  • Heather426 Aug 26, 2011 @ 11:18 am | delete
Love the lens, and thanks for doing all that analysis! Not sure of anything, I cannot figure it out at all based on my own dashboard !
  • Waxing-Lyrical Aug 26, 2011 @ 11:15 am | delete
Very interesting analysis, GG! I noticed that most of my Tier 1s evaporated in June too. I put it down to the retirement of favourites and lensrolling at the same time. Tier 2 seems to have a glass ceiling now ;)
  • PaulOnBooks Aug 25, 2011 @ 4:21 am | delete
One thing to throw into the mix and complicate the analysis: it's never been mentioned but I believe there's a possibility that lensrank itself is a factor. I won't try to justify that as it's a "hmm, I wonder" thought and not based on any sort of data analysis.

One other point: HQ have stated that multiple blessings have a greater effect = so three "undecayed" blessings = more than three times one blessing.

Excellent lens - thank you for doing this. I'll throw an Angel Blessing in as well to help the data collection :)
  • Greekgeek Aug 25, 2011 @ 12:35 pm | delete
Thank you! Shoot, I'd better start tracking ALL daily stats on this lens to see how it goes up and down. Except it would take a better mathematician than I am to untangle which click, blessing, etc did what.

(Which is just as well: on the one hand, I want to understand what Squidoo is favoring so I can optimize each lens, but on the other hand, if we start pursuing ranking factors instead of writing good content for real people, then we kill the meaningfulness of lensrank.)
  • karmicchristian Aug 24, 2011 @ 11:39 pm | delete
Very nicely analyzed and explained. Thanks for this nice gesture.
  • Othercat Aug 24, 2011 @ 9:07 pm | delete
I've found that clickouts and sales make the biggest difference in my lenses. All of my top lenses have a ctr of at least 700%.

I heard that sales over $30 have a bigger impact than lower $ sales. Can you confirm this?
  • Greekgeek Aug 24, 2011 @ 10:35 pm | delete
I haven't heard that -- evidently I'm still a baby when it comes to affiliate sales! Also, my best CTRs are much less than yours, which may explain why I'm not seeing much impact. You must be doing a better job of targeting your audience and/or nailing popular searches!
  • Othercat Aug 25, 2011 @ 7:29 am | delete
What makes me think that ctr has such a big impact is because I have a tier 2 with less than 15 visits a week, very few likes, no backlinks and only 1 sale. But it stays steady in tier 2 with a ctr of 776%. Plus I've noticed that adding a targeted link list can get a lens near or in tier 2 (but not tier 1).
  • darciefrench Aug 25, 2011 @ 11:45 am | delete
Hubby has a lens like this - I made it about 10 months ago, we do nothing to it, it sits there in tier two. Not complaining! :)
  • franstan Aug 24, 2011 @ 8:10 pm | delete
Thank you for this explanation. I learned a lot from it.
  • darciefrench Aug 24, 2011 @ 7:52 pm | delete
How about number of times a lens is emailed? I remember hearing a tip on a squidu thread, I believe coming down from Megan Casey to email lenses to friends who might be interested in checking them out. This was a tip to help improve lensrank. I keep saying to my fans, please email me your new lenses - that way, I don't have to go looking for them. Since the fan clubs have been deleted, I've lost the luxury of seeing my fav lensmasters' updates. I loved checking out new lenses this way. Feel free to use the contact me button if you'd like my email for this purpose. Back to lensrank - you did a wonderful analysis. I might include the emailing lens factor, and also, it certainly seems that trending information has an impact on lensrank - seasonal lenses are an example.
  • Greekgeek Aug 24, 2011 @ 8:04 pm | delete
I don't think lensrank is using "number of times a lens is emailed" for the ranking formula anymore. Once upon a time, there was an "email" link at the top of our lenses where the Facebook and Tweet buttons are now. There was also a "number of times lens is emailed" counter on our lens stats. It was still there the last time I looked, but it no longer increases, because there's no direct link for people to email a lens and share it.

Of course, if people DO email and share a lens, that brings traffic to the lens, and the visitor's actions on the lens plus the traffic can help lensrank indirectly. So lensrank doesn't count the "emails" directly, but indirectly, they help.

There's a lot of factors like that which make it even harder to figure out what's cause, and what's effect; what Lensrank is actually measuring, and what might be happening *at the same time* even if lensrank doesn't measure it directly. For example, getting a page to rank well on Google for a popular search may not be something the lensrank formula notices directly(traffic + clickouts + sales +...? = LR), but getting lots of visitors from Google -- or, alternatively, getting fewer visitors who are extremely interested in a product in one of your Amazon modules -- could trip factors that lensrank DOES measure.

And thank you for the offer. I may be cutting off my nose to spite my face by concentrating more on search engine traffic than anything else, but I have so many lenses, (a) I don't have time to go around promoting them all manually and (b) I'd be a spammer if I did. But thank you! (Also, my email box is always overflowing... I am terrible at keeping up with email as other Squids have noticed *sad smile* )

One thing you might want to do is group your lenses by traffic or total likes or someother stat and then compare the ones that are very close. That might give you some sort of insight as well.

My guess is that they are using some sort of rating system like a chess rating.

Exactly the kind of analysis I was craving. Thank you for taking the time to publish this. It is easy as a new lensmaster to get caught up in the monster game, but it's good to be reminded that I didn't come here for the clip art :)

Thanks for taking the time to make this and for sharing it with the rest of us. I don't think I would have the patience for this.

Thanks for gathering these factors that do (or may) play into lensrank. Like you, it bothers me that a lens that isn't recently updated drops in the rankings. Some lenses just don't need the updates, and if a lens is the kind that needs to be updated frequently, it will naturally lose traffic as it grows stale. You are very generous to share your raw data. I'm going to play with it and if I notice anything you didn't cover, I'll be back with another comment.

I'd be thrilled if someone better with numbers than I am gave it a look-over. For one thing, I don't know how to calculate standard deviation...thingie... which I think might be relevant in sifting out noise from significant results. (For another, long-term figures would be even more useful, but then this page would be ginormous.)

I am going to have to come back to this Ellen, with my hubby who is very good at analyzing data like this, because my head is spinning. But thank you so much for taking the trouble to put this together AND for being prepared to share :)

My head is spinning too! I had to write that summary just to help remind myself what I'd said.

I wish I were better at statistical analysis. I can look at a chart and guesstimate patterns, but I can't analyze it scientifically, so instead I have to explain my reasoning, which is longwinded.
