How Does SR 22 Insurance Work?

Who handles the paperwork for an SR 22?

While each state has their own specific requirements for how SR 22 proof of insurance is handled, for the most part they are the same.

Most of the time the state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will notify you that you need to submit proof of insurance (SR 22) to them. The DMV is the issuing authority for drivers licenses and vehicle registrations. They also monitor statistics for uninsured motorists.

Once a requirement has been set upon you to provide SR 22 insurance proof, you can obtain your car insurance through any car insurance company or broker. Let the company or broker know that you need an SR 22 letter, and one of two things will happen.

Either the company will notify the DMV that you have met SR 22 requirements for the state, or you will need to provide the DMV directly with proof of the SR 22 insurance.

They will provide you with documentation that is specific to your states laws and requirements for SR 22 insurance.
