Everyone Needs A Fan

Well, okay, I guess there are some real stinkers who don't deserve any fans--naming no names, of course--but let's not talk about them, shall we? This is a happy lens.

Smiles up!

So, to me, having a fan is like getting a pat on the back with a "Hey, you're a good egg" or "Wow, I really like what you did!" thrown in. We all need some of that in our lives.

And here on Squidoo we get it, often from people we don't even know. Isn't it fun to click on our own profiles and find, lo and behold, we have more fans today than we did yesterday? (C'mon, you know you look.) It's a good feeling, isn't it. Matter of fact, if I happen to be a little blue, looking at that column of fun, colorful avatars under "My Fans" always lifts my spirits.

Lately, I've been reading a lot of discussion in the Lensmaster Lounge about Squidoo fan clubs. Why do we join another lensmaster's fan club? What about Squidoo newbies, some without even a single published lens, who already have five, ten, even a hundred or more fans? The responses have been as interesting as they have been varied. Meaning, very!

Well, this got me to ponderin', wonderin' about Squidoo fans, and, tah-dah! This lens emerged.

So I hope you'll join me in turning the spotlight on the audience for a bit and share your answers to some questions, duels and polls about Squidoo fan clubs. And then there's a fan club game I want to play. Let's see how far it goes!

Squidoo Fan Clubs: Why Do You Join?

There are no right or wrong answers! And you can definitely have more than one reason. So add as many as you'd like, and if you see one or more you agree with, vote 'em on up.

Reciprocal Fanning

Do you or don't you and why?

If someone joins your fan club, do you always join theirs?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes....

tandemonimom says:

I try to join fan clubs of my fans; unless they are really bad (spammy or porn) I will join.

ClassyGals says:

Yes, unless their lenses are spam.

blue22d says:

I confess, I do. It seems the polite thing to do. I have quit clubs as well.

LaraineRose says:

I guess I'm a softie. I usually do. The lens has to be VERY BAD for me not to reciprocate.

vickysplace1 says:

I do, it is a way to show appreciation. If someone cares to look at my stuff and rate me and join my fun club it makes me feel great. I want to treat others as they treat me.

andreaberrios says:

Of course, it's all about supporting each other and this is about network. The only time I don't join is if I find their work offensive! But that's very rare. Squidoo is a beautiful family! Let's support each other.

boshemia says:

I usually do unless I find them highly offensive in some way (like nothing but crappy affiliate lenses with 0 personality) I don't like to be used, but I always appreciate good information and great writing skills.

Tipi says:

I like to reciprocate!

No...

newbizmau says:

I'd rather be known for my honesty and integrity than to be a fan just because. Getting fans and keeping them should be a rewarded effort if your content is of their interest.

WindyWinters says:

Sorry to say~No. I only join fan clubs if I'm interested in what they've written and they are a good sport. You have to be a person that thinks, shares and cares. If you don't, I will "unfan" you.

inkserotica says:

I only join a fanclub if I'm interested in their topics and I see them as a friend :)

spirituality says:

Usually, yes. But I leave if they are annoying in their squidcasts.

EagleBayDesigns says:

No, I don't always join all the fan clubs. I usually check to make sure that their lenses are of good quality. Most of the lenses are very good. I'd say that I probably join about 95% of the fan clubs. ~ This is a very good topic for a lens by the way. ~

Mortira says:

I join a Squid's fanclub because what they've done - in lenses, blogs or on SquidU - is impressive. I do try to visit my own fanclub when I can and comment on a lens or two.

Aquavel says:

Not all. ~ I always click to see what they've written and I would say I've reciprocated 95% of the time. As for the other 5%, if they don't have any lenses or if i feel they're clearly out only to promote themselves, or if I really don't like what they have to say, then no.

cjsysreform says:

I haven't joined all of them... probably about two-thirds. The ones I join are lensmasters with great lenses and interests similar to mine, and/or who have lenses I have favorited.

Getting to Know Your Squidoo Fans

Pressin' the flesh (That means shakin' hands, ya'll! This is a family-friendly club.)

So, are you curious about your fans? Do you wonder who they are and what they do?

Maybe you're someone who clicks on each and every avatar in your fan club and visits all those profiles. And maybe you go even further and look at their lenses too. Or perhaps you just like that sea of Squids peering at you from your profile, but you don't have time to check out each specimen ... because you're just too busy making new lenses!

And, yes, those fan clubs get awfully, wonderfully big, so going through each person's goodies would be a full-time job.

Hey, it's all good. We just wanna know...

Squidoo Fans

We love you, Squidoo fans!

Okay, It's Time For Squidoo Roulette

I promise, it can be a short game (but that kinda depends on you)

So, have you ever hovered over your fan club, closed your eyes and grabbed one? That is ... have you ever randomly clicked to see who in the sea you'll see?

I have. And I do that a lot. After all, I never play favorites with my fans. I love them all! Oh, dahlings!

And that's the basic idea of Squidoo Roulette: just pick one, any one, and go for a spin.

So, here's what ya need to do...

1.First, open a new browser window, because you'll need to look at stuff over there, then answer here. Opening a new window isn't a rule, because we're all free Squids of course, but it sure will make this easier, I promise.

Okay, you have your new window open? Good, good. Now, follow along with me....

2.Open this same lens in that window. Just copy-n-paste the URL ... very simple, very easy.

You there? Verrrrrry good.

3.Now, in the other browser window, go to the profile of any Squid featured in the plexo below these instructions. (I'll wait if you wanna scroll down and look ... *tapping fin*) Personally, I'd pick the last lensmaster listed, but no matter; this'll work however you choose to choose.

Got it? Are you looking at the perty mugshot of the latest star? Feel free to pause there for a bit and check out that Squid too. But you're not done yet, so come back for further instructions when you've finished perusing.

*tap*tap*tap*.... You done? Alrighty then, let's move on.

4.Now hover your arrow over their fan club (which you are welcome to join if you so desire before moving on). Wiggle it around and up-n-down a bit (cuz some clubs are reeeeally big), then close your eyes or squint-n-blur, and ... CLICK!

Yay! You've just made another new friend! Or maybe you're visiting an old buddy.

5.Either way, I now want you to enter this Squid's profile link in the list below. Just copy it from the address bar and paste it down there. (Psst! The link should start with "http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/________ " <--name of squid.)

Where it asks for the "link title," type in this sea creature's Squidoo name. For the description, copy and paste the rest of the blurb next to their avatar--the part that starts with, "...aka Felonius Schwartz, has been a member since February 31st, 1827."

*It's okay if you see this Squid already on the list. It'll probably happen sooner or later, but just go ahead and vote them up one or even add them again. It's the luck o' the draw, folks.

Okay, I'll get us going by randomly clicking on a fan from me very own club and going through the steps below. Ready?

Have you ever seen this Squid before?

Okay, now for your homework....

Tell us what you liked best about the lens you chose.

Was it the personal story that gotcha? Did it make you laugh or cry (in a good way, of course)? Tell us why you picked this one ... even if it's because it was the only one. Hey, we all had to start with numero uno.

You can be general or specific here, long-winded (up to 500 characters anyway) or short. But, see, this is where we find out if ya really looked at the lens or just read the Squid notes. Busted!

Yay, you finished the game!

See, it wasn't that hard. And this means you win.

Actually, everyone wins Squidoo Roulette. Not only have you either discovered a Squid and/or a lens you'd never seen before or re-visited a good ol' friend, but you've also spread the love and shared the treasure you uncovered.

And, on top of that, be your own biggest fan, too, and pick a lovely lens of your own to add to your comment below.

Thanks for being such good sports, and have a wonnnnnderful day.

Who's This Ramkitten?

My Bio

I'm glad you've stopped by! So what's with the Ramkitten thing, you ask? Well, that's my trail name in the long-distance backpacking community (and now just about everywhere else), but you can call me Deb if you'd like.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail was the greatest experience of my life, and I have plans for more long-distance treks in the future. That's me in the photo, celebrating at the official end of the A.T., excited about the accomplishment, looking forward to being home again, but a little sad inside, too, because an amazing journey has come to an end. That was in 2000 but feels like yesterday, as I remember everything in such detail. That's often how it is when you're moving through life at no more than 3 miles per hour along the simplicity of a trail.

Anyhow, I'm originally from Rhode Island but now live in Flagstaff, Arizona with my mustached man, Steve, and beloved pooch, Sassafrass Tea (or Sassy, for short). I'm a Search & Rescue volunteer (love it!) and a writer of both fiction and non-. In late 2008, I began working on my own internet-based business, selling pre-equipped 24-hour packs for hikers and other outdoorsy folks. And, as a 40th birthday gift to myself, I quit my "real job" in favor of doing things I truly enjoy on a full-time basis.

Check out these great lenses...

Hiking My Way to a Novel
On September 25th, 2000, I completed a six-month journey from one end of the Appalachian Trail to the other, a 2,175-mile walk from Georgia to Maine otherwise known as a thru-hike. Along the way, I embarked on another type of journey, a creative adve... view lens
