I find that when I need to find an answer to a question or find information on a topic I can search Squidoo first rather than going to the search engines. The Squidoo lenses are usually better quality than the articles that are returned in the search engines, plus I earn points for my own Squidoo account as a browse and read Squidoo content.
  • cashstudent101 Oct 8, 2011 @ 6:30 am | delete
half the time i can't even find my own lens by using the squidoo search. That includes the lens i have a giant squid like or two.

    Just made Giant squid today.
    Have a nice day.
  • albadvert Aug 29, 2011 @ 8:42 am | delete
I have seen the ebook and it is very useful but,I have a question.
When you post to a social bookmarking site or link directory, you shouldnt post your lens anywhere else that day?Because I posted it in several of them, and I am not seeing the links among the list of my backlinks.
  • aj2008 Aug 29, 2011 @ 10:45 am | delete
I am really glad you found the ebook useful, thank you :)

Regarding the backlinks, how quickly they show up when you check depends on how often the Search Engine Spiders crawl the sites you are using, looking for backlinks.

In my experience I have also found that although I know my backlinks are there, they never show up when I check - shetoldme is one site where other people I know can see their backlinks when they check, but I am yet to see my backlinks on that site.

There's two schools of thought regarding the frequency of backlinks being established - one is to not backlink the same site too many times on the same day but what about those bkoggers who will get other sites linking to them as soon as they post a new piece of information? So getting a lot of backlinks in one day can actually be part of a natural process.

I think the answer lies somewhere between the two. Don't overdo the backlinking by doing it all in one go - or do what I do, if the sites you are using allow you to schedule your bookmarking or posts (such as your own blogs and sites like Amplify and Posterous) then schedule your posts so they are published over a few days.

I tend to do all my backlinking as soon as I can after I publish a lens - but most of it is scheduled. Then I forget about it. Providing you have good content, good keywords and the backlinks build over a period of time, then you should see your lens getting increasing traffic.

For some people this happens quickly but for others it is just a question of time.

What is especially good about the guidebook, is that the information is from several respected lensmasters, not just one giving their opinion. The lensmasters who have put the guidebook are all very knowledgeable in their expertise and are very generous in sharing their insights.

I just signed up for an account and had the page up for the paypal email address. When i clicked on the continue button it seemed to quit working, so i refreshed it and when the page came up it said something about my page needed dressed up or something. So i tried to log in, but i couldn't. What do i need to do to get back in?
  • GrowWear Jul 4, 2010 @ 8:54 pm | delete
Hi, Cathy: What account are you trying to get back into? If it's your Squidoo account, there is a link at the bottom of most pages, Feedback and Bugs. Let headquarters know of your problem signing in. Before you do, clear your browser cache and maybe the site will then accept you user name and password.
  • aj2008 Jul 5, 2010 @ 7:01 am | delete
Sorry, but without seeing the actual page, it will be very difficult to help you. You will need to submit a bug report - see the link at the bottom of the page.

What a wonderful idea! When I started writing at Squidoo, I found everything so very difficult. I was so encouraged and also aided by many lensmasters but it still took a lot of research and trial and error for me to build my first lens. My first lens should have been made into about 6 lenses (still need to do this but really don't know where to start). And, oh, the time I lost one lens by ticking all of the boxes in the right hand column .. thinking that I was .. well, I don't remember what I was thinking! Ah yes, I learned many things the hard way. So blab, blab, I really am happy that you have put this book together for all the newbies. I am sure that I will learn much from it also.
I'm off to read some of it now. Thanks again!

Hello MiMi. I need help downloading the guidebook. I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader today. But when I click on the download button above I get an error message "The Adobe Reader that is running cannot be used to view pdf files in a web browser. Try again." Then the webpages lock. Help! Thank you. ~Wendy
  • GrowWear Apr 16, 2010 @ 4:45 am | delete
    Wendy, this might help: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405461.html

Alternatively, I am thinking that if you right click the link above and "save as," that you would then have it on your computer, and Adobe will open it for you when you click on it from your desktop or wherever you would choose to save it.

Thank you so much for your interest, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you need more help.
  • WindyWinters Apr 16, 2010 @ 6:08 pm | delete
Hi, MiMi. I finally succeeded in downloading the guidebook and printing it out. I didn't want to mess trying to repair Adobe as my computer was recently fixed. Instead I clicked on "save link as" and it downloaded to Adobe. I clicked on the download and then Windows automatically repaired Adobe. It took a few minutes...but I guess that's where the problem is...Windows. I will take time over the weekend to read the guidebook. Thanks to everyone for this awesome guide. ~Wendy

It really is heartening to hear how well received this Squidoo Step by Step Guide is proving to be. Hopefully the resources within it are going to help even more people make really great lenses which add value to both the reader and to Squidoo

What a wonderful guide you have put together for anyone interested in Squidooing, or going further with their lenses! Thank you for sharing this!
  • nukemdomis Dec 20, 2009 @ 3:11 pm | delete
After seeing all these trusted Squidoo lensmasters that put this together, I'm going to just hit the print button on this 32 page learning tool without even looking at it first.

It's got to be good. Eye-opening and game changing for some while being a light review for others. Either way, thanks in advance.

Thanks for this forum? or lense? what I want to know is can the poll question be about whether or not a visitor would like info on an online business, even though the lense is about music not business and can the poll direct them to leave their email in the guestbook to receive info
or is there a widget for people to opt into with a direct question about business online that I can put on my lense that will not fall afoul of the squidoo anti spam policy?
  • aj2008 Dec 20, 2009 @ 11:38 am | delete
AJ replying on behalf of Tenfinity: putting a question on a poll that has nothing to do with the content of the lens is Spam. People will visit a lens about music because they are interested in music. If they visit and feel you have just used music as a "hook" to build a mailing list about business, they will feel cheated.

If you are trying to build a mailing list then it would be best to set up a lens that explains exactly what your line of business is and tell people you are doing exactly that. That way you will be completely open about what your are doing.

If you download the ebook and then join Professional Squids, there are members of Tenfinity who will be able to show you the best approach to take.
  • nukemdomis Dec 20, 2009 @ 4:27 pm | delete
@steelpaulo A mailing list works when the list builder targets certain people anyway.

You're better off downloading a huge 10K email account list from somewhere versus building one from scratch. The results will be the same in the end, but one takes 30 seconds.
  • Wednesday_Elf Dec 19, 2009 @ 8:13 pm | delete
Fantastic! You have just come up with EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I joined Squidoo in February, made one lens completely wrong (called it a lensography when it was really just About Me, misunderstood the URL and it doesn't even relate to my lens, plus had NO clue how to do HTML and, as far as promotion goes - have not really even gotten to that part!). I got excited when I began, then got very discouraged because I was spending hours and hours trying to find the answers to questions. My quest came to a screeching halt and I just spent my time on Squidoo reading and trying to learn all I could from well written and informative lenses! Finally, 6 months later I began again - having learned some things through reading many wonderful Squidoo Tips and How To lenses ... and a tiny bit more HTML... then joined RocketMoms and was given a place to receive some encouragement, which helped very much. Now I'm finally getting 'with it' and am all the way up to 10 published lenses, but STILL have so much to learn. Having a single reference all in one place is my dream answer. Thank you so much!

Oh wow Beth, that's great. Be sure to let us have the link when the article is published - and I assume you will be kind enough to link to the lens?

Have to say, after going through it all, I fully understand why you gave a name for Ning community - Professional Squids. You treat Squidoo as you would treat full time job - lots of time spent on creating, promoting and organizing all activities.

Wish you success with your new project! :)

Glad to see everyone's smiling faces here on this wonderful lens! Question: I wrote a blog post--why is it not showing up?
  • Dec 18, 2009 @ 3:37 pm | delete
AJ replying on behalf of Tenfinity: Kate the reason why your Blog is not showing is because the max number of blogs is four and I guess trhere's more than four blogs out there and yes, it is lovely to see so many visitors already. Thank you all for your lovely comments and your support.
