If you Can't Beat 'Em, Feed 'Em!

Sometimes no matter what you've tried, nothing seems to work to keep those bushy-tailed acrobats off your bird feeders!

How about giving the squirrels a place of their own to dine? Squirrels can be very entertaining to watch and giving them their own place to eat - far from the bird feeders - you may notice after a while they'll completely leave the bird feeders alone.

Below I've listed some squirrel feeder ideas that may help the birds eat in peace.

Tips on Feeding Squirrels

  • Place your squirrel feeders far from your bird feeders so that they don't scare the birds and they don't feel the need to visit the bird feeders.

  • There are a lot of food options for feeding squirrels. General food options can be seeds and nut mixes. You can get a wild life mix or a bird seed mix that has a variety of seeds and nuts. Choosing something with larger seeds is always a good idea.

  • Peanuts in or out of the shell, Rodent Chow (from a pet store) or field corn still on the cob are other great choices for feeding your furry friends.

  • Be considerate of neighbors. If they don't like squirrels, it's best not to encourage them by putting out tons of food near the property line.

Squirrel Cookie Recipe

Who doesn't love cookies? Another thing you can do is make "squirrel cookies". They're filling for the squirrels, so they don't eat as much of your birdseed. Here's a great recipe from Wisconsin Squirrel Connection

RECIPE:

(Note that I don't follow any specific proportions)

Put the following ingredients into a large bowl and stir:
*Rodent Chow crushed into powder or tiny chunks (You can use a hammer or coffee grinder to do this.)
*Small hazelnut, pecan, or walnut pieces, and a handful of sunflower seeds.
*Some hazelnut or walnut oil (optional)
*A bit of cornmeal (optional)
*Soft, plain suet
*Peanut butter for taste - you have to judge how much. If you can't smell peanut butter, they probably won't eat it.

Next, add a bit of flour to get a sticky "cookie dough" consistency. That's what will hold the ingredients together. Mix or knead well.

Roll the dough into small balls about the size of a walnut, or into a cookie form. Roll into some nuts or sunflower seeds. Freeze well . Squirrels won't eat it if it's mushy.

You can get creative with the recipe, sometimes I roll up the "dough" in small balls with a nut inside before freezing it, or put some on a twig or craft stick, and freeze for a "squirrel pop".

I love your phrase if you can't beat em feed em. Squirrels definitely are little geniuses when it comes to finding food. I love having them around.

Squirrels-and specifically, feeding squirrels, is one of the most therapeutic things I do. Just one look at their furry little faces and tummies, and I'm happy, whatever else has been going on.

Baby and the Family Pet
No, your cat will not suffocate your infant in the crib. The myth that says it will dates back to the days of witchcraft, when infant mortality was high and standards of hygiene were low. Someone always seemed to remember seeing a cat in the crib of a baby who subsequently died.
