The Squirrel's Thanksgiving
Acorns and Squirrels at Thankgiving Time

In Steven Kroll's delightful tale, the squirrel family celebrates Thanksgiving with their cousins.
Buddy and Brenda Squirrel help their Mother prepare for the Thanksgiving Feast. They make decorations and count acorns. I wonder if they are a homeschooling family.
This loving family also learns to be thankful for eachother and to appreciate having good manners.

Happy Jack Squirrel and Chatterer the Red Squirrel are tales by Thornton Burgess the well known Naturalist that presents facts and observations about squirrels with just enough fiction to keep children's imaginations alive and begging for more.
Most children will be able to read these easy Chapter Books by the end of First Grade but we have found that reading these books together promotes discussion and a better understanding of squirrels and the squirrel's habitat.

Facts about Squirrels
Do Squirrels eat acorns?

Squirrels are rodents. The Squirrel Family includes not only squirrels but also chipmunks, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, woodchucks, and marmots.
Set up a couple of chairs, a digital camera, paper and pencils at a table near the window. Children observe the squirrels, record their activities and take pictures of the squirrels.
During Writing Workshop the children can use these pictures and observations to write stories or factual accounts of the squirrel's activities.

The Acorn People

Handicapped children are given the opportunity to go to a boyscout camp. The narrator is a councilor with no prior experience who learns not only to love those children but learns to see them as children, not as objects to be pitied.
In the story, the children start making acorn necklaces that serve as a way to show friendship and comradery about how to interact with their handicapped neighbors by having the Acorn People read aloud to them. Maybe Father Squirrel will read it to them after Thanksgiving Dinner.
Stringing Acorns

You can make acorn necklaces by drilling holes in acorns and stringing them on stiff string. If you dip the end of the string in wax it keeps the string from unraveling.
To make this activity into a literacy center, the acorns could have letters painted on them and the children could string their spelling, vocabulary or high frequency words.

Little by Little, the Acorn Said
"Little by little," the acorn said,As it slowly sank in its mossy bed,
"I am improving every day,
Hidden deep in the earth away."
Little by little each day it grew;
Little by little it sipped the dew;
Downward it sent out a threadlike root;
Up in the air sprung a tiny shoot,
Day after day, and year after year,
Little by little the leaves appear;
And the slender branches spread far and wide,
Till the mighty oak is the forest's pride.
"Little by little," said the thoughtful boy,
"Moment by moment, I'll well employ,
Learning a little every day,
And not misspending my time in play;
Whatever I do I will do it well.
Little by little, I'll learn to know
The treasured wisdom of long ago;
And one of these days, perhaps, will see
That the world will be the better for me."

Poetry for Science and Social Studies
Poetry is a wonderful way to lead young children into topics of science and social studies.To extend this poem:
1. Go for a walk in the woods and observe an oak tree. Compare it with other trees in the forest. Bring home a few leaves and acorns to put on the science table for observation.
2. Dry and press some oak leaves and other leaves. Attach them to index cards and play Go Fish or Concentration. Pictures of the full grown trees, bark and seeds could also be added.
3. Go to a lumberyard, sawmill, or furniture factory and learn about the different types of wood. Can you tell which kind of tree each board comes from? How can you tell?
4. Make a large Oak Tree on the bulletin board. Have children research items that are made from oak and hang labeled pictures of them from the branches.

The Oak
by Mary Elliott
Observe, dear George, this nut is small;
The Acorn is its name;
Would you suppose yon tree so tall
From such a trifle came?
The Acorn, buried in the earth,
When many years are past
Becomes the oak of matchless worth,
Whose strength will ages last.
In Summer, pleasant is its shade,
But greater far its use;
The wood which forms our ships for trade
Its body can produce.
And many other things beside,
I cannot now explain;
For where its merits have been tried,
They were not tried in vain.- 5-14 - Illustrations and photos - Natural habitats

Acorn and Squirrel Math Calendar

To turn your bulletin board into an interactive learning center, write math problems on the leaves and answers on the acorns. Cover the bulletin board with felt and the backs of the leaves and acorns with Velcro.
The children become little squirrels scurrying through the leaves and acorns to find matches which they put up on the bulletin board. After they have been checked for accuracy they can be pulled off and stored in a basket for the next group of children.or left scattered or the next squirrels to sort.

State Tree: The Oak
Acorns from Oak Trees provide food for Squirrels

The Charter Oak by Charles de Wolfe Brownell
If it wasn't for the oak tree, squirrels wouldn't have any acorns. Oak trees take many, many years to grow. Some people think that means that it's not worth our time to plant an oak tree. I disagree. The oak tree that we plant today may help squirrels find food 100 years from now. We better hurry up and plant a few acorns.
- Iowa State Tree - Iowa Unit Study
- Designated as the official state tree in 1961, the oak tree was chosen because it is abundant in the state and serves as shelter, food and nesting cover for many animals and birds including squirrels.
Acorns, the nuts of oak trees, are eaten by many animals and birds. Wild turkeys, pheasants, quail, wood ducks, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, blue jays, nuthatches, grackles, and several kinds of woodpeckers are a few of the species that depend on acorns for a significant portion of their diet. - Connecticut State Tree White Oak Quercus alba

- Most people think spring is the season when baby wildlife are born, but the local squirrel population has a different idea. Tree squirrels will often have two litters a year, one in January/February and another in July/August.
If a nest has blown down with babies in it and can be safely put it back in the tree, the mother squirrel will probably continue to care for her young. Often they have a second nest all ready in case they need it. If a baby is on the ground, it is important to try to reunite it with the mother. This can be done unless the baby is injured or cold-the mother will not take a cold baby back. - Acorn Watchers Wonder What Happened to Crop - washingtonpost.com

- An excellent lens for teachers and parents. And me. I love watching the Abert squirrels around our house in Flagstaff. They're going bonkers right now--busy, busy. They're SO cute ... but, at the same time, so intent on getting right in front of my car. I'm always stopping, honking and even getting out of the car sometimes to move them along. Such frustrating little buggers!

- Wow...I absolutely love your lenses, and will be back for more. I taught at a preschool/child care center for five years, and I love teaching material. I helped develop and gather our curriculum, and enjoyed it very much! Great job!
