Squirrel Trivia: Squirrel vulnerability
Squirrels have few defenses against predators so largely depend upon the use of a flight response to escape predators. They will use a whistling sound to warn each other of a local danger.
Squirrels are most vulnerable to starvation in the early spring when food is scarce. The seeds which they have buried for lean times are sprouting and other food sources have generally not matured yet.
Squirrel populations generally survive because of their ability to produce large numbers of offspring.

- Yes, it is a sad fact of our modern world that many of the smaller woodland creatures such as squirrels and chipmunks fall prey to dogs and cats. Squirrels really are actually quite defenseless it is simply their sheer numbers which keep them off the list of endangered species. Thank you for posting here.

- We had a two tier bird house, and that way the squirrels went into one level, and the birds took over the other. If one group got greedy then the other would shrill out and let the other one know that they were getting out of line. Our feeder was a fun place to sit and watch the antics of the squirrels.

- Your squirrel themed gifts ideas are all adorable! I especially like the candy dispenser. Sadly, I don't have many real squirrels in my yard. Between the hawks and the dogs they are wise to stay away. The dogs are mine, of course, but the hawks are wild predators. We just have a lot of them in our area.
