I've always been a Squidoo somebody I suppose as I've always had an avatar, but nobody ever visited (sob!). Now people do as I participate more and truly enjoy reading and Squidliking some great lenses, just like yours. Thanks for the good advice. Should I worry about my avatar - it's a mad hare looking at the moon?!!!
  • Susan52 Apr 22, 2012 @ 6:39 pm | delete
No worries about the avatar - I think it's unique and very identifiable! Glad you're participating on Squidoo again!

I'm sort of inbetween, but I've already implemented some of the things you recommended here and will do more in the future. Thank you for this very informative lens; as a relatively new lensmaster I found it to be one of the best so far: very informative and contains a lot of practical advice I already know will come in handy. Thank you!

Is it pathetic that I still wish I could get a Giant Squid t-shirt?

I missed the original Giant 50 challenge in summer '07 because I was making lenses too slowly. I had to wait a long time before there was another. Back in the early days, the Giant program was a lot more limited than it is now, and Giants were rare.

I was so hoping I'd earn a Giant Squid t-shirt. At that time, it was an award given to only a FEW Giants who did something above and beyond the call of regular Giant-dom. Not all Giants received one. You had to do something special to earn one. I was always watching my mail and crossing my fingers. It wasn't that i wanted the T-shirt, but rather, the affirmation that I'd done something meaningful.

Of course, one doesn't need a T-shirt to know if you're a somebody. If you participate in the community and/or make great lenses and fully explore what Squidoo has to offer, you ARE a somebody!

Soon to become Somebody, I hope:-) My first encounter with Squidoo was so overwhelming that I've missed the most important little part - interaction. Now my priorities are forums, blogs and comments, basically getting to know the Squidoo community. And you know what? Now it's beginning to be so much more fun:-)
  • Susan52 Oct 25, 2010 @ 8:25 am | delete
So happy you've discovered the Squidoo community. Squidoo is so much more fun when you can share your experiences with others who "get it."
  • insolvelipe Oct 23, 2010 @ 2:31 pm | delete
What is so ironic about my affiliation with Squidoo - is that I never really participated in anything in my three years here, and it seems that during my tenure I missed a lot, but I am glad to become a part of this vibrant community. The opportunities here at Squidoo are endless, not to mention the many friends that you can meet here, I love Squidoo.

While people do like to see pictures of people writing online content there is a security issue. I never put an actual picture of myself online any more because I've been cyber-stalked twice. One of them started hanging out at a restaurant 4 blocks from my apartment. I have no idea how he figured out I lived in the area. I've become very security conscious. I never use my real name or picture for anything online.

  • Zeemer Jul 22, 2010 @ 6:43 am | delete
Hi! I find your lens very useful. I notice that you wrote a lot on the right side of your lens including the More Helpfu "How to Squidoo Lenses". My question is how do you write on that part of your lens? I've been trying to figure out how to do that but I have not been successful. Thank you
  • Susan52 Jul 22, 2010 @ 7:25 am | delete
Zeemer, On the lens workshop, on the right-hand side is a tab that says "Manage Widgets." That's where you find the content that can be added to that right column. It's limited to feeds, featured lenses, squidcasts, and Amazon modules, a total of four which you can then arrange in any order. Hope that helps!

I got an email from Kimberly today that surprised me. She let me know that I'm one of the top 10% of earners on Squidoo. Stunned?...me too! I don't know if that makes me a Squidoo Somebody or not, a Stunned Somebody is more like it. So, I guess I'll keep doing what I do.
Nice to visit this lens again and see it doing so well. That makes you a Squidoo Somebody, Susan. ~ Have a great day!

I am looking forward to becoming a Squidoo Someboy! I have committed myself to start writing a new lens once a week. I have been approaching menopause and gained 50 pounds in a year's time. Since Feburary, 2010 have have so far lost 28 pounds as of 2 weeks ago. I need to lose 15 more by June 1, (my BD)! I could use your inspiration (for both) of my goals. Look forward to chatting with many of you. I love reading many of your lenses.

TamiJackson and danmilky1, the very best place to find helpful tips and ask for critiques is on the forum at SquidU.com. Also, be sure to check out The Answer Deck at Squidoo. Remember to build relationships with other lensmasters and you'll be able to get just tons of great input. Thanks so much for visiting this lens and for your comments!

    Excellent information!
  • Mar 17, 2010 @ 9:34 am | delete
Why is this looking more and more like any other free blog service? No offense, but aside from Squidoo's weight with search engines, what's the benefit? Who has the time to promote yet another blog, page, lens, bookmark etc?
  • Susan52 Mar 17, 2010 @ 10:54 am | delete
Squidoo's weight with search engines is, in fact, an important factor. I'm sure Squidoo isn't for everyone, but many of us make this our primary base for our online businesses and make some quite decent income directly and indirectly from Squidoo. Squidoo is a great fit for me; whether it is for you is your decision. Thanks for stopping by!

    Congratulation Susan.
You have great points here, I hate when:
    1) I have to talk with a cat, a bird, of a snippet of an abstract art, instead of a person
    2) I cannot contact a person
    3) ... the bio is empty, and my favorite is
    4) ... I want to start a conversation but I have nothing to say.
    You did a great job
    Regards
    Michey

Sometimes I feel like a somebody, and at other times I feel like the Invisible Man. 5***** for a great lens.
  • poddys Feb 7, 2010 @ 1:46 pm | delete
Sometimes I think I am a Squidoo somebody, and other times I feel more like the Invisible Man, no matter how hard I try to get noticed. You just have to get the word out about your lenses, make contact with other lensmasters, and the more lenses you create, the more you will get noticed, especially if you write about lots of topics that you are passionate about.
  • foovay Feb 7, 2010 @ 1:44 pm | delete
Excellent lens, well deserving of lens of the day. I've been Squidooing for quite a while, yet I learned something and got some good ideas to polish up my own somebody-ness! Thanks!
  • Lamar Morgan Feb 7, 2010 @ 1:06 pm | delete
Here's The Secret to GTD on The Internet. It's not really about sales. It's about building relationships with other folks. And, how do you begin to build a relationship? You give...first. Think about it. What does Twitter tell you to do after you sign up? It tells you to follow someone else...first. Nothing happens until you lift up the other guy...first. Squidoo has its own university. But, who makes it work? Lensmasters - folks who care to help other people succeed at what they are attempting to accomplish. Lifting up the other guy first has its benefits. Go for it!

Susan, you are one of my favorite "Squidoo Sombodies"! Congrats on a well deserved LOTD!
  • rgasperson Feb 7, 2010 @ 12:55 pm | delete
I have to say, there are a few things on this lens I have not thought about using. One of them is to go around to several of the other lenses and leaving constructive coments. I know there are hurdreds of thousands of lenses out there, O just have not taken the time to get out there and vew many of them. I will have to make it a priority to check some of them out.

The other thing that is new to me is posting a contact me link so my readers can contact me and let me know what I might be able to add to make the lens even better.

Thank you for the intformation. I will be sure to put it to use today. Hey, I've already started. I wrote this comment didn't I?

  • d-artist Feb 7, 2010 @ 10:52 am | delete
wow congrats on LOTD great info...5* lens... I think I've followed most of the guidelines. I took off my contact cause 2 very vulgar and demeaning comments where left, so a bit scary...will have to rethink that.
Being a squid-nobody I'll try harder to be a somebody...how many can say they are the SunMaid raisin gal, a Baroness, lived a short time in a castle, had a mom who was in show business etc etc. I have much to write about...I'm suppose to write a book, but I'm not a writer, so this is a start for preservation...Squidoo has been cathartic for me. Thanks Squidoo!

Hi. Thanks for this. I haven't even launched my first Lens yet, but you have given me some great advice
  • Intuitive Jan 28, 2010 @ 7:29 am | delete
Well, I think I'm a somebody! I know lots of Squidoo somebody's. And yet, no Lens of the Day and no purple star for me yet, and I've been around and active since 2006! I've done all the things on your list and then some. It's a mystery to me. Maybe I need to spend more time on the forums rather than making lenses. 5*

Yes I am a squidoo somebody. I was just wading through. However, got some inspiration reading this lens. Thanks.
  • Raoucus Jan 24, 2010 @ 12:06 am | delete
This lens is amazing! I didn't think about how if you comment other lenses, you get traffic yourself for a good deed in giving opinions! That was ahelpful tip! Not only that, I underestimated all the information I could learn on this site! By reading other lenses, studying those subjects, and then commenting on them, I gain three things: possible new ideas for lenses, more information for my memory bank, and another place for my name on Squidoo! It's so genius!
  • lou16 Jan 20, 2010 @ 5:46 am | delete
What a great lens, I can't believe that I've only just 'found' it.
  • Carmel_Aaron Jan 18, 2010 @ 5:27 pm | delete
    Hi Susan,

    Great lens-as usual.

Yes, I have been feeling like a Squidoo Nobody,
but you have made me feel like a Squidoo Somebody.

I was already following your steps, but, your feature has
just about blown me away.--- WOW!!!

I am thrilled you like my work. That means
    a lot

    Thanks a bunch-my dear...

I think the biggest thing is changing the default text and adding photos to your lens. I talk about squidoo now on my blog, website, and am going to start printing my key lense on my business cards and promotional materials.

Wow.. lots of great tips here. Since I usually cook up my Squidoos on things that sort of inspire and interest me (and probably *boring* information for anyone else -- *grin*), my stuff is probably still making me somewhat of a Squidoo nobody. But hey, I'm working on it. Learning from the cool stuff you guys are putting up here...

Thanks Susan! I don't really like the photos of myself, and not sure about the avatars either - I like the idea of a picture of myself, but one that was take "a while ago"! I'll be looking for photos now so soon I'll no longer be a nobody myself!
