Ramkitten's Purple Star Lenses

The Color Purple on Squidoo

Those small purple stars you see floating around in lens bios -- they represent a little boost. And I don't mean in lensrank, although it gives you a bit of that too, temporarily anyway.

But what isn't temporary is the boost of confidence and morale that little purple star bestows out here on the huge world wide web, where it's easy to feel SO very small and insignificant.

On Squidoo, though, you're not always just one wee twinkle amidst a huge galaxy of stars. Sometimes, you're made to feel like you shine a bit brighter, knowing at least someone, somewhere, not only noticed your work but thought it deserved some recognition -- a purple stamp of approval.

So, I saw a couple of people's purple star lensographies and thought, hey, why not? I'll make one, too. So here's my own purple star promotional piece (I'm lovin' all this alliteration, can you tell?), along with a poll and a p- ... a p- ... nope, no p-word for quiz, I guess. But there's one of those, also.

My Favorite Purple Star Lens

Why is this my favorite? Well, for one, it was the first lens I ever made and, so far, my best performer. But, more importantly, it's about one of my passions -- Search and Rescue, which is the most meaningful thing I feel I've ever done.

Search And Rescue
Becoming a Search and Rescue Volunteer

Are you intrigued by stories about wilderness rescues and searches for missing hikers or mountain climbers? If so, perhaps becoming a Search and Rescue -- often...

My Most Positive Purple Star

The title sums it up. And once I got to 100, I felt like I could have kept on going.

Thanksgiving
100 Things I'm Thankful For

Writer Claudette Mitchell started a discussion in the SquidU forums titled, What are you thankful for?  She wrote: Although I knew how important it was to...

Another Purple Star for Another Passion

I love walking the long trails of the world. I've done a few, but my bucket list just keeps growing and growing.

Backpacking
Great Long-Distance Walks Of The World

As a long-distance backpacker with an Appalachian Trail thru-hike under my feet and many other treks on my ever-growing bucket list, I love reading about the...

A Purple Star For My Market Garden Experience

There was a time in my life where most of my food came from a farm, including my one-acre vegetable garden and fruit trees, which produced enough to also sell a bunch at a self-serve stand out in front of the house and at the local farmer's market. Here, I share some tips for how to spruce up your own stands and booths, so you hopefully sell out by the end of each day.

Farmers Market
Ideas For Your Farmers Market Booth Or Vegetable Stand

Once upon a time, Steve and I lived on a farm. And on that farm we had a garden full of organic vegetables. Intending to grow only what we needed for ourselves...

A Purple Star for an Incredible Place

I was fortunate to get a permit to hike to what truly is a natural wonder, located near the Arizona/Utah border in an other-worldly landscape.

Geology
Hiking The Wave In Coyote Buttes

Until a friend invited me on a hiking trip in northern Arizona and southern Utah, I'd not heard of The Wave. But I realized when we arrived that I'd seen...

A Purple Star for One of my Favorite Places on the Planet

I live an hour and a half from Grand Canyon National Park, which I visit as often as I'm able. I'll never get tired of looking at it or hiking below its rims.

Grand Canyon
Hiking The Grand Canyon, Rim To Rim

There is SO much one could write about hiking in the Grand Canyon, but I want to focus on hiking rim to rim using the popular "corridor" trails. I...

A Purple Star for One Way to Get from Place to Place

That is, for how to use a map and compass, which is one of the skills we use in Search & Rescue. Before I joined the team, I could follow a trail and, to some degree, read a topographic map, but I had a lot more to learn and hadn't touched a compass since I was a kid. Now I never head into the backcountry without both.

Navigation
Basic Map And Compass

I can't say there's just one thing you should never go without when heading into the backcountry -- in fact, I have a whole list of what I consider

A Little Purple Garnish for a Favorite Dish

It's so easy, even I can make this one! (And that's saying a lot.)

Cooking
Huevos Rancheros: Breakfast (Or Dinner) At Our House

Being a New England native without a south-of-the-border bone in my body, I'd not heard of this dish until my mustached man, Steve, an Arizona native, prepared...

A Bit of Purple for Being Prepared

Especially now that I'm involved with Search & Rescue, I'm a big proponent of being prepared any time someone goes for a hike, no matter the distance. Even on what's intended to be a short dayhike, the best laid plans can and do go astray, so best to have some important but light-weight gear in a small pack.

Hiking
The 24-Hour Pack: Hike Smart, Be Prepared, Be Safe

As a Search and Rescue volunteer, I've participated in many missions that wouldn't have happened in the first place had those we went looking for carried just...

A Purple Star for Part of a Great Trip

During a two-week trip to the Boundary Waters and other parts of northern Minnesota, Steve and I spontaneously stopped at a historic reenactment called Rendezvous Days.

Minnesota
Rendezvous Days At Minnesota's Grand Portage National Monument

Each year on the first full weekend of August, National Park Service staff and hundreds of volunteers re-create a fun and very authentic Voyageur Rendezvous...

A Purple Star for My Birthday

Well, I didn't get the star ON my birthday but for the day I was born. And, believe it or not, other things happened on that day.

Birthday
On The Day I Was Born: March 28, 1969

At 6:05 on the morning of Friday, March 28th, 1969, I made my very first appearance on the world stage. I was pink and wrinkly and probably not looking my best,...

Another Purple Star for Another Favorite Place

I love the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes. I've been on two outdoor adventures there and can't wait to get back for many more.

Minnesota
A Trip To The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

While paddling close to shore in the Boundary Waters one evening, looking for wildlife as the setting sun created artwork on the surface of the still lake, my...

A Purple Star for a Story About a Memorable Person

This is a true story from the Appalachian Trail, along with follow-ups from fellow A.T. alumni who've seen this man called "Screamer" since.

Appalachian Trail
A Man Called "Screamer"

Standing thirty feet away or thirty inches, he spoke in the same loud voice. That's why we called him Screamer. "We" were hikers on the Appalachian Trail.

A Purple Star for a Star

I accidentally ran into a favorite performer of mine from the world of country music and formed a friendship with one of his band members.

Country Music
Meeting Trace Adkins: My Favorite Country Music Man

"Trace ... Adkins ... is ... sitting ... behind you," my husband whispered, accentuating each word. We were at our gate in the Nashville Airport, waiting...

A Purple Star for a Piece of Jun ... Uh, Vehicular History

This is the story of the little rusty Datsun that could. Keep on running, that is, despite its long, tough life on the rutted, rock-covered dirt roads of the southwest as well as a couple of years as a lawn ornament.

Cars
My Husband Brought Home A $100 Datsun

Guess what!" Steve said, grinning like a naughty kid. He'd just walked through the door and hadn't even said hello or "how was your day?"...

A Purple Star for a Faraway Place

I created this lens before my three-month trip to Nepal, where I prepared for a book project that I'm still working on.

Nepal
My Adventure In Nepal: The Himalaya Rescue Squad

Late one night, I received the following message via my LinkedIn account: "Dear Deb, I think it is time to find a person who wants to write our story of missing...

Proofreading Gets a Purple Star

Some people give back to the Squidoo community by offering the expertise on things like SEO and how to create great sales pages that actually sell. My way is by offering to edit people's lenses for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Free Editing For Squidoo Lenses And Common Writing Mistakes To Look For

I'd be happy to help. As long as your lens isn't against Squidoo Terms of Service (TOS), spam, or in a language other than English, I'll give it...

A Purple Star for Appalachian Trail STUFF

I've written many lenses about various aspects of the Appalachian Trail and my six-month adventure from Georgia to Maine. This time, I compiled a bunch of recommended reading and guidebooks, documentaries about life on the trail, A.T. prints and posters, and miscellaneous Appalachian Trail memorabilia. And, for some reason, someone thought this two-page lens worthy of some purple.

Appalachian Trail

Are you interested in the Appalachian Trail? Have you hiked all or some of that famous long-distance footpath? If you're looking for an Appalachian Trail guidebook,...

A Purple Star for a Little About Me and My Squidoo Lenses

How cool! When it came to re-apply (re-register or whatever it's called) for Giant Squid status, we were asked to include an "About Me" sort of lens, so I offered up this one, which was then awarded some purple praise in the form of another little star. Thanks for the much-appreciated vote of confidence!

Lensography
Ramkitten's Life & Lensography

Some people laugh at my nickname, but, me, I'm proud of it. And it makes me smile. Why? Because "Ramkitten" reminds me of special times and fun adventures.

A Purple Keepsake for my Mementos Lens

This lens features stories about some of the things around my home that have sentimental value to me.

Memorabilia
Mementos Help Make A House Homey

I like to think I'm not materialistic. In fact, I can't stand clutter and am always looking for things neither my husband nor I have used in a long time...

A Purple Star for Another Lens About the Long Green Tunnel

That's one of the ways in which long-distance hikers refer to the Appalachian Trail. Though there are countless vistas along its more than 2,100 miles, you do often hike surrounded by trees and, for some lengthy stretches, thick green rhododendron bushes.

This is a lens I made about all sorts of things you don't learn in the guidebooks. On September 1, 2011, I received my twenty-first purple star, which was awarded to...

A Purple Star for a Lens Made for a Quest

The quest was for Giant Squids to make a "red carpet" lens featuring at least one Amazon module. I'd recently seen something (which is among the featured products on the lens) that made me laugh and think, man, that is NOT something you'd want to take backpacking. So that sparked the idea for this lens....

What NOT To Take on the Appalachian Trail

Well before I began my own A.T. thru-hike with 40 pounds on my back, including food for several days and a few liters of water, I was hearing stories of hikers...

The Squidoo Purple Star Pay-it-Forward Privilege

Purple star loveThis wasn't always the case, but, nowadays, anyone -- Giant Squid or not -- is eligible to receive a purple star. And, if you do get one, you then have the privilege of nominating someone else's lens for a purple pat on the back as well. It's not a guarantee that a purple star will be bestowed on that lens of your choice, but chances are, if it's of the high quality that you feel it is and doesn't already have a piece of purple, then it will get one.

So favorite those lenses you really like in case that opportunity to nominate comes around.

Congratulations on all those purple stars. They were well deserved and you've always been one of my favourite writers on Squidoo as well as an all-round helpful person -- definitely someone whose work I'd point to as an example of the best that's on the site!
