Thanks for this article. Those tips about how to search URLs on Google are priceless and I've never heard that anywhere else. I'm relatively new to Squidoo and am building a lens or maybe more to start compiling what I am learning about making money here (my pre-Squidoo online business is already very successful). Maybe I'll get ambitious and build a collection of helpful links including this one. For now I'm bookmarking your page. Oh, the only thing I disagree with in the article - I have every intention of making a million dollars ... and soon. ;) Cheers, - Erika Awakening

I am absolutely clueless regarding SEO. No matter how hard I try to follow advice, either I get it wrong or it does me no good. I think my mind glazes over when I start reading about SEO.

Awww. I desperately need to rewrite this lens with a better tutorial... it IS a little dense and not well-organized.

Just a quick tip for everyone re 'googling' - there seems to be a bit of a glitch that you need to be aware of. If you do an 'allin' search, don't just go with that figure given just below your search - check out the 'pages 1 to 10' right down there at the bottom. Click on page 10 to check out just how many competing sites there are. They can differ massively and not doing the page check could lose you a chance to rank well.
Here's what I mean -
Search allintitle:best horse blankets (I know, it's a geeky search but it's purely to show you how this works)
It brings back searches 1-10 of 1480 searches - so you might think that too much.
Go down to the bottom of the page and click on the 10 of pages 1-10 down there in blue.
That expands out from page 1 to 19 once you do this.
Now click on page 19 to move on and.....
There are only 188 relevant searches that affect you, Google knocks the rest out.
So a search that first showed 1480 possibles in effect only has 188.
Well worth keeping in mind when you are doing your due keyword diligence.
Hope this helps!

Yes, this is a very important tip! I need to rewrite this lens for several reasons, this being one of them. It falls under "the good news." The bad news is that since Google now matches many synonyms, exact phrase matches aren't as effective as they used to be. (For a real-world example, my "how to build a kite" lens used to nail spot #2 for that fairly-trafficked long tail search, but has now been bumped to page 2 because "how to make a kite" is now treated as exactly the same search even when the user types "build.")

Advanced Tip #2 is a great point, and reminds us to write for users. Using the "fast food" example, why not mention Wendys, Taco Bell, and others? Depending on the subject, one could discuss the health risks of fast food, where the food comes from, and more...creating the long tail that will drive the majority of the traffic. In otherwords, be thorough and more traffic (and links) will come.

This was useful thanks. I wonder if using quite a lot of zazzle illustrations with clickouts affects google ranking of your page on search engines? Do you know?
• Greekgeek Oct 19, 2011 @ 7:54 pm | delete
I don't think clickouts make much or any difference with search engine rankings. Instead, clickouts mostly help Squidoo lensrank, which is a nice side effect of using Zazzle graphics.

Why I think this: Google and other search engines can't (I hope!) monitor everything you do on websites they don't own. Sure, they can see when you click from a Google search to a webpage, and they pay attention! But unless the software on Google Adsense ads is spying on us more than they're legally allowed to, Google isn't tracking the rest of what you do when, say, you click on links elsewhere on a Squidoo page. Even if they are spying on us, they couldn't use those clicks as a meaningful component of their ranking different websites. Only some webpages have Adsense on them.

However, indirectly, Zazzle ads MAY have a small, small impact. Google is a little suspicious of pages with TOO much advertising on them relative to the amount of useful content they have. Pictures are useful to readers. But if the pictures are only there to make money for the author, then Google starts to think, "Hmm." Confusingly, Google tells us to add a hidden rel="nofollow" tag to Paid Links, links people pay us to feature, and many people assume that this suggestion applies to ALL affiliate links, including Zazzle.

For this reason, in my "Create a Zazzle Gallery for Squidoo" templates, I include rel=nofollow to keep us safe. Also, I recommend that you label each image with an alt-tag that describes it in 2-4 words. For example,

The words say, "Look, it's not just an ad, it's relevant to my page on ducks!" Don't cheat and repeat your keywords too much in alt-text; be honest and describe what the picture is. But at least the words show unique, real content, not just "there's a generic ad of some sort here." (Since Google can tell it's an affiliate link. It knows what Zazzle is.)

Read about Google's reasoning here:

I recommend AJ's Keyword Research Lens too. A really great free tool which often gets overlooked is Google's Webmaster Tools. I recommend everyone to use Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools. Within the Tools it gives a list of Keyword Searches relating to your site, numbers of searches and Ranking positions. Plus gives good analysis of on-page SEO and what to correct to optimize your site pages.

Great Lens and definitely will give it a thumbs up.
Best regards,

Thank you for this lens! I thought I had a pretty good handle on SEO, but I have to admit that I learned something new from almost every paragraph. If I could make a suggestion to Squidoo, I would ask them to create a favorites function section that would make it easy for lenmasters to keep track of articles and authors they find interesting or helpful. That's something I find myself wishing for from time to time as I browse through Squidoo... I really wish I had one now.

Looks like none of the Squidoo related directories actually work (except lensroll that is), they're either all closing down or no longer accepting submissions...
Any other such directories specifically targeting Squidoo lenses that you know of?
• Greekgeek May 15, 2011 @ 12:18 pm | delete
Only one I know of besides those is Squidom.com. Looks like it's still up and running. (Confession time: I almost never use directory submission; I mostly build backlinks by writing more content that links to existing content. I prefer to be creating new content at the same time rather than having to stop writing articles to promote them. :) )

Great lens... I was wondering how do you think the farming Panda has affected SEO for Squidoo lenses. So far I've not seen less lenses on result pages than I usually do but I'm just starting here anyway.
• Greekgeek Mar 22, 2011 @ 4:27 pm | delete
So far the Panda update doesn't seem to have impacted Squidoo as all. I'm still trying to figure out why Hubpage got hit and Squidoo didn't.
This is actually a topic that interests me a great deal... I've been pulling up charts from Quantcast and Alexa and following the whole farmer update/panda update on my blog, Squidbits:
greekgeek.istad.org
(which is possibly the worst domain name ever as far as SEO is concerned ;) )
• ACreativeDream Mar 23, 2011 @ 10:26 am | delete
I read quite an interesting analysis about how it may be because Squidoo had banned lots of "spam likely" subjects. However, I am still quite lost. For every potential cause for downrank there's at least one website that has been affected and does the opposite. Like duplicated content and suite101.
And now things are changing again and people are reporting being back to normal :)
• Greekgeek Mar 23, 2011 @ 1:40 pm | delete
That was either my analysis or Potpiegirl's. However, I as I said in my blog post, that shouldn't impacted Hubpages more than Squidoo as their spam ratios are fairly similar. From my own anaylsis (on my Squidbits blog), the one factor I found that differed between Squidoo and the other sites that got penalized -- including Hubpages -- was the bounce rate.

However, as you say, it's changing again, since Google is continuing to tweak the algorithm. The data from those few weeks was fairly illuminating, however -- it's a little murky exactly what factors were in play, since Google doesn't give away its changes and other sites are reluctant to share their data (Mahalo even CLOAKED all its data!) -- but still, it gave us much to think about.

The short story is that Hubpages' U.S. traffic dropped to match Squidoo's, and Squidoo's was unchanged. The Panda Update has not yet been rolled out overseas, so expect more teeth-gnashing when it is!

• Swisstoons Mar 3, 2011 @ 2:33 pm | delete
Here's what has always been maddening to me: You say one's keywords and keyword phrases should be well-searched, but as UNIQUE as possible (especially within Squidoo!) in order to rank high on Google's search page and bring a targeted audience to the lens. In contrast, you say one's tags should be SHARED with other Squidoo lenses...the more popular, the better! But then you say that your primary tag should also be your main keyword or keyword phrase. Don't these instructions conflict with one another? What am I too dumb to catch onto here?
• Greekgeek Mar 4, 2011 @ 12:48 pm | delete
If the keyword phrase you're targeting is long and specific, then use the more general 1-2 words from it for your primary tag. So for example, if you're targeting Sony Bravia LCD TVs, then use "LCD TVs" for the primary tag.

When picking a primary tag, if you can't easily construct a general phrase out of your whole keyword phrase, go with a general phrase that's going to hook your lens up with other good lenses in the same niche.
• Swisstoons Mar 4, 2011 @ 1:40 pm | delete
Thank you very much for the clarification! :) Now, I get it. By the way, this is a very informative and highly useful lens; even moreso, now. Favorited and gave it a thumbs up.
• ryschill Mar 3, 2011 @ 10:33 am | delete
Excellent Content!!! Thanks. To be clear, I'm a web retailer and I did research and found the most trafficked key words with the lowest competition for our store. Buying a url that combines these popular key words will not create better organic results for my store than my store's brand name url? ie if my brand name is Cafe Ole and url is cafeole.com versus coffeesmachinesandespressoaccessories.com You get the idea. No organic results advantage?
• Greekgeek Mar 4, 2011 @ 12:43 pm | delete
Hm. When it comes to a store or business, I think you want the URL to be your brand or store name. You can have sub-pages on your website to target particular keywords like "coffee machines" "espresso accessories," but I think you want your main URL to be something you can type in.

Keep in mind that over time, keywords or traffic algorithms can change. You may find you need to adjust keywords later to reflect traffic trends or growth and changes in your store. But your store name should stay the same! Use on-page content plus links to target the best keywords.

Disclaimer: I am an informed amateur who's studied SEO for several years, not a professional SEO industry expert. You might had better double-check with a pro.

You want your lens to link TO good pages on a topic, and have links FROM good pages on a topic. There's no point in adding a reciprocal link to a crummy site..................Nice Artical
• cabinet-knob-pulls Feb 24, 2011 @ 11:30 pm | delete
herfore, long tail keywords don't have as much "pull" as they used to, and I don't recommend gambling your whole SEO strategy on one long tail phrase.

This is just what I need right now! Thank you for all the resources. I have 4 lenses right now. I deleted one today. It was somewhat of a duplicate of another lens. I'm working on a new one and plan to use as much of this info as I can to get search engine traffic. My top lens right now moved up in page rank by being active in forums here at Squidoo, but I'm not reaching my target audience. Sales with Amazon and sharing information with parents who need it are my main goals. Thanks for creating this lens!

This is a great resource! My company is preparing to launch a $5 course aimed at website marketers. Although some of the advice differs slightly, I believe your advice is well tuned for Squidoo lens masters. We will be launching the second part of the course in Q2 of 2011 with a significant section on Squidoo. I would love to site some of your information in our course as you really get the point across eloquently. I wouldn't be so presumptive as to put an a href "link" in your comment section without asking. I will ask you to take a spin through the course site which still needs finishing touches but will be ready to launch very soon. I'm conservative when it comes to allowing people to post links in my guestbooks -- you know exactly why -- but you look like an honest SEO company trying to do what we're all trying to do, practice white hat SEO. So let me hook that up for you. I appreciate the fact that you didn't just link drop and run. :)

Nice Lens.. But I wanted to ask you arent long tail keywords history with Google??
• Greekgeek Feb 12, 2011 @ 11:26 am | delete
It is, by most accounts. Or at least, it's changed nature. Google is putting less weight on artificial long-tail targeting (using a long tail phrase in the URL, for example), but it's still noticing when you have different words and phrases that it thinks are related to a particular topic. I think related search is becoming more important.

I need to rewrite this page; I haven't really given it a good top to bottom rewrite in about 2 years, instead just tacking on and adding additional information like the related search method.
• Pnorway Feb 12, 2011 @ 3:06 am | delete
quite useful ideas. Thank you
• easymoneydaily Feb 10, 2011 @ 3:53 pm | delete
Thanks for a great lens. One question - I have found a good long tail keyword but the url has already been taken by someone else, which is better? not having any dashes in the url or having _? so for example is www.squidoo.com/squidooseo better than www.squidoo.com/squidoo_seo? or vice-versa?
• Greekgeek Feb 10, 2011 @ 7:25 pm | delete
As you may have seen if you googled for "Squidoo SEO," the second person who comes along on Squidoo and wants that URL may try reversing the word order of the keywords. Generally hyphens (or, if you must, underscores) are better, since search engines can't always distinguish the boundaries between words without separators. It might not realize that "SEO" is at the end of squidooseo, for example.

Be careful about picking exactly the same keywords as another lens. You can do it -- I've done it, reversing the order of the words -- but if the other lens is already well-optimized or has many links pointing to it, you're basically handicapping yourself like a golfer starting 30 feet behind the tee box.

Sometimes it's worth it for a good phrase, or if you're sure you can beat the existing page with your great content and fabulous SEO skills. But in some cases, search engines only feature a few pages per domain on each search query, and the rest are hidden behind a "more results from this domain" link which few people bother to click.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
• easymoneydaily Feb 11, 2011 @ 6:43 am | delete

Great overview of SEO!

Search ranking algorithms evolve and search engine optimization must follow. I am advocating a simple white hat SEO trick: quality, unique content. With every algorithm change it shows its strength.

• AshAffiches Jan 29, 2011 @ 4:46 am | delete
Great lens. Maybe someone can answer if Squidoo lenses still rank well in google as i don't see them appear in the serps as often as before. thanks
• Greekgeek Jan 29, 2011 @ 4:58 am | delete
I don't know if anyone's done a large-scale test over the last few years, covering thousands of lenses, to measure in any meaningful way how Squidoo is doing overall.

All I know is that I continue to be able to get my lenses onto page one of the SERPs, and that search engine traffic to my lenses is, in general, better than it used to be. Others in SquidU have reported the same.

It really depends on the lens, the competitiveness of the topic, and your own skill at SEO.

I'm hoping traffic will continue to improve in 2011, since Squidoo has now completely reorganized its main directory, using the subcategories breadcrumbs in the top post. Google "Squidoo Categories List" for the complete scoop on why I think this is going to kick Squidoo's SEO capabilities up a notch.
• AshAffiches Jan 29, 2011 @ 5:03 am | delete
thanks for the great reply. I think i will jump on the squidoo-google seo bandwagon as well. Best of luck with your seo efforts GreekGeek :)

• wecomparebooks Dec 22, 2010 @ 5:50 am | delete
There are many blogs which are not properly search optimized but they are visited many times. How is that possible? Is this luck or there is are other reason?
• Greekgeek Dec 22, 2010 @ 11:00 am | delete
Sure! I've had tons of traffic on my old websites, as far back as '93, and I didn't learn about SEO until '07.

But I had good content. Stuff people wanted to read. And search engines aren't entirely dense; they can still find pages even if they're not well-optimized. But it's more hit or miss, just as you're less likely to find a good furniture store in a big city if you just start driving around rather than if you've used a phone book or some other method to help you find it.

Exact phrase Keyword research is important. I have seen people being put off optimising good Keyword Phrases because they have just typed in the Keyword Phrase without quotes and seen many millions of competing pages. Whereas, as you say, making an exact Keyword Phrase search could reveal only thousands of competing pages. Excellent Lens. Best regards, Steve

Target websites that will have double purpose for your niche, SEO and marketing:
1. Submit links to directories that is targeted in Seattle.
2. Search for top blogger (related to your niche) in Seattle area, and ask if they can blog about your website. They will ask for a compensation.
3. Go for reciprocal exchange to websites that can benefit your niche from their traffic - sample: real estate in Seattle, etc. Do not reciprocate to websites that has no use to your site, no matter how tempting the PR is.
This is some tips by using that you increase PR of your site.

So many people recommend blogs and even praise them to the skies that I wonder if we shouldn't just spend all of our time working on our blogs rather than even fooling around with Squidoo and EzineArticles.com...?

I recommend using Ryan Deiss' Cherry Picker(free software) and Market Samurai (free edition) for checking the competition. Cherry Picker shows a god amount of detail at a glance. You can download it here: http://newbiereport.weebly.com/download-cherry-picker.html

Don't forget yahoo site explorer to check the backlinks of your sites and your competition: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ it shows pretty accurate results!
• authenticsports Jul 28, 2010 @ 5:11 pm | delete
I use Cherry Picker and it is super easy to use for finding niche markets.

The advantages of SEO is all about demand ans supply. Good SEO agency will recommend the highest value keyword .e.g. "Home loan" will bring more value than "car loan" to finance firm therfore I will go for "home loan". also "accounting services" will bring more value than "accounting firm"This is what good SEO services is about.

Thanks for the great Squidoo SEO tips. I learned a lot from your Lens and plan to become a fan so I can continue to read what you have to say. I've found that slow and steady wins the race with SEO - plan your content around your readers (as you mentioned) and then promote it in a natural way to gain in the rankings on Google and Squidoo. Thanks for your helpful Lens! Looking forward to more.

Hi Greekgeek. Some fantastic tips and suggestions here, and I can see there are a number of listed resources i need to check out. I'm a 'newbie' when it comes to SEO, so any and all tips and tricks are appreciated.

Kim Manley Ort is teaching us some tips while we work on learning about 'niche' lenses in "Fresh Wonders" and today she recommended your "Squidoo SEO: Get Search Engine Traffic" as a resource. I'm really glad she did. I can already see how helpful it will be.

Your SEO advice is priceless. I gave it 5 stars and put it on my favorite list because I know I'll be back often. I do have one question though. You suggested we check this URL: http://www.squidoo.com/tags "your keyword". You said that search will check tag pages. I don't understand what you mean. I did this with my desired keyword and got a squidoo page with a red tag on it that says "this page was made by you". I don't understand what that's about. I guess I don't understand what tag "pages" are. Thanks.

Hi, this is really useful, although I think that I will have to come back and read it step by step as ALOT to take in! What i've digested makes sense both for working out the best way to approach my first lens and for blogging and search engines in general....was starting to get to bogged down with promoting everything im doing, instead of concentrating on good writing (hopefully!!) with keywords for search engines within my content...so thanks.

I've been looking at your series of articles - clever how you've linked them. It reminds me that all the "optimized" writing I've been seeing lately is so depressing. Now that I've worked on SEO myself, I see why it's like that, but you're right, do it too much and a robot might as well have written your copy. People should not write to please robots.

Hi, just a quick question which i hope someone may be able to answer.

Is there a technical difference in SEO for Google as Opposed to Yahoo / MSN??? Also the descriptions on Yahoo differ from Google, is there a reason for this?

I am position one on Yahoo for bookkeeper surrey but about position 16 on Google. is this down to the number of pages indexed?
