Becoming the Top Squid is a long road and there are no shortcuts, however, you need to take the right steps in the right direction in order to stay on track.
SquidUp.org is a Digg style Squidoo Lens directory launched to Beta on October 13, 2009. You can Discover Hot New Lenses and Submit Your Own Lenses to be discovered. We will get you started in the right direction. Your Lenses will be indexed by Google in less than 24 hours and your Lens will be visited and rated by other visitors and members of SquidUp.
"All this sounds great, but give me more!". You will get Quality Backlinks from SquidUp which are very important for having a good page rank on Squidoo as well as Google and other search engines. Plus, the traffic will increase to your Lenses.
I want to use this lens as a place to discuss what you like and what to expect next with SquidUp. I will make your suggestions happen so you can have a better overall experience with using SquidUp.
As you know, we are now in Beta, so I would really appreciate if you please report any bugs or issues that you may experience. SquidUp has been tested and known to work as expected on Google Chrome, Firefox 3.x, IE7.0, IE8.0 and Safari. Ideal screen resolution 1280x800 pixels or more.
Don't be this guy...
Make the right choices and you will go far.

The choices you make now will shape your future. You have to look at the bigger picture, you have to look at your competition, and you MUST be willing to work hard and never look back.
Getting your lens on Google and other search engines is easy but getting a good page rank will take a little time and you will have to do research, but it doesn't have to take a long time. I will briefly share a few tips and tools with you that you can use for picking the right keywords for SEO.
First things first, Lets get your lens on Google in less than 24 hours.
- Go to SquidUp and Submit your Lens. The whole process takes likes 30 seconds and your lens is added to the directory. Other visitors and members can then visit your lenses and vote on them. A simple way to get discovered and drive traffic to your Lens.
Features
Take advantage of the many useful features at your disposal and get the word out about your Lens.
Some one once told me, "If you failed the first time, it was probably a good thing because you just learned your weaknesses and the reason to your failure, but you will never succeed if you don't try again and again and again...."Some of the key features are listed below.
- Submitting your Lens is as easy as 1,2,3.
- Visit other member lenses and Vote, support your Squiddies.
- Introducing The SquidUp Wall.
- Comment on Lenses, invite others to participate.
- SquidUp Bookmarklet. You can find this in your profile page at SquidUp. Make sure to add this to your browser toolbar for 1-Click submission of Lenses.
- Tell a friend feature will send an email to anyone you like. Idea is to Vote and get your Lens on Top, increasing traffic to your lens in return.
- Share, use the share link to submit your story to the social sites you visit such as squidoo, facebook, Digg or others. The idea is still the same, the more you spread the word, the more traffic you will get, I guarantee that.
- Create a Group, let others submit their lenses to your group.
- Tags, click on the tags link and see if you can easily find what you are looking for, your other option is using Search.
- Sort your view by Top Lenses Today, yesterday, week, month or a year.
- Whats New? this tab contains the recently submitted lenses that haven't made it to the front page yet. At this time, the story should have at least 3 votes to move to the Featured page. Some Lenses are hand picked and moved to Featured just because they are so cool!
- Send Private messages to other members once they are your friend.
Last but not least, let's make friends at SquidUp and help each other grow and achieve individual goals. It can only be done as a community. Remember, the harder you work, the luckier you will get. There are no shortcuts.
Hard Work + Perseverance
= Success!

The Most Important Thing
"To be a winner, all you need to give is all you have. Never Give Up!"
Here is what I do for SEO...
Do your homework before starting any campaign. You must know what you are getting yourself into.

It is never as easy as it looks, but nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it and believe in yourself. It's a jungle out there, literally. Finding your lens in the search engines is one thing but how do you get to the first page? Beyond this point, you must be willing to work hard, show perseverance and never ever give up!
I wrote this post at the SquidU forum and decided to bring it here in this lens as it may benefit others who don't visit the forums much
Look, if you don't already, I hope that before you begin creating your next lens, you spend a fair amount of time doing research on your target keywords for SEO. I hope you don't just go and start putting in keywords hoping they will work. In order to gain an edge over your competition, you have to research each keyword and see what is the competition for that keyword. Discard high competition keywords immediately. I am going to recommend a few tools that you can use to find the keyword that is going to work for you.
Go to the Google Keywords Tool and research each of your keyword. This tool can tell you what your competition density and the search volume for each keyword. If you are interested in doing some PPC campaigns for exact keywords, you can find out how much each click will cost you for that keyword. Play around with it, soon you will find yourself using it everyday. Just ask yourself, "what will the user search for?" You get the idea, it is a great tool to research your keywords for free.
Here is my favorite tool for checking Backlinks, its called BackLink Watch. Enter any URL and it will tell you the number of backlinks for that page. It will also tell you where they are coming from. Use this information to start building your own backlinks by following your competitors foot steps. Why you need to know this information? Because you want to know who you are going up against. You want to know how many backlinks your competitor site has, so you can target that goal.
Another great little tool is called NicheWatch. Research your specific Niche and your competition. You must know the waters in which you are about to jump, can you swim with the sharks?
Profit by taking your keyword research to a whole new level. KeywordSpy is the single tool that really outperforms everyone. I use it everyday for my PPC campaigns and it is one of the best investment I have ever made. Absolutely wonderful, take a look at their site and you will be able to see the difference.
You can also take a look at the Firefox plugin called SearchStatus. You can easily find the backlinks and other critical information for any site. This tool uses Yahoo Site Explorer for backlink checking.
Last but not least for now, here is a quick test to see what it will take to get to the 1st page of Google Search results.
- Search for your keyword in google. Go to the site that is at the number 1 spot on the 1st page and do the following:
- Using Ctrl-F, search for the keyword on that page e.g. if you are researching "learning scrabble", search for that. This will tell you the Keyword Density. Search engines like Google look at that as well when ranking your page, you should have your primary keyword appear atleast 3 or 4 times on that page. You don't want to put too many of the same keyword on your page because you will be penalized. This is called Keyword Stuffing and Google don't like it.
- find how many backlinks are coming to that page using BackLinkWatch. Write this information down.
- Now, go to the last site on the 1st page of Google search results, and perform the same 2 steps above. Determine its keyword density and backlinks.
I hope use can use this information to your advantage. This is certainly not a perfect formula but it works for me, I hope it works for you as well. Getting to the top is not going to happen overnight unless you go with a PPC campaign. It will take time, dedication and a lot of hard work.
I wish you the best of luck!

- About 3 weeks of programming and I have released the SquidUp Wall, but only 6 days late. My target was 2 weeks but I wanted to make it easy and familiar for everyone. My hope from this SquidUp Wall is to have a community of intellectuals who can share ideas and collaborate. A place to make new friends, learn, discover and get discovered in an easy and familiar setting.
If you haven't already, I invite you to please come and check out the SquidUp Wall at http://squidup.org. Simply login and join the rising Squidoo community.
Oh and one more thing, Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Azam | SquidUp.org

- Tons of great info here. Fav'd and 5*
Would it be possible to include what the user stats mean? For instance, ESP votes? Other than that, I'm really liking SquidUp!

- ESP is when your vote causes a story to go from Upcoming to Published. It's a measure to see how popular your entries are. More ESP means people like your posts.
Karma is a value that demonstrates how active your account is in terms of Voting, commenting etc. This is currently deactivated. I might replace this with something else, something more intuitive.

- Created a new look for SquidUp and added a few new features. Give your opinion please. This update include:
1. A modified theme. I call it the Midnight Blue.
2. Added a Featured section at the top to give more visibility to member lenses.
3. Random button. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. Try it out...
4. Improved user profile section.
5. Fixed a few bugs.
I had also created a Digg style toolbar for SquidUp....but I had to remove it from this update since Squidoo does not open inside a frame. It's a bummer because I spent a lot of time on it but ended up not working for Squidoo only.
Your opinion matters. Please tell me what you like or dislike. Also, suggest any new features to be included in the next release.

A Few Buttons for Your Lenses
Here are a few basic buttons that you can place on your Lenses to let your visitors submit or vote for it at SquidUp.
I would like to be able to have an External Vote Button where your users can vote right here on your page instead of going to SquidUp but Squidoo does not allow Javascript so I can only offer the very basic at this time. You can download these and insert them wherever you like in your Lens. Point this button to http://squidup.org/submit. You can contact me for the exact code but I am not able to enter it here because it converts it into an image automatically.
