Chapter 11 - Family Tree

How to create a Family Tree.

Chapter 11 - Family Tree

Last April, I discovered a great online resource for creating family trees. It is called Tribal Pages www.tribalpages.com It is an easy to use system and its user interface is very similar to Squidoo. You can add names and relationships and dates and photos and links%u2026 and the system is kept on line and accessible anywhere via the web. It has a password protection and only accessible to family members if you choose to lock it. It has some additional features that are neat. You can see a view of 3 generations of people. You can find relationships between any two individual. It has an events center to remind everyone of upcoming birthdays. It allows for photo albums to store those special memories by category. You can add as much or as little information as you wish. It only cost $15 per year to maintain. You can even export the data to a standard GED format to be imported to other genealogical programs. Over about 3 month's period, I was able to locate and create approx. 115 names from my family history. I sent the link to my family members and they were very well received. I only wished I had discovered this sooner. Some of my older relatives have passed away and the knowledge they possess is lost forever. Recently, I discovered a written document, a little over 2 pages of Chinese text that was written by my uncle. It described my paternal family history going back 3 generations from him. It was a treasure found. I had it translated and posted the translation on the site along with the original images. It is a good source of information for future generations. I'm sure they will not be able to read the original text. I can barely make out some words.
How does this relate to Squidoo? Not much. Except, I decided to create a lens and teach others about family tree. I included some of my personal success stories to inspire others to do the same. Time is a terrible thing to waste. If you have the time, don't hesitate to interview your older relatives about their history. During family reunions, it is a great way to break the ice. The web has change the way we transmit information. We can now capture all the relevant information about a person, a family or a group. It will be stored on some server for eternity. Someday in the far future, some distant descendants will be able to read about our accomplishments and our thoughts and our philosophies. What a great way to learn about one's roots.
