How to Use Squidoo Highlighting Modules

I'm writing this lens on how to use the Squidoo highlighting modules to help people create their lenses . . . and to create great lenses.

It's part of a series that also includes how to use:

1. Squidoo writing modules
2. Squidoo modules for interaction
3. Squidoo selling modules
4. Squidoo promotional modules
5. Squidoo photo & video modules
6. Squidoo modules for extra fun

I've heard lots of people, new to Squidoo and not-so-new, say that they'd like assistance.

So . . .

You might be new to Squidoo and you might be staring at a brand new, mostly blank page wondering what to do next. You might feel unsure about what to include, and how. And you might feel overwhelmed and kind of frustrated about using the modules.

You might have been a part of Squidoo for a while, but you're just not sure how to create the best lenses you can, or maybe you're ready to learn a few new "tricks."

Whatever the case, you'll find some simple steps, how-to information and ideas here on Squidoo's highlighting modules. In this category, I include:

1. The Big Arrow module
2. The Blackbox module
3. The StickyNote module
4. The Most Important Thing module
5. The Talk Bubble module

I've included these because they're all modules that focus in on . . . or highlight . . . certain text or links or important points.

Check out everything in the series and enjoy this lens! If you have questions about anything here, please ask in the module towards the bottom - - I've added a space for your questions and I'll reply to them.

How to Use the Big Arrow Link Module

The Big Arrow Link is great for featuring a website, blog or lens. You could draw attention to a site that's relevant to your topic. You could point to your blog. Or you could feature a site where you're selling something related to your lens.

It's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Enter the URL (address) of the site you want to feature. Name it. And click "save."

You can see a Big Arrow Link below.

How to Use the Talk Bubble Module

The Talk Bubble module is a fun way to highlight things that people have said. Maybe you want to emphasize something you have said. Or, maybe you want to feature a quote from someone else.

It's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write the text you want to include. And click "save."

You can see a Talk Bubble below. It comes pre-designed in orange to suit Squidoo's colors and the default text is black . . . but you can change the text color by using the HTML code:

<b style="color: thecolorname; font-weight: normal;">TEXT</b>

"It's important to use the Squidoo highlighting modules sparingly."

How to Use the Most Important Thing Module

The Most Important Thing module works well for drawing attention to almost anything that's important. It might be a summary point about your lens, a really valuable thing to note, a main point that you want to make, or whatever else you want to use it for! It's like using a Post-It flag or sticker to mark something important in a book.

It's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Enter the URL (address) of the site you want to feature. Name it. And click "save."

It comes pre-designed with an orange border and default black text to match Squidoo's colors.

This is a "The Most Important Thing" Module

Squidoo highlighting modules are really fun, colorful modules that can add spark and variety to a lens.

How to Use the StickyNote Module

I love sticky notes! The StickyNotes module lets you put a cool sticky note right on your lens. You can include lists or quotes on them, or important points, or things to remember . . . whatever you might use a paper sticky note for!

It's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write a title for your note and the text you want to include. And click "save."

You can see a StickyNote module below. It comes pre-designed in yellow with black text but you can change the text color, as well as the font size.

Change the font color with this code:

<b style="color: thecolorname; font-weight: normal;">TEXT</b>

If you also want to change the font size, use this code:

<b style="color: thecolorname; font-size: large; font-weight: normal;">TEXT</b>

If you want to leave the default text color and just make it bigger, use this:

<b style="font-size: large; font-weight: normal;">text</b>

3. Take it step by step. You can do it!

How to Use the Blackbox Module

Blackboxes are versatile little things. You can use them to highlight an important point, just like the other Squidoo highlighting modules. Or, you can use them as headings for all your modules or sections in your lens. This is something I love to do. You can see it on my gratitude lens.

It's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write a title for your blackbox and the text you want to include. Choose the color of your box and click "save."

You can change the color of the box itself. You can change the color of the text. You can add links. And you can add images.

You can see Blackbox modules below that deal with each of these options.

Here's a Black Blackbox

Here's a Blackbox with the Box Color Changed to Orange

You can change the color to red, green, light blue, blue, orange or gray.

Here's a Blackbox with the Text Color Changed

Here's the code to use in order to change the font color of your text (not the title - this can't be changed):

<b style="color: green; font-weight: normal;">TEXT</b>

You can type in any color in place of "green" or use HTML color codes. And, of course, in place of "TEXT," type in your own text.

Here's a Blackbox That Includes a Link

Here's the link for the HTML color codes. The code to add a link is:

<a href="http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm">HTML color codes</a>

You'd substitute in the link you're using. And you'd substitute in the text that you want to show up as the link. In this case, I've used "HTML color codes."

Here's a Blackbox with an Image

Here's how you add an image (gif or jpg) to a blackbox:
