Why You Need a Squidoo 101 Crash Course

Squidoo is arguably the most important social networking and marketing site on the Internet right now. What started out a few years ago as a way to share information has become a colossal venue for information sharing, networking and even making money. But everyone needs a little Squidoo 101 course to master it all.

Created by entrepreneur and marketing guru Seth Godin, Squidoo allows users to create one page websites, called lenses, that offers viewers the full gamut of topics and media. You can find Squidoo lenses about cupcakes, complete with how-to videos.

You can find lenses about Internet marketing, porcelain painting, personality types, skiing, and everything else. Many of these lenses are there simply for the purpose of sharing information or entertainment. Others are there to promote products. Either way is acceptable.

Getting started with Squidoo is not difficult. You need only to create an account to become a lensmaster - that's a person who creates Squidoo lenses. Being a lensmaster is fun and it's a great way of making connections with people who share your interests.

Learning how to build a Squidoo lens is easy, and when you know what you're doing, it can be a wonderfully creative and fruitful experience. Create enough great lenses, and you might find yourself a Giant Squid!

Good lenses get recognition within the Squidoo ranking system, but Google also loves Squidoo, so it's common to find good lenses indexed on Google. For really awesome lenses, Squidoo might bestow the Lens of the Day honor, which brings lots of attention your way.

Whether you're thinking about making Squidoo lenses for fun, or to bring more attention to your business and your products, either is fine. Take a Squidoo 101 lesson as well, and you'll find that the experience is fun and that it will expand your horizons.

The Basics: How to Build a Squidoo Lens

You've heard enough about Squidoo to know that it's a good way to promote your business and your brand if you're an entrepreneur, and it's also a fun way to get the word out about something you care about. If you're ready to get started, you need to know the basics of lens building.

The first thing you need to know is that a lens is like any other web page or blog in the sense that if it's not interesting, informative and easy on the eyes, people aren't going to like it. Lenses must contain good information that gives your reader something to think about.

Lenses must also be pleasing to the eye, so not too busy or full of distractions. Now that I've said that, I will also tell you that your lens can't be boring, either. You have to create a nice balance.

When you are getting ready to create your lens, you might want to explore Squidoo and look at a whole bunch of other lenses - both related to your topic and unrelated. You'll be able to tell the difference between a good lens, a so-so lens and a bad one easily. Study the good ones and learn from them all and learn from them.

You can choose lens topics in one of two ways. First you can choose topics that you are passionate about. Second, you can choose topics that you know are popular. What you do will depend on your reason for creating a lens in the first place.

Once you've chosen your topic(s), studied other lenses and collected some ideas for making your lens interesting and informative, you've got the Squidoo basics and you're ready to get started!

You've Created a Squidoo Lens: Now What?

So you've created a Squidoo lens or two. Good job! But now what? Why not learn how to make money with a Squidoo lens?

You might think that only certain kinds of lenses are good for earning money on Squidoo and surely your lens about firewood isn't a prime candidate for earning money. Oh, yes it is! Place an Amazon.com widget or three on your firewood lens and sell books about camping or heating with wood, or sell earth-friendly firewood. Or connect with Cafe Press and sell Happy Camper t-shirts or mugs (campers love campfires and firewood).

You get the idea.

If you're an entrepreneur, you can market your own info products or someone else's on your Squidoo lenses and make money that way. Squidoo lenses are awesome for branding yourself and generating excitement about your business and products. Why not sell your products there, too?

Don't let your Squidoo lenses miss out on their full potential. Making some extra money with your lenses is a great idea, and Squidoo doesn't mind that people do it. In fact, Squidoo loves it because it adds more great quality lenses to the line-up, and attracts even more people to Squidoo.

If you've got some Squidoo lenses, of course use them to inform people about your topic, but put them to work doing extra duty. You can offer your own excellent products or someone else's to attain extra income, too.

    Wonderful lens, loaded with information!
I am new to Squidoo--and already love it! I only wish it was easier to add links and photos (more like Blogger). Also, how do you keep the creative ideas flowing?
