What Was Your Squidoo Aha Moment?

From the lens 10 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Squidoo.

Very educating lens! Your tips are useful indeed, and it shows:)

I've been trying for quality lenses, so this lens is encouraging, and pushes me to keep striving. I'm still waiting for that aha moment.

You have some great tips here, and thanks for the encouragement to keep going.
  • jays23 Oct 12, 2011 @ 2:13 am | delete
I love your lens, and Im not being cliche about it just to get a visit as you said. Squidoo gives a good platform where we can be creative. Like you, Im still being a rank addict. Im still in this dismal state wondering where and how I could let my lens be known. But after reading your lens, that squidoo was not built in a day, I realized, I should just enjoy creating a lens and not worry about traffic and ranking. If my lenses are not getting noticed yet maybe I have not produced a quality lens yet, that means, I should focus on that before anything else! Thanks for your advice!

My aha moment was when I received my first payout, set at $20. I had stopped making lenses because I was frustrated by slow progress. After that $20 barrier, I realized how much more potential this could offer if I only did what I already loved doing: making more lenses!

    Blessed by an angel.
  • Tolovaj Jun 14, 2011 @ 8:27 am | delete
Thanks for sharing information. I realized coupple of months ago I too much focus on my lenses and not enough on readers. Squidoo is about sharing and it takes at least too for that, right? My other problem is language. English is not my first language, so I started withlenses written in Slovene. Now half of my lenses are in Slovene and English- guess what? Traffic is rising:)

Very helpful hints -- no Squidoo aha yet -- I'm looking more closely at eBay now, so this was just what I needed to read -- maybe more like haha because it's fun -- here's an out-of-neighborhood SquidAngel blessing, too!
  • Luminosity Dec 22, 2010 @ 1:19 pm | delete
I keep on playing and having fun.
I suppose that is the most important thing to me.
If I can't have fun I will do something else that I will have fun with.

When I first started, I was afraid I could not write and was intimidated by others. But, once I started visiting, seeing what others were doing and tried creating a few lenses myself....I was hooked. We all have something to share.

I am pretty new here so I am might still be waiting my aha moment but I do remember feeling pretty excited when I got my first comment - it proved a real person and read my writing! That was when I decided to write more. I need to learn to focus and finish one thing at a time I think. I have about 20 WIP lol

My aha moment was when I learned that if my lenses are good enough for traffic at the time I built them, with less knowledge, then tweaking them and learning more about Squidooing could do nothing but help. Still working on the time management issue. By far, my biggest problem.
  • Kitsune64 Sep 12, 2010 @ 7:39 pm | delete
You have managed to be informational, honest, and inspirational, all at the same time - no small feat! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this lens; it will definitely be added to my favorites.

My Squidoo Aha moment was looking at one of my very first lenses... and realizing there was so much more I could do. I'm now in the process of revamping that lens, with a few more on the ol' To Do List.

I'm not sure when I had my Squidoo Aha Moment - I probably missed it because I was too busy multi-tasking! But somewhere along the line I have become an addict. This lens is very helpful with a lot of great ideas presented in a very well-organized way.
  • Jewelsofawe Mar 17, 2010 @ 12:49 am | delete
Great tips and I love how you presented them here! Blessed by an angel!
  • lisadh Mar 14, 2010 @ 12:34 pm | delete
Good tips. I particularly like #8. I think too many people try to promote things that they think will make them a lot of money, even if they're garbage.
  • Alfiesgirl Feb 16, 2010 @ 2:35 pm | delete
I have been here on squidoo for quite some time now and only very recently felt as though i am beginning to "fit in" with the run of things. I agree totally with everything you've said and was nodding my head in agreement with you whilst i read through your 10 things. Keywords seem to be a major hang-up for me which i really must get soon, i know that some of my lenses are really good but these are the 1's which have had very little if any traffic and im sure its because i havent got a clue what a tag is. 5*
  • partybuzz Feb 15, 2010 @ 9:40 am | delete
This lens is very helpful. Many of the points you make also apply to making your own website. But, of course, squidoo pages are actually mini-websites. :-)
  • Sylvestermouse Feb 13, 2010 @ 4:16 pm | delete
Wow! Such excellent advice and from a mouse too:) I guess I can not really be considered a newbie anymore, but I am definitely still learning. I always appreciate tips from the experienced lensmasters. Angel Blessed and added to my Squid Angel Mouse Tracks lens.

I agree with all of your points - and some were definitely things I needed to be reminded about (even though I can't use the excuse of being new any more!). :) This is one of the most helpful How-to-Squidoo lenses I have seen. Adding to favourites and I'm sure I will return the next time I need a dose of common sense served up with a smile!

Wishing you a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2010. And thank you for the angel blessing you so kindly left me recently.
  • crosscreations Dec 19, 2009 @ 11:24 am | delete
Always learning new things here, one of them was how to best used key words...which I once chose mostly at random - a big mistake. Not a newbie at 50 lenses now, but still learning all the time. Great content here. 5*s!

10 things I am now glad i know about Squidoo!

Squidoo aha moment so far- finding SquidU, so helpful
  • patbham Dec 9, 2009 @ 9:20 pm | delete
Very helpful Lens. I am a newbie and really wrote just to write. The Key Word thing, is much clearer for me now and I used some Internet Tools that are a big help. I have only written five Lens so far, so I have a long way to go to get the Giant Squid. I do enjoy the Squidoo site.
    Nice job very very helpful.

  • puzzlemaker Dec 3, 2009 @ 5:27 pm | delete
My aha moment was realizing there are 2 types of visitors: some who are looking to buy when they arrive and some are just looking for information. Thanks for all of your help.
  • janices7 Nov 29, 2009 @ 11:28 am | delete
Great lens! You have selected your top 10 list very well. Personally, I would also recommend that newbies spend some time on SquidU if possible. As you said, Squidoo is a social animal and squidu is a good way to get to know people (and vice versa). 5*

P.S. Thanks for blessing my Claude Monet in Giverny lens:)
  • SuperZoe Nov 21, 2009 @ 5:51 pm | delete

Oh my! May I say that I had so many "aha" moments that I really should write a book -- I'm talking Squidoo too. Lots of great points you make!!!
  • vallain Oct 29, 2009 @ 6:17 pm | delete
You mean that you can actually make money here?? I'm an eHow writer and that really works for me, but I like the creativity and versatility of Squidoo, so I've created 11 lenses. Maybe I need to promote them a little more.
  • Webcodes Oct 28, 2009 @ 10:40 pm | delete
This is great, I agree with all you say here. Great introduction to squidoo for a newbie. I would just like to add also to not copy and paste from the web but to write well written original stuff and it will pay off. 5*.
  • kiwisoutback Oct 28, 2009 @ 4:19 pm | delete
#10 is some great advice. Time management is of huge importance when working online, and for yourself. You have to be a lot more disciplined with your time, and how you allocate it for certain projects, and for real life. Distractions will cause a lot of lost time, I agree with you there.
  • a_willow Oct 26, 2009 @ 5:38 pm | delete

Thank you for this lens. You describe exactly how I felt when I created my first lens in May 2007. I don't remember who recommended Squidoo or where I found mention of it... I don't remember why anyone mentioned it, either. But because I'm a writer, an editor, a teacher, a photographer... and either a lonely work-at-home editorial entrepreneur or a lonely cubicle dweller (and since Squidoo is a *social place*), I love visiting with other lensmasters. Time management? I'm working on that, too! Maybe for my *next* 200 lenses!
  • angelsmummy Oct 22, 2009 @ 6:55 am | delete
I have just found this through Rocketmoms and this is a fantastic lens! I only have 3 lenses. Im still not 100% happy with them all but I keep changing adding bits here and there. Im sure I will get there soon!
  • Wednesday_Elf Oct 20, 2009 @ 12:04 pm | delete
I'm pretty new to Squidoo as far as creating lenses, so haven't had much time to have that "aha" moment yet, but I believe reading Squidoo Tips lenses has been the best help of all and this one is great! Thank you.
  • mmkellis Oct 19, 2009 @ 3:17 pm | delete
Alison, one of my favorite lenses on the topic of Squidoo. The time management issue seems to resonate with many people here. I am no exception. Concentrating on one lens at a time is hard because as I am working on one, I get an idea for another. I'm glad to have the Rocket Mom mentors to help keep me accountable.
  • JoyfulPamela Oct 19, 2009 @ 3:49 am | delete
Hello Alison ~ Wow, so much to think about and try. I feel like a tiny sponge right now trying to soak up an ocean of water at Squidoo. I really enjoy writing lenses and want to improve them. Your information here will be a great help to me. Thank you so much!
    Pamela :)

Thanks for posting some great tips for a Newbie Giant all in one -:) It was interesting to hear that you chose being a work at home mom over being a lawyer. Something similar happened to me and social working, so I can relate. I'm looking forward to reading more of your lenses -:) With love, Darcie

Now this was a wonderful, really mind jogging lens. It made me realize that having 20 tabs open on my browser and checking email every 15 secs wasn't helping my productivity anywhere. Thank you! I've always wanted to say this to you ~ Very Happily Blessed by a Squid Angel ~!
  • whitemoss Sep 18, 2009 @ 11:30 am | delete
This all makes such good sense. I'll try to followi it! Off now to read up on keywords- thanks!
  • KathyMcGraw Sep 13, 2009 @ 5:00 pm | delete
I read this with a smile and a chuckle....the smile is because I made the commitment to work towards Giant, and give back as much as I take, and the chuckle was knowing the thoughts of not giving up, researching competition, and shutting off the phone (which other Real Estate agents cringe at doing).......

Thanks for sharing these tips, no matter how long we've been on here it's good to remind ourselves :)
  • lakern26 Sep 1, 2009 @ 10:41 pm | delete
I really enjoyed your lens. You've made a lot of good points, a few of which I'm struggling with at the moment. You're so right . . . one look at the search results for a particular niche can be so overwhelming and disheartening that it's hard not to become intimidated. You wonder how you can write about something you love and still have it be unique enough to be appealing. You've given me hope, though. Thanks!
  • BarbRad Aug 5, 2009 @ 5:43 pm | delete
Very helpful. I'm starting my fifth month on Squidoo and I have 14 lenses published and I'm working on a fifth. I have so many ideas buzzing in my head for others that I suppose I'll never have time to get them all done. I can usually find plenty of original content because being over 65 has given me a lot of life experiences to draw on. I have to keep reminding myself that Squidoo is not my first priority when I'm running an entirely separate business, since I was addicted after the first two weeks. Life kept throwing new experiences at me, and each one became a lens. Thanks for offering all this help to newbies and even those of us who have been here for a few months. I'm not sure when one stops being a fresh squid.

Very helpful lens! I'm a new tiny little squid here too, and you're right, it feels a little intimidating to be a little baby squid in here. But thanks to your lens, somehow I feel better and inspired and optimistic that someday, I'll get there....hopefully. :-)

Great lens. I feel so excited to be here but scared at the same time. Reading whatever I can to learn how I can improve my lenses and then focus on the content. I made my 1-st step and am greatful there are people like you sharing your experience and knowledge.
    Thank you so much.

Reading your lens this morning has calmed me down immensely! In the first paragraph or two, you described me! I am a newly stay at home Mom and really want this to work for my family as I am needed here. I have enjoyed Squidoo from the beginning, however have not been successful in any area. Your tips are great!
I have never been a blogger, except joining Face Book a few months ago because all of my girlfriends from High School are starting to find it a fun place to visit. I am ignorant to a lot of the terminology regarding Blogging and linking on my lens or the other sites so many use. I am so afraid of making a mistake I am losing my MOJO so to speak. A multi tasker myself, I found that information crucial because I was trying to read everything from SquidU, visiting every how to lens out here and not building. Thanks for your efforts in helping a "newbie" who feels like a squid out of water!

WOW! I had stopped by a while ago and bookmarked Squidoo for a future project. Having eschewed all forms of social media until very recently, I had a lot to catch up on. I'm so happy that I visited your lens and took the time to study it, especially--as others have mentioned--the keyword tips. I had no idea!! Well, a very limited idea. Thank you for sharing what you've learned. I feel as if I've progressed many months in knowledge today! My confidence level has risen considerably. I know I'll be back to your lens, using it as a reference manual.

Great tips from a superb lensmaster! I loved, loved, loved :) #5 because I think we can get so caught up in lensrank that we lose track of why we came here in the first place...to write about our passions, social network, and to give help and support to each other. Hope you added this to The Answer Deck!

What a great and helpful lens. I agree that the keywords are so important for lenses. The main keyword should always be in the http: address and in the Title.

I am a newbie, well been here a month. I have read so many different lenses and I'm still confused but the one thing you mentioned was key words, that is something I didn't realize. I'm learning something new everyday. But I'm far from being a Giant Squid! This lens was really helpful. Thank you for the info. 5*****
  • Pukeko Jun 25, 2009 @ 6:03 am | delete
Thanks. This was really helpful- especially the 10 second rule. I think I will go and review all of my introductions - one by one.
  • sittonbull Jun 24, 2009 @ 11:52 am | delete
Although I've squidooed since Jan, I'm still a relative newbie w/only two published lens. Even though I love Squidoo and plan to make many more lenses, other obligations have limited my time in 2009. You have kindly blessed me in more ways than one with an angelic visit to my Inspiration lens and with these great tips for future lenses. I'm thankful for both of those blessings! Keywords take on new meaning now and I really like the extra time you took to explain their importance. I'm LRing this to my Learning lens, favoring it and rating it with the five stars it deserves.
  • scooterqueen Jun 23, 2009 @ 6:49 pm | delete
so glad to read these helpful words.
  • sittonbull Jun 23, 2009 @ 5:11 pm | delete
I'm still a relative newbie and I appreciate these great tips from one who has been there and done that. I particularly appreciate the keyword tips. For whatever reason, I have never really tuned that in fully, but it makes sense - to be found ... it seems you have to leave a good clue... through keywords. I'm LR ing this to my Learning lens. Thanks so much for flying by my Inspiration lens for your visit and for your wonderful blessing... Made my day! .

I cant believe I have only just found this lens - brilliant!
  • wayfarer Jun 22, 2009 @ 11:37 am | delete
What an inspiring lens! I enjoy Squidoo very much as well. Though I don't have Giant Squid status yet, you've inspired me to try. 5 stars!
  • Evergreenhelpline Jun 22, 2009 @ 8:35 am | delete
Really helpful. thanx you so much. I will make sure I follow these tips.

Point 8 (never sell garbage) is so true. I like point 10 (time management) too - it's something I need to learn.
  • spanncakes Jun 21, 2009 @ 8:58 pm | delete
I see why this is one of the top ranking lenses. Just signed up today, and I am so excited to start the whole Squid-venture. What an awesome and informative article! Thanks!

I am a newbie and this lens was very helpful to me. I would love to become a giant squid and you let me know that it is going to take me a while to make quality lenses as well as getting them to the status that they need to be. I will take you advise and have a great time making lenses and establishing my business. Thanks.
  • California_Dreamin Jun 20, 2009 @ 5:28 am | delete
Thanks. This is one of the best Squidoo tips lenses I've read. I think I'm really beginning to get my head around what I need to do to succeed on Squidoo.
  • ChapelHillFiddler Jun 20, 2009 @ 4:48 am | delete
I'm too new to have had an "aha" moment, but I see that although I already had a lot of online "voices" including a personal blog, two band websites, a wedding band website, a personal business website, and two blogs ON my websites (jeez it looks appalling when I put it on paper), still - there are things I can write on squidoo, and want to, that don't belong in any of those places. I also see that there are friendlier, less impatient people on squidoo who are theoretically interested in what I do, and I look forward to getting to know them. Thanks for this lens, it's clear and helpful.
  • Carmel_Aaron Jun 19, 2009 @ 9:46 am | delete
Thank you for the great information. I am very new and feel like I am floundering, so when I saw your title I said;"That's exactly what I need."

    I took notes, so I won't forget. I forget a lot.

Thanks for sharing what you would tell your best friend. That makes it even more credible and valuable to me.

I really appreciate you and other fantastic lens-masters sharing what you know will work and be effective

    Thanks so much

Truly a must read for a newbie like myself, I wish I had visited this lens before creating my first three lenses. Thanks for the great read.

This is a great lens, I'm still learning after 98 lenses (as of right now). I admit, it's very intimidating at first like you said, but once you get a handle on it, Squidoo produces amazing results.
  • GroovyFinds Jun 18, 2009 @ 4:08 am | delete
    Outstanding lens!
  • roamingrosie Jun 17, 2009 @ 1:44 pm | delete
Excellent lens! Very inspiring. I'm still a "newbie" and it can seem a little overwhelming at times - I've got so many ideas swimming around in my head that I want to explore with this fabulous squidoo world... but thanks for the reminders to focus on time management! Nothing's built in a day... true, true! :)
  • EagleScoutMom Jun 17, 2009 @ 1:37 pm | delete
Thanks for all the tips - I think I will go back and re-evaluate my keyword research because I feel that I have worked so hard on my 8 lenses - really spent time on them - and still no profits. I'm missing something important and I don't know what it is. It is getting frustrating. I will keep on squidooing !
  • knightsatwork Jun 17, 2009 @ 12:16 pm | delete
Good information. There is soooooooooooo much to learn. I think it would be easier if I were studing for my PHD. Oh well nothing good comes easy I guess. The learning curve can be very.......well curvy. Love the page. Thanks

Great post! Well, this has definitely helped heaps since I am here only 1 day! Lol.. But, I tried to incorporate your tips to create a lens. Check it out and tell me what you think!

Very nicely written. This will definately be an inspiration to newbies and veterans alike. I've always wonders if Giant was worth, but I'll continue on my slow and steady path to get there.

I was very impressed with your article! I have to say that I am guilty of what you brought up about just writing an article, and waiting for the money to roll in. Thought it sounded a bit simplistic, but who was I to argue? I'm just a newbee here, and the people who claim to be making billions of dollars a day here, certainly know more than me. Or is it "I"? Your article surely made things much clearer in my mind, and I REALLY appreciate it! Thanks!

Tobe honest I'm not sure I'm there yet. This page however, has got me thinking I might be thinking too hard on these things. I might just need to loosen up and write. Thanks for the nice KISS (keep it simple stupid) page. I think today when I sit down to write again I'll just relax and go. I did love the page.
  • mulberry Jun 14, 2009 @ 4:50 am | delete
How many times have I thought this? Wow, there are so many things I wished I had known back when I first started...it's a constant process. Nicely done!
  • gourownway Jun 13, 2009 @ 12:58 pm | delete
As a newbie I really think the number one thing here is remembering there is a slice for me here. Your lens was a reminder of that, thank you. It's hard to keep that in mind, when you think you have a great idea then see that 10 other people had that same idea. Now the thought is, "How do I make it better?" Thanks for the info!

Thank you much. I'm still processing my idea for a lens and you sparked some direction... Thank you. I'm excited, overwhelmed and excited some more that I don't want to sleep. It's a good thing that you put the time management part as your last point.

I'm excited to master this animal so that I can teach other how to maximize their internet usage for a greater good. Too many people are using the internet as an arcade shop using flash games. Haha. I find it a waste bandwidth... but hey, it's a "de-stressefier..."

    Thank you again.

Yesterday was my first lens...took me 4 hours! I thought I was drowning in a sea of technology...when I finally came up for air, I wished I had never started....but then I found a wonderful lens from Kelly stone Marketing and she gave me hope...today I find this lens and my faith is restored. I can do this and I will master squidoo. Thank you, I'm off in search of wonderful lenses like yours to soak up!

My greatest Aha Moment was about your keyword as a basic Ingredient. Thanks so much for the great tips on this lens. I am trying to become a Giant Squad and with every lens I create I learn something new.

Another newbie joining the ranks of "duh" moments. Excellent lens, it might have just given me the boost I needed. As another work at home mom, I completely understand about the time management issues! If you have all day, the task will take all day. :)

Thanks for such an informative and well written lens. I started with Squidoo a year ago and did not really understand what I had in my hands. I recently decided to act like I was brand new and start all over again. This should be one of the must reads for newbies.
  • CCGAL Jun 10, 2009 @ 10:51 am | delete
Thoughtful and well written tutorial for newbies. I especially liked #9 because I think taking the time to write meaningful comments is good for both lensmasters. Not only do you, as a comment writer, get to impart kudos, but leaving a remark that shows you connected with something in the lens gives future readers an insight into your world and you might get an extra visit or two out of it.

I know that when I get specific comments, I am much more likely to take the time to go visit that thoughtful lensmaster's profile and visit a lens or two.

I also very much appreciate private comments when somebody notices a typo or if a link has broken, and so I like to help others in that area whenever I can.

What can I say? Five starts and a fav!
  • OhMe Jun 10, 2009 @ 7:19 am | delete
Ohme! I have been on Squidoo for almost a year and learn something new almost everyday. You have really listed some important information here for newbies and not so newbies. I still have problems with key words but am learning, I hope. I am still a lensrank addict but at least I am aware of it. Thank you for putting this great lens together.

I can relate to this lens a lot having just started in the end of March. My cheeks are still red from some of the stupid mistakes I have made. After a pretty good start my dashboard now has tumbleweeds rolling around lol ! This really encourages me to continue, bringing in traffic from outside Squiddo is for me the hardest part.
    Thank's for sharing !
    Take care,
    Robin

Agreeing with others. These are handy tips. There is a lot we learn the hard way through trial and error. But there's no reason why we can't learn from others' insights before making the boo boos!

This is such good advice, and it made me feel calmer and more focused. Since having only 8 cents pay from Squidoo, I already started thinking is this worth my time even though I have had lots of fun with Rocketmoms. Now I know how to continue, thank you.

This was very useful to me because I just started and I only have 6 lenses. I am revolving my lenses around keywords and they are moving up in Google but I've still only made $1 in three months. This lens helped me feel better about that because I was starting to feel discouraged a little. Thanks for sharing! **5**
