What exactly is the definition of "popularity" on Squidoo? I'm not sure this was ever fully explained.

I am guilty of squid liking without commenting sometimes. I don't know why, same for blog commenting, I sometimes get the feeling I'm barging in someones house saying "Whasss up!" LOL, it's irrational, because I know people love comments, I know I do. I'm getting better at it though.
  • BrandonSharp Sep 12, 2011 @ 12:43 pm | delete

interesting take, prioritizing popularity over money-making. i suppose those are mutually inclusive, but framing the challenge in terms of people liking your lenses rather than how much money you are making spins it in a more positive and community-focused light :) thanks!

I've marked a lot to come back as i know I'll read them again and again. I'm still trying to figure out the fan club thing. That was a new thing I picked up from here. Thanks!

Joining the internet world with squidoo has been challenging ...

brought up with the 'to give and not expect anything in return' mantra has made the back scratching element of social networking difficult for me, heightened by the advent of the new points system, which adds a self conciousness to the whole operation.

But I also I firmly believe in respecting and mastering the rules of the 'game', wherever I am, so I am trying; probably rather clumsily, to grasp networking in all its forms. I am genuinely finding your lenses easy to understand, and therefore really helpful, so thank you Katina.

I am not looking for a lot of exposure on my lenses at the moment, as they need a lot more work before they stand up to critical scrutiny, so I'm not asking for a visit here...just letting you know that appreciate your gift of time in these lenses. Poppy

I think there's aidfference between interesting, good lenses and the money makers... but I could be wrong. In fact, I'd love to hear your opinion on that ---
  • squidoohelp Oct 15, 2010 @ 12:44 pm | delete
Sure: money makers are often not the best lenses ever. On the other hand, some great lenses are also money makers - or at least in top tier a lot of the time.

  • greenspirit Sep 26, 2010 @ 7:24 pm | delete
When I first came to Squidoo I felt really reticent about contacting people I didn't know. This new system of seeing who has 'thumbs upped you' seems to make the whole process feel much more genuine and courteous.
It sends you on great voyages of discovery around lenses and lens makers, and has made me feel much more comfortable about participating. So as Squidoo is about sharing and caring, this is a great development, for me and perhaps quite a few others as well.
  • Ella90 Sep 26, 2010 @ 3:23 pm | delete

  • Waxing-Lyrical Sep 9, 2010 @ 2:42 pm | delete
Giving others help and encouragement, as well as adding great content, should be our goal. Popularity may well be a by-product of those efforts :)
  • jptanabe Sep 9, 2010 @ 12:25 pm | delete
Love all your hints, and that you updated with the monsters! And yes, the most important point is to write great lenses - without that you can't be popular anyway.

I am back again, I added How do you thank an Angel parts 1 and 2, and since you have always been someone I respect, and trust I guess that makes you popular in my book :) Now, with the powers vested in me may I add *Blessed* by an Angel to a lens and person that truly deserves it.

Great lens and very well structured and written. In terms of popularity, I think it comes in time. In my humble opinion, the key is to focus on what you do and help people as you do so, the rest will follow. Of course, it pays to be popular, so I think there is an element of consciousness that need to be there regarding popularity, but we must not depend on it - if not discouragement will be waiting to happen.
  • CherylK Sep 29, 2009 @ 12:48 pm | delete

  • KathyMcGraw Sep 16, 2009 @ 9:34 am | delete
Ahh I learned all about the popularity thing on another platform before coming to Squidoo. Popularity can be like a big balloon with a needle waiting to prick it. Best thing IMO is to just be yourself, write original content, and respect others. I think everyone need sto remember what their goal is, what motivates them to write, and then write. Giving back, and reciprocating has always been important in any community. But being "popular" well, that's not my motivation. I just like to write :)
  • Aug 25, 2009 @ 10:31 am | delete
    Hi, Katinka!
Thanks for adding your blessed lenses to my Squid Angel Thank You lens. I really like this one, especially where you listed the "other" consquences of being popular on Squidoo.

I agree that the more you give to others and the community, the more you get. You have personally set a great example of that!
    Blessings to YOU!

Broke a record? Far from it. There are lensmasters with thousands of fans. Usually squidangels of longer standing. Seth probably has more fans as well :) I started this lens when I had only a 300 or something. Just a matter of consistently doing many of the things which are advised here. I don't claim to do all.
  • ClassyGals May 30, 2009 @ 10:47 am | delete
Thanks for all the help on squidoo popularity. I think that its a combination of the things that you have listed. I wish I could have as many fans, though. You probably broke a record here. Five stars and congrats on the purple star!

I compensate for my sharp tongue by rating LOTS of lenses (over 5000 at this point), blessing them (since this April), linking to them from a few lenses and my blog and helping people out in the areas of SEO and design. I guess on the whole people like that :)

Ok, this has helped a lot! But it seems to me like you really speak your mind on the posts that I've seen of yours. You don't brown-nose or anything and yet you have lots of fans. That's great!

Great work! I just realized that those voting plexos always make for a fun lens. That's one module I don't use enough. I agree with you about making a lens featuring other lensmasters' lenses. I've made a few of them. It's a great way to get to know the community and get yourself out there, too.

As for what gives lensmasters the most fans/popularity, I tend to think it's the "helpful" factor. Those that reach out and offer help and advice on the forums, via guestbooks, or linking to other lensmasters' lenses seem to have the most fans, and not coincidentally, do the best here on Squidoo!
  • dc64 Mar 28, 2009 @ 2:42 pm | delete
The one thing I like about the most popular lensmasters is that you can click on any of their lenses and see the work they've put into it. I've seen so many lenses with just a few modules, a picture, monetary links and a guestbook. Are you kidding? This was a great idea, and I need to do a couple of those "My favorite..." lenses.

Those are some great tips. Personally I found that my lenses weren't rated or visited by other Squidoo members much (even though they did get plenty of outside traffic), until I started visiting, rating and leaving comments myself. So it all sort of comes back to you :)

Anyway, great lens! Sending you a SquidAngel blessing :)

Great information, very useful if trying to climb the ladder of Squidoo. I will take away your advice and hopefully improve my own. I will be looking at your "least popular lenses" now and will give you the score you deserve. This has been a pleasure to read, (as has all of your other lenses) so I am sure you will get the reward you deserve. Thank you 5*

    Hey, Spirituality

Great lens, very informative and to the point.
initially i thought this lens would be somewhat comical... but i really do see now how becoming popular on squidoo can help business or just getting the word out on things that matter to you.
    Thanks for the Info.

Keep up the good work, Daniel

  • spirituality Sep 17, 2008 @ 3:05 am | delete
You don't. That is: have a txt file for stuff you often have to copy paste. Have it open when you do an e-mail to a squidoo lensmaster. That way you can even make a custom squidoo signature.
  • Margo_Arrowsmith Sep 16, 2008 @ 7:09 am | delete
I love to comment on other peoples' lenses and get very frustrated when they don't have one, or don't have a contact me!

But how do you do a signature on your squidoo e-mail?

Ah, this is a terrific and topical lens. I like to have the plexography modules so that lensmasters can add their favorite lenses -- one of my first lenses two years ago featured lensmasters' lenses before there was the featured lensmaster module -- that's a terrific one!
  • Mortira Sep 7, 2008 @ 6:46 pm | delete
Thank you so much for this fantastic lens! All the information is great for newcomers, and very reassuring for lensmasters who thought they were on the right track.

I have submitted my 'most popular' lenses. I hope by votes you mean people ranking (with stars) the lens...

Great lens, more subject matter to think about.

  • WritingforYourWealth Aug 31, 2008 @ 10:40 pm | delete
I'm probably too new to be popular (not that I was ever extrovert enough to play the popularity game anyway), but this is a nice lens, and it's great that you're encouraging people to promote their own stuff :)
  • spirituality Aug 27, 2008 @ 3:50 am | delete
Homeopath - you are too modest. Your top ranking lens has a whopping no. of 34 votes. That certainly qualifies (and I added it to the link plexo for you).
  • The_Homeopath Aug 25, 2008 @ 8:39 pm | delete
Hmmm...I'm not sure that I really have a "popular" lens within Squidoo itself. At least, not at the level of 50 people rating it or anything like that. Give me a year and I'll get back to you! :-)
  • WhippetTalk Aug 25, 2008 @ 3:50 pm | delete
Great advice. I think most people want to be popular. And my advice is to give the community by commenting and rating as many lenses as you can. Build friendships and participate. In turn, people will do the same for you. Be honest and genuine.
  • Aug 25, 2008 @ 12:41 pm | delete
I think that interacting with others on Squidoo is a big part of being a popular lensmaster. Of course a guestbook is important; without a guestbook I don't know who is visiting my lenses and if I don't who is visiting my lenses, how can I visit their lenses?
  • EelKat Aug 25, 2008 @ 12:22 pm | delete
Guestbooks ARE A MUST! I feature a lot of folks lenses on my lenses, and if they didn't put a guestbook on it, I'm not likely to feature it. Why? Because I really like to interact with others, so I love to leave comments and read other's comments as well. 8 times out of 10, if I read a lens, I leave a comment.

oh yeah... and besides 1 stars, another disadvantage to being *too* popular is you might start getting hate mail in your emails! One of my lenses became very popular because so many people hated it! LOL! I think it's funny the things people an find to get mad about, too. Weird.

Weirdest thing is I never expected to become *popular* here on Squidoo, it just sort of happened as a result of people liking my lenses and than recommended them to other people, who in turn recommended them to more people. Mostly from me posting on forums for writers and costumers. So I really recommend posting on forums. It helps lots!
