Squidoo's Unofficial Procrastination Primer

Chapter 1: Calling All Procrastinators!

This lens is for you. Nobody has to tap you on the shoulder; you know who you are. You're the one who has a gazillion good lens ideas, but need five extra hours in your day to decide which one to pursue. You're creative and funny and smart, and happiest when you're researching or scribbling notes...or daydreaming about how great that next lens will be.

But there they sit, big blank Works in Progress, while your brain creaks and sputters in overdrive. Sound familiar?

This is Chapter 1 of Squidoo's Unofficial Procrastination Primer series. Stick around. I promise to continue on to Chapter 2, unless the creeks rise or the oven timer calls, or it hails and knocks out my electricity.

Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. ~William James

"Procrastination"

Tales of Mere Existence

This is SO accurate a description of procrastination, it gave me the shivers.

Death by Procrastination

You're revved. It's Monday morning (or evening or 3 a.m.) and you've penciled in a block of time dedicated to creating a new lens. You've gathered the necessities--water, snack (almonds or M&Ms work well here), and cell phone so you won't have to chase it if it rings.

Oh, but wait. Is that the dryer buzzing? You know what'll happen if you leave your clothes in there too long. Better hang them while they're warm and wrinkle-free. Ah, there...back in the chair. Ok, here we go...

Did you notice? You missed your niece's birthday! Ohnooooo! Better get that birthday card in the mail ASAP or she'll think you're slipping in the memory department. You don't want the whole family labeling you senile, do you?

Besides, that WIP lens can wait. That's why it's called a work in progress, right? It's not like it's going to grow feet and trot away.

Now, where was I? Ah, yes. The Intro. This is my least favorite part of a lens because...well, because it's just not as fun as a Plexo or links list. I'll skip the Intro for now. I can always go back to it later. Besides, my good pal a_willow tweeted me, and how can I possibly resist Twitter?

Help!

I'm being sucked into the Squidoo vortex. Death by procrastination is not a pretty sight.

Procrastinate? Who, Me?

Share your procrastination moments

It happens to all of us. If you say you haven't procrastinated, think again. Maybe your mom went into labor and you refused to be born for a couple more days. When you were a kid, did you put off studying for a test until the last minute? See there? You're a procrastinator just like the rest of us.

Share your tragic tales here. You're in good company!

Five Excellent Ways to Procrastinate

Confessions of a Squidooey Heart...

I generally procrastinate when...

1. I don't have a clearcut plan, and I'm in a rush to complete a half-baked lens before its time. Translation: The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.

2. I chose a lousy idea, which has been haunting me from its home in my list of WIPs, but I'm too proud to toss it out. Translation: Change WIP to RIP(Rest in Peace) and move on.

3. I ate too much chocolate, drank too much coffee, or would rather be out playing in the sunshine with my camera. Translation: Sometimes it pays to take a change-of-scenery break.

4. I have too many ideas, and the thought of choosing just one paralyzes me.

5. The weather's perfect. Get it?
