Ways of Making Money on Squidoo

It is not obvious at first!

There are several ways of making an income on Squidoo, but as the site is not promoted as a money-making site, it is not necessarily obvious at first!

In fact, I had been a member for a few months', and produced a few lenses, and then started to wonder why I was getting paid!

I think it is brilliant that there is a section on Squidoo for Squidoo Tips as it encourages the spirit of members helping in each other.
Together we can create a wonderful Squidland.

Show-casing your business

The most obvious reason for making some Squidoo lenses is to promote your business.

It is best to restrict your lens to one main subject, so that your message is clear. You can give a brief description, and can add the URL of your site, which helps to drive traffic to your web-site. You can link this in using simple html code, so that the link is not obvious.

Then you can use other methods of driving traffic to your Squiddo lens, and this gives you a multiple-pronged approach to promoting your business.

Commission according to lens rank

The Squidoo terms state:

"We use an automated algorithm-LensRank-to rank the lenses. We look at user ratings, lensmaster reputation, clickthrough rates, frequency of updates, inbound and outbound links, and lots of other factors and give the lens a number."

The LensRank concept is further explained here: "In early February 2006, we made a change to our LensRank calculations. LensRank (how we determine a lens's popularity) will still be based on the same formula, measuring things like traffic, click-outs, reader ratings, inbound links, and affiliate sales. ... We're now using a 14-day rolling window.... our lensrank calculations will be done using data from the past two weeks, rather than looking strictly at a lens's lifetime of publication. This will ensure that the freshest, timeliest, and most actively updated lenses aren't trumped by the lenses that perform just because they've been around longer. We're still rewarding the exact same qualities, but we're tossing the grandfather clause out the window."

Squidoo offers programs that may enable lensmasters to earn revenue through lead generation, affiliate sales, traffic to its partner/affiliate sites, and sponsorship ("CO-OP Services")

As a co-op, the Squidoo CO-OP distributes its earnings to the Members.

The Squidoo CO-OP divides incoming revenue into two sections:-

The first section is called "pooled revenue". This is revenue that is not directly attributable by Squidoo to a particular lens. There are two kinds of such revenue:

revenue from selling sponsorship ads on a Search Results page (Interesting... So, the revenue from the Google ads appearing on each lens is not included here? It seems the answer is yes, meaning that that revenue from Google ads is "attributable revenue", which is contradicted by p. 23 of FAQ - it says there it's "pooled revenue" - zuzanna),
revenue from affiliate programs that pay Squidoo income based on overall performance (as opposed to performance of one trackable lens).

Pooled revenue is being used by the HQ to first pay the overhead and then to allocate the remaining part to the lenses. This allocation is based on the LensRankAND traffic

Note: currently the details of this allocation are not being made available. While the current overall LensRank is being shown on each lens, the traffic part is not (it can be found on the Dashboard - for last 7 days and in the Stats (lifetime traffic). Also, the lensmasters do not know how the revenue is being allocated.

The second pile of earnings is called "attributable revenue." This is revenue that is being tracked directly to a particular lens.

Attributable revenue is being used to:
pay any remaining overhead (wasn't that paid already?) and then distribute the CO-OP share (50%) directly to the lenses that earned it.

The best way to get a good ranking is to build a lens with good, informative data, and on a subject which people want to read or need

How does the Adsense Split Work?

Squidoo splits its Adsense revenue with lensmasters, on a 50/50 basis.

The money is then distributed based on lens rank.

There appears to be 4 distinct Squidoo payout levels, with the cut- off roughly being the following:

Tier1: LR Below approximately 2,000 ??
Tier2: LR Between 2,000 and 10,000 (Approx.) ??
Tier3: LR Between 10,000 and 100,000 (Approx.)??

Payout Levels:

Tier 1 : $8.09
Tier 2 : $1.38
Tier 3 : $0.07
Tier 4 : $0.00

This income is added on to your direct lens earnings (the earnings that show up on your dashboard) at the end of each month.

Referral Income

This one took me a while to notice!
Perhaps I am just slow!

I have only just noticed when I have looked at My Stats that there are 14 referrals who have signed up under me!

This may not sound like a high amount. However, I have not even tried to promote Squidoo so that is a great result!

It states that when those referrals earn $15, I shall receive $5. Now again $5 does not sound much. However it all adds up!

If we put our minds to promoting Squidoo, it must be relatively easy to get a lot of sign-ups. The beauty of it of course is that we are promoting a FREE service, which helps other people to promote their business or hobby.

Squidoo give us a referral URL on our page, and we can either invite people from that page, or advertise the link, and we get credited when people join. This is an easy way to add to the income achieved here at Squidoo.

This is a work in progress!

As I find new methods of making money on Squidoo, I shall add them!

My first impressions of the life and challenges that retirees face after retiring from paid employment. As a retiree myself, it took me quite some time to adapt to the fact that I didn't have to get up so early to prepare for work as usual. Then I missed the office hustle & bustle, even the coffee breaks shared with colleagues. The next challenge was the reduction in earnings. This was very critical as two years ago, my husband was hospitalized for over three months, & our children were still in the university & we had to contend with increased expenses. When my husband recovered, he had go in contract work to generate increased income to meet with our expenses. Another challenge we had to consider was a home to retire to. It had to be in a town or city that had good medical facilities & was cosmopolitan enough to posses the basic necessities which we had taken for granted when we were in active service. In totality we found it quite a challenge to adapt to a slower pace of life.

I've been with Squidoo for 2 months now. Today was my first payday. It was respectable considering I built my first lens on the 20th of March. I Love Squidoo!
