Sources and Volume of Squidoo Traffic

This lens is designed to help Squidoo Lensmasters better understand how much traffic Squidoo.com gets and how that traffic is obtained.

The primary sources for Internet traffic are Alexa, comScore, Hitwise and Nielsen Online and this lens reports on publicly available data from those sources. Only Compete and Alexa regularly release any of their data publicly. Hitwise and Nielson are both paid (and expensive) services - occasionally data is made available in press releases or report summaries.

Each source uses a different methodology. The trends reported by each should match - for example the increases or decreases in traffic should be reported by all these sites - but the specific numbers will vary widely due to the varying methodology.

All statistics on Internet traffic should be treated as estimates and trends - not as gospel.

How Does Compete Collect It's Data

Compete's clickstream data are collected from a 2,000,000 member panel of US Internet users (about a 1% sample), using diverse sources. Using a rigorous statistical normalization methodology, Compete creates precise projections of the behavior of the entire US Internet browser population on monthly and weekly basis. In addition, Compete provides daily estimates of share of consumer attention garnered by the top Internet sites and the velocity of change of this attention.

  • Compete reports US data only. Since Squidoo has international visitors, compete will always underestimate the total traffic. Data from Alexa.com indicates that the US accounts for only 50% of Squidoo traffic.
  • Compete does not report on individual Squidoo lenses. You can not use Compete to track the visitors to your lenses.
  • Compete can not report about a specific person's internet behavior - personally identifiable data is scrubbed before Compete will accept/use the data for analysis.
  • Compete has the largest active panel of US Internet users. Its 2,000,000 members represent approximately 1% of the US Internet browser population. Their data exceeds all standards for sampling size.

Alexa shows the data as pageviews as a percent of overall Internet traffic. This view highlights some of the daily swings in traffic to Squidoo.

How does Alexa Collect Data

Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources. The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service. Because of the reliance on the Alexa Toolbar data, the Alexa data is generally thought to be less accurate than Compete, Hitwise, Nielson.

THIS IS OLD DATA - note the 2007 dates.

I am including this to highlight how changes in the algorithms at Google and Yahoo can and will impact Squidoo.
