Squidoo vs HubPages
HERE'S WHAT I THINK
I was introduced to both Squidoo and HubPages at the same time. Both are similar in their execution. I personally fell out with HubPages when they suspended one of my hubs for being self promoting. Ever since I have been an avid Squidooer and never gave a second thought to HubPages until Monkeybrain appeared. So, without further ado the gloves are off and the ripping apart can begin.
Squidoo vs Hubpages
What Hubpages Has To Say
--------------------
HubPages vs Squidoo - Traffic
I know that there has been plenty of discussion (and Hubs, by ......) comparing HubPages to Squidoo, a similar Web service.
We recently signed up with Quantcast, a service that tracks and makes publicly available, sites' traffic figures. Although we've only recently installed Quantcast on HubPages, so month's worth of data is not yet available, preliminary data is already available, as it is for Squidoo, so we thought we'd point you in the direction of what we've found...especially since it makes HubPages look particularly good!
Monthly unique visitors - snapshot Monday 3/24/08
- HubPages - 6,366,080 - this is a bit behind what our Google Analytics numbers tell us, but there might be some catching up to do on Quantcast's end
- Squidoo - 6,580,314
- HubPages - 94,801 Hubs
- Squidoo - 450,000 lenses (at least according to the official lens)
- HubPages - 67 visitors/Hub/month
- Squidoo - 15 visitors/lens/month
Why? We believe that maintaining strict, high standards for quality - not allowing overly promotional, spammy, content, and rewarding unique, original writing, has resulted in much higher average quality on HubPages than Squidoo.
We would like to thank you, the Hubbers, for publishing great-quality Hubs, and for flagging Hubs that don't meet our community's standards. Kudos to all of you!
--------------------
Well there you go. There is nothing like blowing your own trumpet. I have a few rebutals of my own here.
- Squidoo counts unpublished lenses in its total amount of lenses.
- Its true that Squidoo allows x-rated lenses and so it should. It proves that Squidoo is not the dictatorship that Hubpages is.
- Overly promotional! I had a hub banned for having 4 links back to my own site in it - Squidoo encourages promotional lenses. In fact, what is the point in doing a lens on promoting your site if you can't promote your site?
- 15 visitors/lens/month - we lensmasters know that that figure only applies to lenses that are ranked at 50,000+.
- Squidoo must be doing well for Hubpages to try and compare themselves with it!

VOTE: Best Competition or Possible Threats to Squidoo's Dominance

I have 0 hubs and 8 lenses. I am new to Squidoo too. I did surf around and took a look at Hubpages, Google Knol, Oondi, etc. Designwise I think Squidoo is the best - just love how smooth it feels and everything just fits together. Hubpage design team needs to work harder - it seems 1995ish to me sorry, hubbers.
Google Knol says: "A good tone to aim for would be similar to that of a textbook or a pamphlet: clinical and informative."
Clinical? That really put me off. Now why do I associate 'clinical' with 'sterile'? Reading a few articles there, I am really not very happy with the tone used by Knol community.
Well, I just started a lens where you can vote who could be the best competition (or threat) to Squidoo. Please kindly do visit this page and cast your vote: http://www.squidoo.com/squidoo_competition
Thank you.

It is mostly created for promoting something, so it should not ban pages that have lots of links to one site.

Right now one of my Hub pages is ranked #1 in the health category, where it has been all day (usually at hub, rankings bounce all around, but I'm so far on top, it's holding steady for the day) after sending a massive collection of targeted visitors to my hub.
But is has produced $-0-. In contrast, I sent the same target audience to squidoo last week and made a bunch of sales.
Hub is okay if you want to live off of adsense and amazon sales. But if you have a real product, well there's no comparison.
Hub is fun. It's fun seeing my hub on the top of the list.
But I feel like a wasted several hours sending all that traffic there, when it could have come this way and earned some compensation for the effort.
The best to you.

I only know about Hubpages based on what I read about it here, but I am tempted to check it out.

I have recently just joined hubpages but I still prefer squidoo. You can do much more with lenses and add many more modules whereas you are limited at hubpages. I have done fairly well with one of my lenses that promotes money making sites and have gained many referrals from this, so my vote is definately with squidoo

I am still trying to figure out hubpage. But right now, with so little time, I mostly do squidoo. But having both is the way to go I think.

Use them both. Why not? I find my Hub traffic and my Squid traffic to pretty darn equal. Why do would one even consider putting all their eggs in one basket, anyway? I'm going to choose Squidoo simply because it's their debate module that made this debate possible.

Squidoo for me is the way. I have looked at hub pages but the idea of having to let hubs into my adsense account doesn't fit with me to well. Squidoo on the other hand just ask for a paypal address so you can get your dough or make a donation to whatever charity you desire. just my squidoo 2 cents

We've only done a few lenses on Squidoo which seemed hard at first because we add so much to it but are very interested in trying HubPages. We keep seeing advertisements for writers to author hubpages with two links for $5 to $10 per article. Wonder how many people have Squidoo sites authored by others?

I've published one hub so far. I really should play around with Hubpages more to get a better feel for it. However, I prefer Squidoo. I like that Squidoo encourages you to promote your stuff and isn't overly strict about what kind of lenses you can create.

I just recently opened a Hubpages account and look forward to trying it out. I like Squidoo a lot. However, I'm concerned that some ebay sales that I know were made are not registering.

I think HubPages has a long way to go in terms of customization. When it's all said and done, the pages look boring.

I really like them both but for different reasons.
Squidoo is more for business usage with not so much personal connection. I have found and am using soooo much information from Squidoo that I am really gratful for and couldn't have made it this far without. A great big "THANK YOU" to all the really smart people here who have taken the time to share their knowledge and tips!!
HubPages has some really great writers who are there just for the sake of writing and not promoting products. Also, it's so great to make connections with people through the different forum topics and comments that aren't self-promoting but just people talking to other people. I really like that.
I will agree that Squidoo has more bells and whistles to play with and makes cooler looking pages than Hub.
Right now---I use them both and am curious to see where they're both headed in the future. It's about 55% HubPages and 45% for Squidoo.

HubPages doesn't go into anyone's AdSense account. We don't share revenue, we share impressions, meaning that your affiliate IDs are shown on 60% of pageviews, and ours are shown on the other 40%. This alleviates people's fears that we might be "reaching in" and getting grabby ;)

Hope this serves to clarify.

Hi. I'm the Community Manager over at HubPages, and I just wanted to contribute something to the discussion:
Running a tight ship is part of the reason HubPages ranks so well in Google, and that Hubs get indexed so quickly. It's been shown time and again that context-based SEO campaigns outperform blatant marketing, and it is in the former area that HubPages excels. Considering the traffic numbers quoted above, two links to your own site from a well-written, original hub could be deemed in many respects to be worth more to you than a lens stuffed full of keywords and backlinks.
Of course, it all depends on the angle you wish to take. Squidoo and HubPages are very clearly headed in different directions. So, while Squidoo may be better for some things (link-dropping, transparent self-promotion), HubPages outperforms in others. The debate, I'm sure, will continue.

Squidoo and HubPages have a lot to offer. On one hand, very similar. On the other, so different.
There are certain rules, guidelines, strengths and weaknesses for each. It's like sailing a boat. You know how to handle the boat and you have a feel for the currents and the wind and weather, and you're off and sailing. Change the boat, or the location, and you need to re-adjust the way you approach the changed conditions.
Those who apply themselves to the other as much as they have with the first will find both easy to use and navigate. Play to their strengths. Soon you'll find that while you may devote more time and energy to one platform that having your eggs in two separate baskets will build a more solid foundation if you're seeking to make money on the internet from writing quality articles.
My personal opinion is a split decision. I'm happy as a pig in mud that I've got two top quality sites to publish my content both run by fantastic people.

- Interesting debate :) rated 5 stars.
Hubpages has far too many limitations: I am an artist and Squidoo is much better to showcase my artwork and sales... For me at least, Squidoo is just the job.
All the best,
