The Squirrel's Thanksgiving
Acorns and Squirrels at Thankgiving Time
In Steven Kroll's delightful tale, the squirrel family celebrates Thanksgiving with their cousins.Buddy and Brenda Squirrel help their Mother prepare for the Thanksgiving Feast. They make decorations and count acorns. I wonder if they are a homeschooling family?
This loving family also learns to be thankful for each other and to appreciate having good manners.
As an extension of this book we will also be learning about Squirrels and Acorns. It is important for children to learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction so this unit study will also include facts about squirrels and explore such questions as Where do squirrels live? What do squirrels eat? What trees do squirrels prefer? Where do acorns come from? Can humans eat acorns? Come learn more about squirrels and the acorns they love to eat:
- The Squirrel's Thanksgiving
- Taking our modern lifestyles to heart, MobiStories was created to instill the love of reading in today's children.

Squirrels are rodents. The Squirrel Family includes not only squirrels but also chipmunks, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, woodchucks, and marmots.
Set up a couple of chairs, a digital camera, paper and pencils at a table near the window. Children observe the squirrels, record their activities and take pictures of the squirrels.
During Writing Workshop the children can use these pictures and observations to write stories or factual accounts of the squirrel's activities.

Little by Little, the Acorn Said
"Little by little," the acorn said,As it slowly sank in its mossy bed,
"I am improving every day,
Hidden deep in the earth away."
Little by little each day it grew;
Little by little it sipped the dew;
Downward it sent out a threadlike root;
Up in the air sprung a tiny shoot,
Day after day, and year after year,
Little by little the leaves appear;
And the slender branches spread far and wide,
Till the mighty oak is the forest's pride.

"Little by little," said the thoughtful boy,
"Moment by moment, I'll well employ,
Learning a little every day,
And not misspending my time in play;
Whatever I do I will do it well.
Little by little, I'll learn to know
The treasured wisdom of long ago;
And one of these days, perhaps, will see
That the world will be the better for me."

Poetry is a wonderful way to lead young children into topics of science and social studies.
To extend this poem:
1. Go for a walk in the woods and observe an oak tree. Compare it with other trees in the forest. Bring home a few leaves and acorns to put on the science table for observation.
2. Dry and press some oak leaves and other leaves. Attach them to index cards and play Go Fish or Concentration. Pictures of the full grown trees, bark and seeds could also be added.
3. Go to a lumberyard, sawmill, or furniture factory and learn about the different types of wood. Can you tell which kind of tree each board comes from? How can you tell?
4. Make a large Oak Tree on the bulletin board. Have children research items that are made from oak and hang labeled pictures of them from the branches.
- Simple Truths in Verse for the Amusement and Instruction of Children at an Early Age
The Oak
by Mary Elliott
Observe, dear George, this nut is small;
     The Acorn is its name;
Would you suppose yon tree so tall
     From such a trifle came?
The Acorn, buried in the earth,
     When many years are past
Becomes the oak of matchless worth,
     Whose strength will ages last.
In Summer, pleasant is its shade,
     But greater far its use;
The wood which forms our ships for trade
     Its body can produce.
And many other things beside,
     I cannot now explain;
For where its merits have been tried,
     They were not tried in vain.

To turn your bulletin board into an interactive learning center, write math problems on the leaves and answers on the acorns. Cover the bulletin board with felt and the backs of the leaves and acorns with Velcro.
The children become little squirrels scurrying through the leaves and acorns to find matches which they put up on the bulletin board. After they have been checked for accuracy they can be pulled off and stored in a basket for the next group of children.or left scattered or the next squirrels to sort.

Take A Walk in the Woods and collect lots of acorns.
1. Spread the acorns out on the table and start to look at them carefully. Are they all the same?
2. As you start to notice differences, begin sorting them into groups. Be sure to label your piles.
3. Then count to see how many you have in each pile. Make a graph to show the number of acorns in each category.
4. Write about your discoveries in your math journal.

Take your cheeky chances on this quick playing dice game of nut gathering nuttiness. Pile up points by rolling the dice and adding up acorns, while avoiding any cars along the way. State Tree: The Oak
Acorns from Oak Trees provide food for Squirrels

The Charter Oak by Charles de Wolfe Brownell
If it wasn't for the oak tree, squirrels wouldn't have any acorns. Oak trees take many, many years to grow. Some people think that means that it's not worth our time to plant an oak tree. I disagree. The oak tree that we plant today may help squirrels find food 100 years from now. We better hurry up and plant a few acorns.
- Iowa State Tree - Iowa Unit Study
- Designated as the official state tree in 1961, the oak tree was chosen because it is abundant in the state and serves as shelter, food and nesting cover for many animals and birds including squirrels.
Acorns, the nuts of oak trees, are eaten by many animals and birds. Wild turkeys, pheasants, quail, wood ducks, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, blue jays, nuthatches, grackles, and several kinds of woodpeckers are a few of the species that depend on acorns for a significant portion of their diet. - Connecticut State Tree White Oak Quercus alba

Deep-rooted in the historic tradition of Connecticut, the Charter Oak is one of the most colorful and significant symbols of the spiritual strength and love of freedom, which inspired our Colonial forebears in their militant resistance to tyranny. This venerable giant of the forest, hundreds of years old when it hid the treasured Charter in 1687, finally fell during a great storm on August 21, 1856.

Sung to: "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain"
I'll be gathering all the acorns till they're gone.
I'll be gathering all the acorns till they're gone.
I'll be gathering all the acorns, gathering all the acorns,
Gathering all the acorns till they're gone.
(Children make collecting motion with their hands)
And I'll put them all inside my little home.

I will put them all inside, put them all inside,

- Watch out for baby squirrels nesting in trees
- Most people think spring is the season when baby wildlife are born, but the local squirrel population has a different idea. Tree squirrels will often have two litters a year, one in January/February and another in July/August.
If a nest has blown down with babies in it and can be safely put it back in the tree, the mother squirrel will probably continue to care for her young. Often they have a second nest all ready in case they need it. If a baby is on the ground, it is important to try to reunite it with the mother. This can be done unless the baby is injured or cold-the mother will not take a cold baby back. - Acorn Watchers Wonder What Happened to Crop - washingtonpost.com

- Squirrels are delightful little critters to watch. I used to sit on my sister's front porch in Indiana and watch them play in her yard and 3 big trees. They were so cute, and they played together like little kids. I enjoyed this lens.

- We have an oak tree in the yard that they love. I also buy them peanuts in the shell when it is nasty outside.
