Trends in Social Networking Closing Doors or Providing Opportunity?

Open social network sites like Myspace and Facebook are now facing some potential huge competition to take their members away.  Is that trend going to cause sites like Squidoo and Hubpages to jump on the next trend of social networking by closing their doors and only allow member to view content on these platforms?

It is doubtful as the search engines are their primary source of traffic and the community atmosphere that exist within these cultures encourages people to create content to earn money for themselves, charities (a squidoo exclusive) and the site operators.  If they close their doors it would destroy those business models.

Blogs and forums from their inception have had ways to keep prying eyes from their content and membersites and premium content sites are the new wave of internet marketing, Social Networking has taken notice.

The real advantage to closed networks is that it gives people the opportunity to network with like minded people and to bar entry to those without that common bond.  This gives users of these networks the opportunity to establish bonds with a presreened group of people without the fear of abuses in the system like you see rampant on myspace.

Is this then new wave and the decline of user generated content?

I believe it is safe to say Squidoo will Always Be open Door?!?

I am sure that squidoo will always be open for business and search engines with content accessible by all. Even with some of the self moderation we have in place with the "Ratings" the open door policy here will probably remain.

It would be nice to see closed door groups and lenses for member only content maybe the concept will take hold here as well lest membership decline and go behind closed doors.

Squidoo closing up its doors . . . can't see it happening myself. But who knows what lies around the corner these days! Great lens, 5 stars.

I do not see Squidoo closing, if times get tough they can lower the royalty payouts to each lens master till things become stable again. Also with the increased number of options Squidwho the the Ever project for example Squidoo is spreading the risk out among various biz models.

Yes I agree with both that Squidoo is designed to be an open door neighborhood with every one contributing to the community.

IMO Squidoo's primary purpose is content generation with networking as a secondary benefit, albeit a huge component.

Paul, I just want to congratulate you on your 5 kids!! Wow! I've always admired people with "hundreds" of kids.
By the way, I agree with "lizthefair" comments.

As popular sites are closing in on their users, or becoming pay sites, my experiences are, there are always new sites starting, for free and open to all.

Squidoo er believe may never become closed. I can not see, how it can survive if doors close. New "blood" is needed! :-)

It depends on the purpose of your network. To me facebook and MySpace are really about catching with old friends. I know people do marketing stuff there, but for me that's at best a secondary value. Squidoo on the other hand is about getting your thoughts on a topic out there, so open is better.

I think both have their place, but the value and protection in the closed door networks will eventually trump the user bases in the huge social networking sites.
