Starter Package Squidoo Modules
Looking for the basics? Then you want the Starter Package modules - and you're here already!
Looking for more personalized fare? Then you want the Unique Content modules.
Like Plexo stuff and polls? Then you want the Interact Tab modules.
Looking to make some money? Then you want the Sell Stuff modules.
Looking for gadgetry and widgetry? Then you want the Widgets modules.
This is the Introduction module - it can't be moved around like the others. Its components are:
* Intro text - this stuff I'm writing right here right now...
* Lens Photo - small picture that is used to visually identify the lens.
* Table of Contents - (optional) to show and link to the following modules
* Discovery Tool - (optional) used to cross-reference other lenses
New to Squidoo? Welcome, Welcome!
this lens is for everyone, including new Lensmasters

If you're brand new to Squidoo, setting off on the journey of building your first lens can be a bit daunting. So much to do, so many strange tools and terms, so many things to write about -- and the LAST thing we want to see is a Daunted Lensmaster.
For that reason, the nice folks at Squidoo have set up a special learning section called SquidU (pronounced .. Squidoo University, I think), chockful of great articles and guidance, mentorship and marvelous articles - and a Lensmaster Lounge where we all hang out and ask, and answer, questions and such.
In addition to that, those same nice folks at Squidoo have mobilized a team of Squid Greeters, each one eager to answer your questions and help you out with confusions. You'll find many of us up in SquidU, dashing around in the Lounge and forum sections, listening for signs of Lensmasters in need of assistance. So shout loud! (place a post in the Discussion areas named New? Introduce Yourself! or Help, Please)
This is a Text / Write module
write text, add pictures, do a bit of html, all in 10000 characters

The Text / Write module is an essential and, like the engine of a car, you may not get very far without one. I consider the Text / Write module to be the foundation, and almost all of the other modules to be supportive, augmentive, icing and frosting, and use them to enhance the lens.
Once you get used to the Text / Write module, you can use some pretty nifty CSS tricks to gussy up the contents. For this box, I used a border, background, margin and padding, all inside a <p> tag-set (aka paragraph).
You can also push images into these, including the optional images to upload using Choose File from your own system. I've added a nice puzzle piece to this one - the same as my lens module.
This is the Amazon module
the title defaults to >> Great Stuff on Amazon
The Amazon module is (or can be) a moneymaker for the lens, drawing in product directly from the Amazon website and displaying it for your visitors to view and buy. You can pick up to 5 individual products to display, or let Amazon do the picking. I've tried both but have never been totally satisfied with Amazon's choices. So, to display what it does do, I'm going to pick a few that are meaningful to ME, by using the Let Me Pick option and the Help me find products function inside. The screen that shows up will present Amazon's results to a search I enter.
I've picked my five items, including a nifty Seth Godin Marketing Guru Action Figure! FLAME ON!!!
I've dragged items to rearrange them, chosen my Display Options, then added a bit of magnetic text.
Choosing thumbnail view will show only a small picture of each item in a grid - NOT choosing it will show what you see below.

This is the New Donations module
far more effective than standing on the corner ringing a bell and wearing a beard
This little module goes straight to the point. Send in a donation, to the non-profit of the writer's choice. I've selected the Squidoo Charity Fund since my own personal choice is not on there (Susan G. Komen).
Since this has a description section, I can put some formatting on it and make it look nifty - again, I use the paragraph style to add margin of 3px, padding of 10px and a pretty pink (#FFAAAA) border.
This is the DUEL and its default title is >> Reader Feedback
for when you want to spark a discussion but not a monkeybrain
Pose a question in the What do you want to ask? section.
Give two options - yes, my example is not particularly confrontational. But then again, I'm not a very confrontational person, so I tend to stay away from politics...
You could use paragraph formatting here, since this part is a module description - which by the way you can do with ALL of the module description boxes I've found so far.
Choose who you want to do the commenting - logged in Squidoo members or everyone.
Choose whether to provide immediate blurb visibility or exercise approval control.
Choose whether you want to receive pending blurb email or not - if you set approval to ON, this will email you when you have things to approve.
Choose how many blurbs to display.
Choose whether or not to show blurbee's thumbnail photos - mine is turned to Yep.
Strip (or don't strip) all HTML out of blurbs? This keeps folks from throwing links into your blurbs if you don't want them there.
Press SAVE, and let the duel commence!

This is a New Flickr Photos module
good for showing photos.. yours, theirs, randomly
I will have to write more about this module later - it is far from my favorite.
I suppose I should explain that... Flickr Photos are great - and it's a great way to get photos onto your lens. However, if you're relying on Let Flickr Pick (as I am doing below), you're relying on the tagging ability of those who put the photos up on Flickr.
This is the New Guestbook module - DO NOT USE THIS GUESTBOOK
I really really want Reader Feedback (its default) - just not here - go to end of lens
Comments can be great, comments can be crucial, comments can be self-serving (Hi, thanks for writing this lens on cooking lima beans - come visit my Used Car Parts lens).
I don't mind self-serving posts in guestbooks, but by golly I'm always wishing that the author would make them meaningful. But the weight of the Universe is not something I am strong enough to bear, so I put the onus back on the visitor for this guestbook.
I've chosen to let logged in Squidoo members be the ones to comment.
I've chosen to let comments appear ONLY WHEN APPROVED. Since this is a demonstration and I really want you to write in the REAL GUESTBOOK at the bottom of this lens. So, to be honest, I won't be approving ANY comments entered in this module, and I will NOT be getting approval emails, so the comments here will just wither and fade.
(for those who are planning to put CSS in your module description sections... the above paragraph is style="border-left: 20px solid red; padding-left: 20px;" - pretty nifty, huh?)
I've chosen not to receive approval emails since I'm not going to approve pending blurbs.
I've set the blurbs per page at a setting of ZERO - but I could type in my own number if I want. Why would I do this??! I would love for you to type in the REAL GUESTBOOK at the bottom of this lens. This one is just a demo model and there's no gas in the tank.
Commenter photos is still on its default setting of Yep.
And this time I'm gonna be a nice person and let the commenter have his HTML turned on.
This is a New Lijit Module - Well, not really
explore with me while I figure out just what the heck is a Lijit
THE REAL MODULE IS ABOVE. The description box and things that are shown in the Lijit module itself do not appear in the lens itself, or they do not appear for "some browsers" - I can't make the distinction. All I know is that nothing shows up for me except the little Lijit box.
That said - here's what's in the description box for the Lijit module (at least, here's what I wrote that you can't see):
Hm.. new terrain. I have never seen this before, so explore with me while I go figure this one out.
It appears to be some sort of search functionality, and it wants my Lijit username. Since I've never heard of it, the odds are I don't have one, so I'll establish a Lijit account while you have some coffee. BRB
----
(chooses a username)
(enters an email address)
(gets taken offsite to do the password thing)
(gets the confirmation)
----
Ok, I'm back - that was painless.
It appears that all I have to do is enter my username in the box and stand back.
So that's all I'm going to do - and that seems to be automatically accepting all 51 or so of my active lenses.
What have I got myself into!?
This is a New Link List Module
link lists are both fun and a total pain - your choice
This is a backbone that I rarely use (well, rarely use well).
I'm not going to demonstrate it in all its glory for now - instead, I'm going to make a link list of ONE link.
- The Wine Lass
- I'm choosing The Wine Lass for this list since it's one of my family of websites. It's still new and could use some visits and blogging and love. In return, you can get great wine, gourmet, coffee, tea, spa products and adventures - how fun is that!?
This is a New Poll Module
this is also one of my favorites!
The Poll module is one of the best ways to get people's feedback (right up there with the guestbook, without the HTML) - or at least feedback in a constrained sort of way. You devise the question, you devise the responses - the result is a clickable one-choice response.
Allow me to demonstrate:
This is a new Prediction module
and for some reason, its default title is >> Reader Feedback
Well, hm. First time I've seen this module, so I can't comment on it right off the bat. Let's experiment, shall we?
I'm going to predict... When I push the SAVE button, this will be added to my lens...
I'm going to set it to let everyone comment... with immediate approval... no email... showing 5 predictions.. showing commenter photo thumbnails... allowing HTML (I may regret this later...)
... and I predict when I push the SAVE button, this will be added to the lens!
By golly I'm good.
My prediction:
Caseyfern, at 2pm on September 26, 2008 predicts:
When I push the SAVE button, this will be added to my lens... wanna bet I'm right?
Reader predictions:

awelldressedbullet, at 6pm on October 13, 2008 predicts:
Wow, you must be psychic! Look, it was added to your lens! LOL
ZBT, at 4pm on October 4, 2008 predicts:
That I hope that your prediction is accurate, for my sake!
Fetching predictions now... please stand byThis is a New RSS module
defaulting to New RSS: Add Your Own Feed
RSS is fantastic stuff, I say. I say this because everyone else tells me so as well, encouraging me to get an RSS reader and have at it! I don't do that, since my browser handles RSS all on its own, so I don't know what I'm missing out on. But since everyone else says it's fantastic stuff, and since I've used this pretty nicely with my News lens, allow me to demonstrate why you want this too.
First, pick a source URL - this is where the RSS will be coming from. I'm going to pick.. lessee... one-woman band. This is a brand new social network developed to provide sharing and support for women who own small and micro-businesses, and I'd love to get the word out!
I'm choosing its built-in feed address (let's hope this works), 25 headlines, no excerpt, rapid (30 minute) updates, and HTML.
Now, without lifting a finger, you can sit here and watch everything that's happening on this new social network! Or if you're a woman who's launching or running her own small business, and want to gain some support, you should join us as well!
</blatant promotional blurb>
Fetching RSS feed... please stand byThis is a New Table of Contents module
yes, it's not the same as the Intro's Table of Contents
I'm not sure which I like better - this module or the one included in the Intro module (an option you can flick on and off). I'm including this separate module to show what it can do.
Normally I'd put this right up at the top of the lens, but since this lens presents the Starter Package in alphabetical order, I'll leave it stuck down here, out of place like a sore thumb.
This module has an edge over the Intro module's ToC in that you can choose which of the modules to EXCLUDE. Why is this great? Because you don't have to include every single module in the lens including the ones you use for graphics and stuff.
I've chosen to display EVERYTHING, just to demonstrate the module at full power.

This is a New Twitter Follow module
and I'm going to follow myself like a house of mirrors!
Another first for me, so you get to learn as fast as I do.
I'm rapidly falling into the trap of Twittering everything - everything - Everything. Some call this 'microblogging' - sounds like a good enough term.
I put in my username >> caseyfern (and you're welcome to follow me over there if you want).
I give myself a title - how about Queen of the Bayou? Good enough, I guess, considering I've never been to New Orleans nor met a bayou face to face.
Then I push play, wait to publish, and grab more coffee.

This is a new Reviews from Yelp module
guess we'll find out what a Yelp is...
This looks fun. Never used it. From what I can see, it is going to track down data about my choice of category, localized to my choice of zip code.
I'm putting in Shopping in 90210, and leaving the results at the default of 5 reviews.

This is a New YouTube vids module
for when the picture's thousand words needs to be amplified
Video has taken the front seat. I've pushed some video onto lenses in the past, so I know from previous experience that this is one of the more stable and solid modules.
Pick a video or let YouTube do the picking - choose whether to show ONE or a BUNCH.
In this case, I'm letting YouTube pick 9 Seth Godin videos. Don't let my bad case of hero worship fool ya. He's earned his street cred and I'm an avid fan.
This is a Text with BIG Picture Module
new in October 2008

This new text module allows for the addition of REALLY big pictures. MUCH bigger than what we've been allowed to use in the past.
This is a REAL POLL!
not just a demo like the one in the sections above...
... and I really want your feedback in this one! This is not a demo module for explanatory purposes. This is the real McDeal!
And now for the true Reader Feedback module
yes, please write in this one
Please leave your Reader Feedback here instead of above, since the one above is just a demonstration model and has been off the showroom floor only four times since it was built. Low mileage, still got that new module aroma. So take this one out for a nice long drive, and happy Squidoodling!
