A Lensography of Sorts

I've set up this page in order to share with you my Squidoo progress through the months; my achievements, my successes, and also my future goals. My journey began in February 2008 and this is therefore my starting point.

How much do I earn from Squidoo? What have I written about so far? These are things that I shall here be sharing with you, and as the months unfold I shall speak to you my stories and my reasons for creating the pages that I do. I'm totally addicted to Squidoo and this is my Squidoo story.

A Little Bit of Background

My partner and I are writers and always looking for further arenas to showcase our talents and write about our interests. Well, I say showcase our talents; she's the talented one really and I'm merely a man with a big interest in music, football and film. If you're after an exceptional read then I'd definitely recommend checking out some of my partners articles; she's a great writer and has such a way with words. My Squidoo journey began with this woman and I am her biggest fan; she's my muse, my absolute inspiration, and I'd definitely recommend taking a read of her work.

My Partner

A great writer and a fantastic woman; this is the person I began my Squidoo mission with and the woman that I shall always love, cherish, and hold very close to my heart.

So where was I? Ah yes, my background... I've been running my music website for six years now and have for a long while been writing film reviews for various sources also. I have a huge interest in music and film but will basically write about anything; I love to write and greatly enjoy getting my thoughts down upon the page. In Janauary I left full-time employment to focus on a life of writing and being self-employed is most certainly a lot more satisfying than being employed by a big corporate giant that you have absolutely no interest in whatsoever.

So I'm a writer, always looking for new and interesting places to write, and one of the most exciting places I've found so far has been Squidoo. My partner and I found the website early in the year 2008 and in February our Squidoo journey began.

The Start of a Journey

On February 16th 2008 I joined Squidoo and created my first three lenses. My partner and I had been meaning to join for a while at this time, she had the website jotted down in a notepad, I on the other hand am nowhere near as organised and merely made a mental note. I signed up to the site first, had a little look around, started making lenses, and gave her the all clear to come join me at the super world of Squidoo. Neither of us really particularly 'got' the website at this time; we saw the dollar signs beside our lenses on the dashboard and waited for the $0.00 to tick over and show signs of some cents or dollars.

Every time a new hit came in we both took incredible pleasure in adding the new search term as a tag in the hope that others would come across our lenses. What we'd soon come to realise however was that there was a 40 tag limit and we'd therefore have to be a little more choosey with our future utilisation of tag words.

The end of February came and as well as having created three lenses on my first day of joining, I'd also created a lens about the 2008 NME Awards on the 24th of the month. I had four lenses and yet still no money was showing, we figured that it would take a while for our earnings to show up and we therefore both battled on and continued to use Squidoo. So the following is my February Squidoo achievements (and the money earned for the month which appeared of course in April).

Lenses: 4
Tier 2 Lenses: 1 ($1.53)
Tier 3 Lenses: 3 ($0.08 each)

The Month I Quit Squidoo

In March we had a little bit of early activity in the month and then our Squidooing stopped. In March we officially quit Squidoo and decided that it wasn't worth the time or effort given that no money whatsoever had yet been accumulated. Before coming to Squidoo I dabbled in HubPages a little, really didn't like the website though, and early signs seemed to suggest that Squidoo was equally as much of a waste of time.

On March 4th I created the File-sharing programs lens, and then the lens for my personal music website Alt-UK.com followed on March 8th. Squidoo activity was then officially stopped and my partner and I only appeared back very occasionally and briefly to check and see if any money had yet appeared. Throughout March neither of us saw any money and this would therefore be the last the Squidoo website saw of us (or so we thought).

So here are my Squidoo stats for March (complete with money earned which appeared on the dashboard in May)

Lenses: 6
Tier 2 Lenses: 2 ($1.42 each)
Tier 3 Lenses: 2 ($0.07 each)
Tier 4 Lenses: 2 ($0.01 each)
Money Earned Including Commission: $3.00

The Month I Officially Returned to Squidoo

In April my partner and I made a return to Squidoo. We'd quit one month before, a few dollars had persuaded us to return however and we now had reason to continue creating lenses. I'm not too sure when it was exactly that we found out we'd been paid, on April 18th I broke my Squidoo hiatus however and created a new lens about the American pop punk band Panic at the Disco. Why did I choose this as my subject of choice for my return? Well, Panic at the Disco had recently released their second studio album 'Pretty Odd' and I wanted to vent my hatred on the Squidoo platform. I loved the bands first album, the second was terrible however and I felt it necessary to create a lens to share some information about the band, inform the Squidoo world of my love for the bands first album, and also to tell everyone just how awful the second is.

The second lens of the month came right at the end. I created a lens about 'Making Money From Writing' on the 30th of the month and felt it fit to share my story of how it is possible to make a living purely from writing. I'm passionate about my writing, and despite the fact that every man and his dog has written an article on the subject at some point or another; I wanted to have my say and took the time to create the lens.

So it was April that we officially returned to the website, activity was somewhat limited during this month and we still weren't entirely clued up on the whole Squidoo process; we were getting there though and starting to make our mark upon the website. We'd had our first payout of royalties and were eager to learn more and gain further knowledge about the website and the way it worked. The following is my lens details for the month of April (and of course the royalty payments which were paid out in June):

Lenses: 8
Tier 1 Lenses: 2 ($7.38 each)
Tier 2 Lenses: 2 ($1.25 each)
Tier 3 Lenses: 4 ($0.07 each)
Money Earned Including Commission: $18.53

The Most Exciting Month of my Squidoo Career Thus Far

When we went into the month of May we'd read Loyalis lens about 'Squidconomy - The Economics of Squidoo' and now understood more about the payout structure here at Squidoo. This was to be our first full month on the website and we were now reasonably clued up about what we were doing and strived for our lenses to be the best they possibly could be and in the most excellent lensrank positions they could be too. We were striving for Squidoo success and felt that we had a reasonable idea about how further goals could be achieved.

I created four lenses in the Month of May between the days of May 14th and May 25th. First of all ,y Helium portfolio was created to showcase my writing that can be found upon the Helium website. I'm proud of my work and felt that creating a lens was a good way to showcase my writing and display my work neatly. I've always loved Drum & Bass music and my second project of the month was therefore Drum & Bass related, I then finally came through with an MC Lars double effort in the form of my MC Lars lens and my Hearts That Hate lens also. Having created these two lenses I went off to the official MC Lars forum to share my work with others where MC Lars himself replied to my post and thanked me for my efforts. It was great having MC Lars thank me on his forum and filled me with absolute pride that I had created these two lenses and that MC Lars had appreciated it and liked my work; it made it all the more worthwhile.

My Squidoo work for May was concentrated over the course of just eleven days, the rest of the month was spent tweaking other lenses of mine and trying to make sure that all my lenses were completed to the best of my ability. I take pride in my Squidoo lenses and always I'm looking to improve upon them, tweaks and changes are currently a large part of my Squidoo life as is reading up more about the website and seeking to find out further information about how I can best promote and maintain my lenses.

May was the most rewarding month of my Squidoo life, and when payment came in early July I was pleased to see that it was by far my most lucrative month also. I earned nearly double what I did the month before and for the first time ever had three lenses in the top tier; a great month for me and one which still remains to be my best. Here are my May statistics:

Lenses: 13
Tier 1 Lenses: 3 ($8.09 each)
Tier 2 Lenses: 7 ($1.38 each)
Tier 3 Lenses: 3 ($0.07 each)
Money Earned Including Commission: $34.74

Month End Disaster

Productivity throughout the month of June was halted considerably by the fact that Euro 2008 was being shown on TV. I watched each and every game and finding time to concentrate on Squidoo was therefore incredibly difficult. I loaded up my little TV and watched the Euro 2008 goals flow (I wasn't allowed to watch it on the big screen; my partner is not much of a football fan!) I did manage to create three lenses early on in the month though and one of which I am really rather proud of.

Pop Punk has always been one of my favourite genres (note: not to be confused with straight up punk rock, pop punk is far more commercial and clean in its sound), I therefore felt knowledgeable enough to create a lens about the Top Ten Pop Punk Bands of All Time and spent a lot of hours choosing my list and creating the lens. The actual writing of the lens took a lot out of me, and with so much to say and so many ideas in my mind it took many hours to complete. It was all worth the effort though and the lens then went on to spend much of the month in the top 2000 on Squidoo so I was very pleased (it dropped out right at the very end of the month, but that's another story).

At the beginning of June I was in for quite a surprise in that I received an e-mail telling me that someone was transferring to me a Grand Theft Auto 4 lens. I didn't really understand why, I thought it was some sort of wind-up and couldn't work out what was going on. The LensRank of the lens was excellent and the lens also had a Google PageRank of 3; my partner had bought the lens for me as a present as she knows how excited Google PageRank makes me and also understands how much I love the Grand Theft Auto series of games. It was one of those rare occasions where I'd actually got up before she had, I was happily checking my e-mails and came to the discovery that she'd bought me the lens. I went running into the bedroom and gave her a big kiss and a cuddle, I was incredibly excited and so pleased that I now had a nice shiny new lens. I was ecstatic that she'd bought me the lens and every time I look at my dashboard and see the Grand Theft Auto 4 lens sitting there it still brings a massive smile to my face. I love my partner and her kind gesture made me so incredibly happy; the transfer came just before pay-day as well and I happily collected $8.36 from the lens for its April activity. She knows how much I love Grand Theft Auto and this truly is the best and most thoughtful gift I've ever received in my life.

At the end of June I had sixteen lenses and with the strength of my lenses in June I looked set to repeat my May success with another $30+ payout. At the end of the month two of my top tier lenses fell out of the top 2000 however despite having spent much of the month in and around the top 1000 let alone the top 2000; I was so disappointed, there wasn't much I could do about it though and at least the one that had remained in the top tier was the most important one of the lot. These are my statistics for the month of June:

Lenses: 16
Tier 1 Lenses: 1 ($7.62)
Tier 2 Lenses: 7 ($1.29 each)
Tier 3 Lenses: 8 ($0.07 each)
Money Earned Including Commission: $17.23

Lenses Created in June 2008

Technically the Grand Theft Auto 4 lens was created May 2007 and therefore pre-dates my Squidoo history by 9 months, it was in June 2008 that the lens was bought for me though and that's why it falls within my category of lenses for the month of June.

A Relatively Lazy July

Having not been too busy on Squidoo in the month of June I therefore found it difficult to start lens creating again going into the month of July. I lacked inspiation in July and I therefore did not start making any lenses until the 23rd of the month when I made one for the Amy Heckerling directed Michelle Pfeiffer film 'I Could Never Be Your Woman'. I'd recently reviewed it for my film website World of Film and had plenty to say about the movie; and whilst busy with World of Film I then saw it fit to create a lens about my movies website as the second of my month. The second lens went live on July 28th and I really am proud of that lens due to the fact of it being dedicated to my film news/reviews website.

Two lenses for July meant that July was my slowest Squidoo month since my partner and I officially quit the website in March. Although it was a slow month I'm still very glad that one of the lenses I did create is the one for my film website, a lot of hours have been spent on my behalf writing reviews about films and it must be said that horror is my main area of interest when it comes to movies, I also have a love for a good comedy however and that's why I appreciated 'I Could Never Be Your Woman' enough to make a lens about it; it's just good innocent fun and is hugely comical also which always is good to find with a romantic comedy film of this sort; all too often romantic comedy films fail to impress I find.

By the end of July I had amounted eighteen lenses in total, July's lenses were created too late on in the month to qualify for a payout however and the pay rate for July is therefore on the basis of sixteen lenses rather than the full eighteen. July saw the mark of my second highest payout so far; I didn't have too many lenses doing particularly well for the month, as the Tier 1 payout here at Squidoo was higher than ever before and I had two lenses in the top tier though this therefore helped me out. The following is what I earned from my lenses for the month of July:

Lenses: 16
Tier 1 Lenses: 2 ($11.04 each)
Tier 2 Lenses: 3 ($1.72 each)
Tier 3 Lenses: 11 ($0.08 each)
Money Earned Including Commission: $28.62

Summertime Squidoo

Not that you'd know it right now but in this lovely land that they call the UK it's currently meant to be Summer. The August rays are supposed to be shining and it should be possible to surf out in the Sussex sea in the sun. Instead though; windsurfing is what's being done and the amount of sunshine has so far been severely limited. I'm easily burnt though and for me it's probably a good thing that the Summer isn't particularly shiny, I do however miss going a golden brown colour; such is life.

The 5th day of the month marked the start of my August Squidoo lens activities. A lens was created focusing on slasher movie killers through the ages and I progressed from there with a lens about Cabin Fever; one of my favourite horror films of all time. For the first time I broke away from the standard Squidoo mould and utilised one of the sister websites in the form of SquidFlix. I have to say that I really like the layout and will definitely be utilising further Squidoo sister sites in the not too distant future.

After starting the month in a bit of a horror frenzy my third lens of August took a lighter tone and focused this time around on the lyrics to the track 'Steve McQueen' by The Automatic. Having looked online I found that all the lyrics websites out there had got the lyrics to the track wrong and the lens was therefore created as a means of putting out there the correct display of the lyrics in the hope that a few people might come to my lens with the right lyrics, rather than the countless lyrics websites out there that have got one of the verses completely wrong.

So at the beginning of August I established that horror movies are a big interest of mine, but what about football? I love that too and so far had not created a single football related lens whatsoever. Enter my lens about Oxford United's 2008/09 season and also my lens about the upcoming Sports Interactive game that is Football Manager 2009. Every year I buy the latest Football Manager game and Oxford United has always been my team of choice; these seemed like two logical lenses to create and so my Squidoo footballing showcase was started. Expect more to come in the not too distant future!

After establishing myself as a football writer though I then went back to revisit my horror interest and created a lens about the Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed movie '28 Weeks Later'. If you like your zombie horror then you should absolutely love this one. Once more I utilised the Squidflix sister site in creating this lens and probably shall use it again before the months out too! That's not the only sister site I've now utilised though; with my Dawn of the Dead lens I took a trip to the Hey Monkeybrain arena and got my debate up and running as to which film is better; the original George A. Romero Dawn, or the Zack Snyder directed 2004 adaptation. My personal favourite is actually the original, if you've got a viewpoint on the topic however then I'd love to hear from you on the lens!

For my final lens of the month of August I then concentrated on the Matthew Perry feature that is 'Numb'. The film is directed by Harris Goldberg and it's a biographical piece which looks into the issue of his struggle with depersonalization disorder. It's a very fun and light-hearted film, and Matt Perry does here play a part very different to that of Chandler. It's a great film and if you like your romantic comedies then definitely give the film a go. I created this lens as the film just really grabbed me, it came across as very real but also very funny; from start to finish the feature had me completely gripped and I just can't speak highly enough of the fantastic film that is 'Numb'. So there you go; that was my last lens of August and I'm very proud of the way it turned out too.

The August payments were revealed and paid out to lensmasters on October 6th 2008. August marked my highest earning Squidoo month thus far and I can reveal that the following were my payout figures for August:

Lenses: 26
Tier 1 Lenses: 1 ($10.97 each)
Tier 2 Lenses: 7 ($1.81 each)
Tier 3 Lenses: 18 ($0.08 each)
Money Earned Including Commission: $51.02

Sunny September

Coming into sunny September, my first big excitement of the month was the news of Dimitar Berbatov signing for Manchester United. I'm an Oxford United fan at heart, when I was younger I did however have a glory hunting love for Manchester United also and still very much follow the teams progress. I love to see Manchester United do well and watching them lift the Champions League trophy last year as well as winning the English Premier League was absolutely excellent to see. So Dimitar Berbatov is now officially a Manchester United man having transferred from Tottenham Hotspur for £30.75 million and I have to say that I'm overjoyed with this news. I'm a big Berbatov fan and for my first lens of September chose to create one dedicated to the big Bulgarian. May he spend many happy years at Man United!

For my second lens of the month I then chose to write about something completely different to anything I had ever done before here at Squidoo. In the past I've studied and enjoyed the subject of Sociology, I therefore decided to create a Sociology related lens and came up with 'What Sociologists Say About Globalisation'. I've always found globalisation to be a fascinating subject; it was therefore with great pleasure that I took the time to construct the lens and have to say that I'm very pleased with the end result. Included with this lens are nine sociologist arguments about globalisation which from between the years of 1987 and 1997. Some varying different opinions about globalisation have here been provided, and if you're interested in the subject then I've also listed a number of books about globalisation here which may well appeal.

On September 6th 2008 I then for the first time achieved something really quite special and exciting here at Squidoo; I hit the number one spot for the Video Games topic with my Football Manager 2009 lens. I'd never had a lens at number one for its topic before, I'd hovered in and around the Top 10 but never hit the prestigious top spot; that all changed on September 6th however and a very proud day it was for me too! I couldn't quite believe what I'd managed, the lens that was second for the category was just one lensrank behind as well; my top of topic spot was achieved by the narrowest of margins and this actually made it all the more exciting and pleasing to see.

Still buzzing off of the back of my top of topic success, my next lens would once more be football related and I concentrated on finishing off a lens that had now been a Work in Progress since September 1st. The lens I'm talking about here is my Blue Square Premier League 2008/09 Season lens; a lens which includes a small write up about each of the 24 teams in the Blue Square Premier League, a league table which is kept updated every time a game is played, and also a list of the top give goalscorers in the league. I've put a lot of hours into this lens and when I finally completed it on September 9th I felt an absolutely fantastic sense of satisfaction. The lens may have taken over a week to complete, it was well worth the hours however and as a huge fan of Blue Square Premier League football I'm extremely pleased to have made this one. Oxford United is in the league at current and that's why I have such an active passionate interest in the English Blue Square Premier League; Oxford United will always be my team and I follow them through thick and thin; through the good times and also through the bad times. Hopefully this season will see Oxford United promoted back to their rightful place within the football league; I remain optimistic.

After focusing on football related issues twice running, I then decided to go for something completely different and so my 'SquidWoo!: The Ultimate in Squidoo Satisfaction' lens came about. It was good fun creating this one, the idea sprung into my mind late one evening and immediately I got to work in creating the lens. I probably should have been sleeping, instead I was creating a new lens however and I'm very glad I did so too. It's a very light-hearted lens, one that I much enjoyed creating and it now sits proudly as a part of my personal Squidoo collection.

Up next was a musical trio as I wrote about the three bands of You Me At Six, Kasabian, and Less Than Jake; all very different, but also all very good. I've always had a massive interest in music and creating music lenses is therefore always an exciting and highly rewarding thing for me to do. I love writing about music, I find that my words flow most naturally when talking about music and this was most definitely the case here. With three music lenses created I would then turn my attention back to football and create a lens on the subject of 'Match of the Day'; a Saturday night football highlights show here in the UK. Again this was a fun lens to create and once more I thoroughly enjoyed it. With a brochure I requested now having arrived in the post; my next project would be to write about the Jake West directed comedy horror film 'Doghouse'.

I'd read online that the Carnaby International Group were looking to secure investment for their 'Doghouse' comedy horror film; as a big fan of British horror I instantly wanted to know more and very happily requested a brochure. The brochure certainly didn't disappointed, and as I watched the movie trailer that accompanied it I felt incredibly inspired to write. I had now created five lenses in just four days; a new record for me and one which put me very much back on track for reaching Giant Squid status by September 30th. Needless to say I was very happy with my progress, at one stage I'd decided I'd probably not make it; the race was now well and truly back on however and I now only need to create 13 more lenses in the space of 11 days; things were looking very good for me and I now had full faith that Giant Squid status could soon be reached.

Once more turning my attentions back to football I now decided to write about the legend that is Eric Cantona; I was always a huge fan of the man during his playing days and it therefore felt an obvious choice of lens. I love football, my interest in movies/TV is so strong however that with my next 6 lenses I'd then go back to this as my subject of choice. The American Pie Movies were written about and a lens was also created about the teen comedy classic that is Porky's. I love teen comedy movies, I also love top quality British sitcoms however and so also decided to write about Peep Show and Spaced. I love these two sitcoms and along with Green Wing consider them amongst my absolute favourite sitcoms of all time. Channel 4 has come out with some amazing comedy shows over the years and you sure won't find much finer than these three. With the other two movie lenses I concentrated on the second Michael Bay Transformers movie and also the great British actor that is Danny Dyer; after creating these six similarly themed lenses though I then decided it was probably time to move on to something else. There were still 7 lenses to be created and to be quite honest I just didn't know where my focus would head next.

It was at this point that I was handed with the prestigious honour that is Squidoo's Lens of the Day; I never thought I'd be awarded the LOTD, I was though and what an excellent feeling it provided me with too. I was so pleased and proud to have been gifted the honour of Lens of the Day, my Football Manager 2009 feature was the lucky chosen lens and was awarded LOTD on September 26th 2008. So with seven lenses still to create my inspiration had been provided and I now had an absolute wish to write about music.

Two record labels and four bands were now written about, this took me up to 49 lenses and around 26 hours were left in order for the final lens to be written to reach 50. Eden Log was the chosen subject for my 50th lens; it's a French science fiction film from first time director Franck Vestiel, a fine feature film and one which I thoroughly enjoyed watching. I'm not generally a fan of science fiction, in most instances I hate it in fact; I love Eden Log though and there's just something about the visual beauty of it all which made it really appeal to me. I'd been meaning to write about Eden Log for a while, ultimately it was my 50th lens though and the one with which I reached the massive milestone of the big 5-0. Having been awake and frantically writing for many an hour I now decided to sleep; I'd reached my 50 target and sent in my Giant Squid application, exhausted and ready to drop I now decided to head for bed and thought that my September lens creation was now over. Little did I know that there was still more to come.

When I awoke I once more found myself wanting to write, I'd reached 50 lenses and was very happy with what I'd achieved at Squidoo thus far, I wanted to make even more lenses though and by the end of September 30th I actually had 52 lenses; not bad given that I only had 27 before the month began. September was by far my most constructive month at Squidoo, nearly doubling my number of lenses I was pleased to have had such a busy month and now intend to make every month just as busy as this one.

The Month I Became A Giant Squid

Fear not about the title for this section for I'm still a human being at heart, on the Squidoo platform however I'm happy to announce that in the early hours of October 7th (UK time) I was accepted into the Giant Squid program here at Squidoo. I was very happy to hear the news I'd been accepted, I spent all day on the 6th anxious as to whether or not my application would be successful, and just when I was contemplating heading for bed I found out this fantastic news that I was now a Giant Squid (click the link to find out more about the Giant Squids and how you could become one too).

So what have I been doing so far in October then? Well, I've decided to concentrate on music for starters. I created two lenses toward the end of September about the record labels of Fueled By Ramen and Decaydance, and now intend to write about each and every artist that is currently signed to the two labels. I've done a pretty good job so far and there aren't many left to go now, that's been my main area of interest for October thus far and as well as creating a number of different pages for Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance bands I've also written about the UK indie rock/pop punk band that is The Wombats. The Wombats is a band currently signed to 14th Floor Records and if you wish to find out more about The Wombats then please feel free to check out the page that I've created.

My next plan for October is to finish off creating the Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen band pages, after that though; who knows what my next Squidoo projects may be. I have a couple of lenses in the making at the moment, the band pages will be created first and foremost though and only then shall I reveal as to where my Squidoo future is heading. You can rest assured though that over the coming weeks and months I shall be writing a lot more about music, and a lot more about movies too; these have always been my main page priorities here at Squidoo and I'm sure that things shall remain this way for the foreseeable future too.

I like the way you put your Squidoo Journey, it's stops and starts, highpoints & frustrations too, all together. Gives a Newbie hope she can create more than just one lens :-). Keep up the great work. 5*.
