Basic Squidoo Maxed Template

If you go through the normal method of making a lens, you will settle upon a 'basic maxed' Squidoo lens. So if you go to the Squidoo homepage and click 'create a lens', or click 'Make a new lens!' on your dashboard, you will be creating a 3-column maxed lens.

This means that you will get a lens with the same template as this lens. 3 columns.

Some people think the 3 column layout is a bit to messy at the top of the page, with links on both sides of your content. There are advantages and disadvantages of this maxed layout.

Firstly, the Lensroll (list of lenses under 'More Great Lenses') is far more attractive than on an UNmaxed lens, and because there isn't a limit on how many lenses you can Lensroll to each other you could have a big list in the right column of your lens of all your lenses.

Secondly, compared to an UNmaxed lens you should earn more money from AdSense because there are more adsense ads displayed.

A Basic UNmaxed Lens

The next layout you can have is called the 'basic UNmaxed layout. The UNmaxed layout is just like the maxed version, but it has 2 columns instead of 3. Everything from the sidebars of the maxed layout is fitted into just one column, and you get a wider column for your content.

A picture of the UNmaxed layout is just below. Take a look. Personally, I think it looks cleaner than the 3 column maxed layout you just saw above. What do you think?

You can get this UNmaxed layout by going into the edit mode of your maxed lens, looking on the sidebar for the little tick-box with the word 'Maxed!' next to it. If you untick that box, your published lens will change to a 2 columned UNmaxed lens.

This is a picture of the 2 columned UNmaxed lens. It's worth looking at your lens in both maxed and UNmaxed layouts to see which you prefer.

SquidVids Lens

A SquidVids lens layout is a snazzy yellow video-themed layout. A SquidVids layout is a great choice if you are marketing anything to do with videos, youtube marketing, your youtube profile, TV shows, DVDs, video editing software... you get the idea!

You create your SquidVids lens by going to SquidVids.com and following the instructions.

There is one downside to this layout though. The lens tags are not linked to in the side-column.

This most likely DOES affect your lens' ranking in Google, so you may want to consider this when thinking about what layout to use. This could be outweighed, however, by the super cool header. The film reel.

SquidWho Layout

A SquidWho lens is a nice clean looking greyish layout that is meant for lenses you make about people.

Whatever you put in as a title will be preceeded by 'Who Is'. So your lens title is limited to starting with a person's name. Also, like the SquidVids lenses your tags are not shown as links in the sidebar. Remember, though, that your tags on these lenses do still matter. Your lenses still get linked to FROM the tags pages, they just don't link TO the tags pages. So you still get most of the benefit anyway.

So if you're making a lens about a person - any person - then a SquidWho lens is a good choice. Either that or a standard lens layout.
