HERE'S WHAT I THINK
There's been a bit of difference and a bit of debate happening lately on the forum(s) about whether or not Squidoo Stats should be public or private. Lots of wonderful techie coding has made it possible for us lensmasters to view statistics on our lenses in order to fine tune them and to better understand where the traffic is coming from. However, at the same time that we can see OUR data, so can ANYONE else. IMHO, I think these stats should be viewable for the lensmaster's lenses to the lensmaster only.
Personally, I love website stats!
Ssh! But, keep my info PRIVATE!
BTW, what are we talking about?

YOUR TURN! Squidoo Stats Public or Private?
Go ahead, please offer your honest opinion about this and convince me that I'm wrong; i.e., that these stats SHOULD BE PUBLIC not PRIVATE like I think! Thanks!
SQUIDOO STATS : PUBLIC or PRIVATE ?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, you're right! PRIVATE!
Pastiche says:
My stats are for MY reference and use only. I publish some data on my blog - I decide what to show or not to show If stat info is a toggle to keep it private by default or to turn on public stats controlled by the lensmaster (and maybe even by lens), I could agree with that. Yes, stats are in fact already public, but one needs to know where to go to find that info. I'd rather not display all the details to the world by default.

Oh definitely private! we can elect to keep our website stats private and should be able to on Squidoo, too.

If we could be absolutely sure that others viewing our stats are doing it just to learn what works and not steal ideas then I would be fine with it.

My stats are my business. If I want to share them-fine, but I don't feel anyone else has a right to see what I'm doing or how much money I'm making.

I'm split on this. Knowing the stats is helpful but I think it's best to keep the info private.

Absolutely it should be private. I have very few lenses (so far) but I feel quite protective of any info regarding them. I know I'm not doing everything right. I am learning a little at a time and I do not want to be critiqued by just anyone...I'm quite sure I'll look like a dummy to someone much savvier "Squidoo-wise" than l'il ole me.

Like GypsyOwl, I had no idea this was public! You mean I can look at anybody's dashboard? and all of you can see how much my paycheck was yesterday? That is kinda spooky to me.

"...the same time that we can see OUR data, so can ANYONE else..." I Did NOT know this. But,I see that I am using the resources that you recommend.. so I'm OK Right?

After doing keyword research for my lens, I don't really want to give that away to anyone who views the lens.

I don't mind a bit of stats publicly - but I want most stats to stay private.

As long as there is no personal information exposed that could be misused (eg. real name, date of birth) and lead to id theft then I don't see why it couldn't be made public.
Having said that I think the lensmaster should have a choice and each lens should have it's stats set to private by default.

I'm not crazy about having these stats public. No need to make it easy for people to find and abuse this information.

Margaret_Schaut says:
I agree private, but I know what the reasoning is. If they are private then only the slick ones will have access to the information, not everybody. They're trying to help the average non-techie lensmaster have access to the same information that others get with more work. The real problem isn't the info, its how people use/abuse it.

I think the stats should be private, but they could make an option to make your stats public if you really wanted to do that.
Posted March 16, 2008
No way, Monkeybrain! The should be PUBLIC!!
Kate-Phizackerley says:
It's all public anyway. Squidaholic just makes it easier for mortals to see the stats.

"All your stats are belong to us!"
While Squidaholic does show how much traffic a lens gets, it is not really of any use to someone who wants to replicate its success. The stats do not, for example, say where the traffic is coming from, or which search terms it appears for. All the other information shown is already in the public domain.
(While being developed, Squidaholic did include clickouts stats too, but that feature was removed before it was released.)

Is this an all or nothing question? I'm with ChefKeem - a little of both :) We should be able to pick which item we want private or public in our profile info.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise - I strongly believe that my stats should be public or private! :D
