What issues with star ratings did I miss?

I like that they did away with the 5 star voting system, I don't miss it at all. Great debate.

I have often read lenses with a less-than-fve-star rating that I felt was very undeserved, but what can be done about it? Maybe there actually is someone out there who thought that particular lens stunk. Or maybe they were just being pricky. It's hard to say. Good idea for a debate, though.

Its funny you mentioned that. I have pondered the thought myself. Someone who has a lens related to yours could rate you a #1 to improve their rankings for a specific keyword you both have. Its not like you would know who did it. That is why I dont think it would work if they did rank pages by ratings. You have people that have been here from the beginning with numerous contacts and pages. A newbie would never get up in the searches. It takes time to get established. I think their search criteria is basically the same as google. Relevence, backlinks, keyword popularity and necessity. Just my opinion from experience. Doesnt mean I'm right.

I haven't gotten one star ratings on five star rates but I've gotten like a four and I think a three. Of course its the persons personal choice but still is it fair? Has jealousy been allowed to creep in when they rate? We'll never know now shall we? Thanks.

If I think a lens deserves a 1 or 2 star rating, I won't rate it - but that's just me! I don't think the system should be abolished. There are ways to get around undeserved low ratings.

Those people who say no lens should be judged negatively by its visitors must not be involved in sports, because all of sports involve rating, judging and scoring someone. One side is the winner, one side is the loser. The "anti-rating" folks must not be married, because getting married (or even going out on dates) involves rating other people. They must not be involved in business, because all of business involves judging products and competitors, and being judged. I could give a thousand other examples, but you get the point.

You didn't miss anything. I've been wondering about this ratings system. People love to say it has little effect on your lenses, But when no one or very few people are bothering to rate your lenses at all (and giving it just one star when they do), it makes a BIG difference, as far as I'm concerned.

I second what OhMe wrote. Send me a message about what I should improve, but then come back and view my lens (to see if I took your advice) and give me an appropriate star rating.

I would much rather someone contact me personally and let me know what they think I could do to improve a lens rather than stick the dreaded one star on there. Good discussion.

I've had an undeserved 1* rating on a lens, but this was quickly caught by another lensmaster who was kind enough to notice and commented on the lens about it. What the person who left the 1* obviously didn't realize was that they had just boosted its lensrank, however slightly.

Ditto lollyj - i wouldn't know if I got a 1 * rating. As well, the only vibes i ever get from Squidoo are great ones! Nothing but help and support. I get 5* ratings for my health lenses from other people who have lenses in health. These are lenses, it's great to make it to the top, make some money maybe, get our websites to the top on Google, but this is not life and death. This is in my mind, the best on line community I have ever been part of! 5* to you all!

I can't understand why anyone would spend their time giving one star ratings out of meanness.
Not sure I would even know if I got a one star rating.

What attracted me to Squidoo was the positive attitude and outlook reflected in the lenses. Anyone who feels so jealous or mean that they find it necessary to rock this very nice boat should go to one of the many sites online where negativity is championed.

I'm so sorry some of you have been singled out in such a negative way.

Wow, eelkat. Didn't know that people were abusing the one star. Ughhh.

I occasionally get lousy ratings on political lenses. It seems to go with the territory. I've deleted a few lenses because of it. By the way, I enjoyed your debate and am giving you a Squid Angel Blessing!

I got a 1* drive-by on my 5* lenses immediately after rejecting a lens submitted to my group. Fortunately, I only had 2 lenses at that time. Apparently, that person did it to a lot of people because an announcement about it came out that day.
Maybe the same one that hit you, Eelkat.

Ealkat, I hope you got those 43 one star rating turned around. That's horrible!
  • EelKat May 26, 2008 @ 2:49 am | delete
Great lens! I remember that thread on SquidU. I had posted a rant on it, because I had just gotten 43 one star rates all at one, just before that thread started, and I was really fired up about it at the time.

I'd be interested to see what others say about this issue. I wonder too, how many folks have had the same problem I've had, with people giving high rated lenses one star rates, just for the sake of doing so.
