Book Review Squids Will Be Squids Book ~ Like Aesop's Fables? Then You'll Love These Modern Day Fables and Be asked to Write Your Own.

Funny parody on Aesop's Fables set to today's times, Squids will be Squids is more, however, than a humorous book, it's one where the fables, as in Aesop's book, have a subtle message.. Do you think you could write a fable for this book? I do - it would probably be directed at myself. Let's see, I could use dog, cat and chicken for the characters.

Dog comes in and says "I've got a great idea! Let's do a search on Squidoo for snacks and try something different."

Chicken (me) says, "Oh no, I've tried that and it didn't work. I didn't find anything I liked."

Cat says, "I know, let's search Squidoo for a charity and make a lens especially for that charity."

Chicken says, "I've tried that but I imagine everyone donates to that charity. They probably have all they need. It wouldn't work to try that again."

Dog says, "Well, OK, let's do a lens and put in a plexo so other people can participate."

Chicken says, "Tried that too and nobody took part. I'm sure that wouldn't work."

As Dave Berry says "get my drift?" I challenge you to read this lens and then come up with your own modern parale. ... not necessarily with you as the party pooper.

Deer, Mouse, Rabbit and Squid

from Squids will be Squids

type=textFable from Squids will be Squids.

Deer, Mouse, Rabbit and Squ id sat on the steps trying to decide what to do.

"Let's go see a movie," said Deer. "Great," said Mouse. "Great" said Rabbit.

"There's nothing good on," said Squid.

"Let's play Frisbee in the park," said Mouse. "Great," said Rabbit. "Great," said Deer.

"My tentacles are too tired," said Squid.

"Let's go shopping," said Rabbit. "Great," said Deer. "Great," said Mouse.

"That's so boring," said Squid. "I'm just going to go home."

"Great," they said. Then they ran off to see a movie, play Frisbee in the park, and go shopping.

He Who....

From Squids will be Squids

type=textThere is just no way I can verbalize this in my own words so I am going to insert the text directly from the book:
Skunk, Musk Ox and Cabbage were sitting around the front porch at Skink's house.

Slowly but surely the porch filled with a terrible smell.

"Whoa!" said Skunk. "Is that you, Musk Ox?"

Musk Ox sh ook his shaggy head. "No way, Skunk. That's Cabbage."
"That's not me."

"Uh uh," said Cabbage. "That's not me."

Musk Ox and Cabbage looked back at Skunk, who suddenly became very interested in tying his shoe.

MORAL: He who smelt it, dealt it.
Important!

~Fables have been around for thousands of years. And it's no wonder. Because even thousands of years ago people were bright enough to figure out that they could gossip about anybody - as long as you changed their name to something like "Lion" or "Mouse" or "Donkey" first.~

Little Walrus

from Squids will be Squids

type=textLittle Walrus's mom told her to always tell the truth.

One day the phone rang. Little Walrus was the only one home, so she answered it. "Hello," said Little Walrus.

"Hello, Little Walrus," said Whale. Is your mom home?"

"No," said Little Walrus. "She's out having the hair taken off her lip."

MORAL: You should always tell the truth, but if your mom is out having the hair taken off her lip, you might want to forget a few of the details.

Could a young person learn a lesson from these fables set in humorous context?

No, they would roll their eyes and walk out.

Yes, they would say "OK, I get the message!"

Slug's Big Moment

from Squids will be Squids

type=textSlug was interested in only one thing - herself. She was so busy thinking about herself, she never learned anything.

Worm tried to help Slug in history class by asking her, "What two countries wre in the Spanish-American War?"

Slug looked up from the note she was writing to herself. "Huh?"

Snail tried to help Slug in science class by asking her, "What color is the great blue whale?" Slug looked up from her name that she was doodling in her notebook. "Huh?"

Then one day Larva saw a chance to help Slug change her ways. "Slug, what is that big thing behind you that looks like a steamroller?" asked Larva.

Slug didn't even look up from the friendship bracelet she was making for herself. And the last thing she said was "Huh?

The best line ever:

Musk Ox and Cabbage looked back at Skunk, who suddenly became very interested in tying his shoe. Moral: He who smelt it, dealt it.

I'd Love to Hear Your Idea for a Fable

Would your fable be aimed at a child or an adult?

  • windygig Apr 1, 2010 @ 8:36 pm | delete
Flying Pig, Giraffe, and Ibis bump into each other in the air above a zoo. Ibis and Flying Pig
pull off a plan to free Giraffe from the clutches of the zookeepers. The graceful Ibis swooped in lifting the gate latch with her powerful claws and created a distraction with her wide, wide wings. Meanwhile, Flying Pig led Giraffe out to safe hiding in the woods. Giraffe ran free.

Moral: Freedom thrives on grace and accomplishing the "impossible."
