How To Use These Banners

It's really simple - promise.

Step 1 - Right click the image you want and choose "Save Picture As". Give it the file name you want.

Step 2 - Upload the file to your server or to a free image hosting site.

Step 3 - Use the following code to post the banner and send those who click through to your referral link:

<a href="http://www.squidoo.com/lensmaster/referral/YOURUSERNAME"><img src="http://yourimageaddress.gif" ></a>

That's it! Now you're ready to roll :-)

Why Animated Gifs and Not Flash Banners?

While Flash banners are VERY cool and deliver a higher image resolution, every user will not be able to use Flash banners on their sites, and er uh, we can't display Flash banners on Squidoo, either!

:-P

Furthermore, the code for embedding Flash elements is a little more complicated, so for user friendliness, animated gifs are the way to go. The files are also smaller, which is pretty awesome, too :-)

How To Create Your Own Animated Squidoo Banners

It's really easy to make animated gifs when you have the right tools. So, if you're interested in how to create your own, you're in the right place!

The various effects are created by stringing together a series of frames. Some animations only contain 3 or 4 frames: a number with alternating text, and one that leaves the text area blank. Then alternate the frames with text and the blank one in the series, and voila!

Fade effects are created by increasing the transparency of the image or text you want to fade in (opposite for fade out) and save the image at various levels of transparency (in equal increments) and string those images together so that, when played in sequence, they create the illusion that the image or text is fading into (or out of) view.

The Tools I Use To Make Animated Gifs

To actually animate the series of images, I use Ulead Gif Animator. It's very simple to use: just open an image, and frame by frame just add a frame and then add an image to each frame that you add. Then edit the amount of time each frame is to be displayed, and ba da boom, ba da bing - you've got an animated gif.

I actually use Adobe Photoshop to create the images, but if you're not a graphics designer, you may not want to shell out the hundreds of dollars it costs to get that program. If you are a casual image editor who just wants to try your hand at creating banners and other simple stuff, try the Ulead PhotoImpact program. It's not quite as hot as Photoshop, but it's MUCH cheaper, so hey....

;-)

NOTE: Ulead Gif Animator is not compatible with Windows Vista.
