Etiquette of Giving: Engagement Rings 

Pledge of Many Things!

What is the etiquette of engagement rings given and accepted? Are they a straight-out 'gift' or are they conditional? Should they be returned if the engagement is broken or is it correct to keep, or even sell them? Should men be given an engagement ring too? While I have a poll module for you to answer those questions according to your own thinking, I want to explain here what has been the traditional understanding of the practice of dealing with engagement rings in general.

Rather than paying a dowry to parents, it became practice to give wealth to the new bride herself, and therefore it was an investment in the future marriage to give an engagement ring of significant value. This was an indication of a serious offer of lifetime marriage, and the investment wasn't made unless the groom was convinced not only of his own commitment, but also his intended's.

The engagement ring was NEVER a necessary feature of the request to marry, and when a ring was given, it was often as a demonstration of the style of living the bride would attain.

Of course, this changed when the economic system at large transferred from a gold-standard economy to a fiat economy (one based on credit).

A credit economy allowed a couple to live beyond their current means, pledging future income against current purchases, and therefore the expectation that an engagement ring, and a very expensive one at that, would be commonplace.

Instead of the engagement ring being a surprise, or an heirloom of the family, it almost immediately became a statement of fashion, of lifestyle, and of taste.

Certain elements of the etiquette have NOT changed, however.

First, an engagement ring, whether selected by the bride or not, is a pledge of lifetime marriage- to accept the engagement ring from the groom is a CONDITIONAL gift. It is given on the condition that the marriage be fulfilled. In the event the engagement is broken prior to the marriage, the engagement ring is RETURNED.

Once married, though, the ring becomes the property of the couple, or just the bride, depending on the laws of the state you live in. If the marriage breaks up, the wedding and engagement rings are usually community property, meaning they are assets that are to be distributed among the couple like other assets.
