Understanding Squidoo Stats: Earnings, Payouts & Royalties

How to Track the Money You Make on Squidoo
Yeah. Squidoo earns MONEY. I can't tell you the best ways to get it, but I can at least help you track it. I discovered a few things myself while writing this tutorial -- including how to get a complete spreadsheet of all our Squidoo earnings!

To View Your Squidoo Earnings Statements...
Choose The "My Stats" Tab on Your Squidoo Dashboard
Right-Click the picture above and choose "Open in New Window" to view your dashboard and follow along with me in this tutorial.
View earnings statements at the BOTTOM of the "My Stats" pane, but let's take a look at the rest first. Note that with this and ALL Squidoo charts, you may hover your cursor over the chart to get info on one point.
This chart doesn't graph monthly payouts, but your cumulative TOTAL: how much you've earned since you started on Squidoo. I didn't make $996 in October '08; that's how much I earned in a year and a half!
Next is some account info. There are two things to note.
(1) View a table of the charity/cash settings for ALL your lenses by clicking Current payment settings for all lenses. When charities fail to maintain contact with Squidoo, they drop off Squidoo's charity list. Lenses donating to MIA charities reset to "Squidoo Charity Fund," a fund divvied up among all Squidoo's partner charities. Click a lens name to edit it and select a new charity.*
(2) The "Change Threshold" button doesn't link to the right spot! To change your Reserve Hopper threshold, go to the Payment settings under your Profile Tab. If you haven't earned enough in a whole year to meet your threshold, your Reserve goes to the Charity Fund.
*(Go to Squidoo Charity Central and scroll to the bottom for a list of all current Squidoo charities. Each is linked to a lens created by the charity to tell us about their work.)
Squidoo Earnings Statements
They're under the "My Stats" Dashboard Tab, down near the bottom:

Ignore the Lensmaster Referrals -- click on it and be disappointed. I've never gotten any referral bonuses either -- why do people join Squidoo, then not make any lenses?
Anyway, what you want is the Earnings Statements pulldown menus.
- "My Earnings" shows a lens-by-lens breakdown of payment sources: Ad Pool, Chitka Ads, Amazon royalties, eBay, etc.
- "My Payments" shows a lens-by-lens breakdown of payment recipients: you, or the charities you've selected.
Wait, WHERE Are the Earnings Statements?
And what is this stupid pie chart?

If you select "Previous Payout," and "My Earnings", you get this What the Heck? Pie Chart.
if you hover your cursor over the chart, a popup tells you each ad source and what percent of your total earnings came from that source (Ad Pool, Amazon, Infolinks, Chitka on mine).
If you chose a "Time Period" of longer than a month, the pie chart is accompanied by a month-by-month chart. In fact, if you picked "Life to date," you'll get a month-by-month chart of all your payouts (with Paypal transaction fee already deducted).
With apologies for the pink panther scribbles, here's what you get when you select "My Payments" and "Life-to-Date":

See that tiny little icon at upper right? You can download a spreadsheet of your life-to-date Payments! It's in Excel format, readable by most spreadsheet programs. You can download Earnings Statements too, but only back to October 2009, which is when the current income breakdowns (Ad Pool, Infolinks, etc) started being tabulated.
There are two kinds of Squidoo statements: My Earnings, and My Payments. Let's look at Payments first.
If You Pick a "My Payments" Report...
...and click on a month's name, you get a statement like this:
I've snipped this statement so you can see the top, middle, and bottom.
This is a breakdown of who received payment from each lens, with your payments in the "Cash Paid" column, then charities.
The "Total paid in cash" listed at the top is your payout after Paypal's transaction fee is deducted.
The transaction fee is 2% of your total payout, up to $1. If you make anything more than $50, you're getting a transaction fee discount. If you want to be really stingy, you could set your Payment Threshold very high. For example, if you set it to $100, you'd still pay $1, which comes out to a 1% transaction fee.
If you didn't meet your Payment Threshold, your payout for this month will be listed under the "Reserve Hopper" subtotal.
How does Squidoo determine each lens payout? Let's review.
Where Squidoo Payments Come From
(A Brief Half-Assed Explanation)
(1) You earn commissions directly for sales from certain merchant modules like Amazon and eBay. Squidoo splits the commission with you 50-50. Since some merchants have a 45-day money-back-guarantee, Squidoo has to wait two months to get paid and pay us. That's why Squidoo Pay Day is for two months ago.(2) Squidoo distributes advertising earnings to lenses according to an in-house rating called Lensrank. Lensrank is a measure of how your lens performs compared to all other Squidoo lenses. Lensrank factors include how many readers click on, recent sales, recent traffic, recent likes and "blessings" from Squidoo lensmasters.
For each kind of advertising (Google Adsense, Text Links), 45% of the earnings goes to Squidoo, 5% to the Squidoo Charity fund, and 50% goes to lensmasters. Our half is divided into 3 tiers, the top tier roughly 20% of the total, the second tier roughly 17%, and the third tier roughly 8%.
PAYOUT TIERS:
- The 2000 lenses which achieved the best average lensrank for that month are tier 1
- the next 8000 lenses are tier 2
- the next 75,000 lenses are tier 3
- We often treat these as if the tier cutoffs are at lensrank 2000, 10,000, and 85,000, but in fact, the cutoffs are a little fuzzy: Tier one is the 2000 lenses with the best average lensrank for the month, and the best average may not come out to exactly 1, exactly 2, exactly 3, down to exactly 2000. So a lens that averaged 2018 for the month could be tier one.
Christene's useful Squidoo Payday FAQ has a month-by-month record of tier payouts going back to the beginning of Squidoo. Thanks, Christene!
Three things to note. First, Squidoo reserves the right to adjust the payout percentages and tier cutoffs. ALL tier payouts have more than tripled since I started. Second, lenses don't earn advertising payouts until their first full month of existence (they can earn commissions from the get-go). Third, the lensrank cutoffs are different for Infolinks and Chitka, because we're allowed to "Opt out" of one or both on a lens-by-lens basis. Let me demonstrate:
If You Picked a "My Earnings" Report...
...and click on a particular month, you see something like:
This is a random selection of earnings breakdowns from my last payout. The list is arranged from top earning to lowest-earning lenses.
What's all this tier mumbo jumbo? Remember what I said about how you can "opt out" of certain kinds of ads, which rejiggers the tier payouts for that particular kind of ad.
For instance: the "Ancient Greece Odyssey" lens is my baby, and I've turned off all ads except the default (wish it was text-only ads, but anyway). This means that somewhere out there, a lens at about Lensrank 2001 is getting top tier payouts for Infolinks and Chitka, second tier payouts from the Ad Pool.
If your primary goal is to make money on Squidoo, don't opt out of Infolinks. For me, content is primary, earnings secondary, so I hide ads when they detract too much from my content.
I notice that Chitka appears to have only two tiers. Apparently the sum total that Squidoo's taking in from Chitka isn't enough to have a third tier.
How do I know which tier is which? I just look at the numbers. There's Ad Pool payouts at $19.42, $3.30, and $.17. That must be the three tiers for the Ad Pool this month.
There's one more thing you can do here. Click on a lens name to view historical payouts for that particular lens.
Lens Stats - Earnings & Royalties for One Lens
Under the "Stats" for an Individual Lens
(1) Click on a lens name on a monthly earnings statement under the "My Stats" tab.
(2) View "Stats" for an individual lens under the "My Lenses" part of your dashboard, then click on the "Earnings" sub-tab for that lens:

This table will continue down the page listing any month where the lens received payout. As you see, if the lens sold anything through a module like Amazon, the date of the sale is listed.
Then, you can click on the Royalties tab to see (1) a simplified list of month-by-month payouts for that lens, and (2) details on any sales that earned you a commission.
For example (ugly pink line indicates where I snipped the chart to show top and bottom only):

Note that this is royalties/payments prior to the Paypal Transaction fee.
THIS is useful, because you can then study your lens to see which modules are making sales, which aren't. I"m no marketeer, but I've learned a lot about lens traffic and lensrank by watching my traffic stats, so I bet you can learn a lot about earning money on Squidoo by watching your Royalties stats!
Captain Squid has reported seeing earnings from Amazon, Cafepress, and eBay listed here for sure. My Squidoo Modules index lists (I hope) all the commission-earning modules.

Understanding traffic stats can teach you how to Squidoo
UPDATE 5/10/11: I've created a tutorial on how to export all the useful dashboard stats to Excel format, even if Squidoo didn't give us a way to do it!
What Are Squidoo's Payout Tiers?
If you're paying close attention, you'll realize that Tier 1 is not Lensrank 1 to 2000. Instead, it's the two thousand lenses with the best AVERAGE lensrank for each month. Ponder this.
Then check out Fluffanutta's post on Squidoo Tiers, estimating the actual lensrank cutoffs for each tier.

Good luck! Alas, ! I have no tips on Squidoo moneymaking. "Create good content, learn SEO, and toss in an Amazon module if you can find something good that fits your topic" is not the most effective strategy! But hey, it earned me the money to buy this laptop. ;)
