What is a SR22 Form?

SR22 filing

SR22 insurance, as its usually known as, is not genuinely a type of Florida auto insurance. Simply put, SR22 is the name of the form which is used by automobile insurance companies to verify that an individual is compliment with the minimum limits of liability required.

SR22 form is filed by your auto insurance company to the Florida's Bureau of Financial Responsibility, in case of course you are required to submit such confirmation of liability insurance. DUI, too many points on your license for traffic violations, driving uninsured are some of the reasons why you may be required to have SR22.

SR22 Requirements in Florida

Florida No Fault insurance law indicates that the minimum requirements for an auto insurance policy are Property Damage Liability (PDL) of $10,000 and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) of $10,000. Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) is added in addition to the minimum Florida No Fault requirements if you need SR22 Insurance. In Florida, SR22 will require minimum BIL limits of $10,000 per person and $20,000 per accident. The SR22 requirement can also be fulfilled with a single limit of liability - $30,000.

Regardless of the fact that SR22 filing is required, the premium for BIL will not be increase by your insurance company. A $15 filing fee is the only additional cost for you.

SR22 Insurance Rates

Bare in mind that, if SR22 form filing is required you will pay more for your auto insurance. Its not because of the SR22 form, but rather because of the reasons already mentioned - DUI, suspension for too many points, driving without insurance.

If you do not comply with the law, your driver's license and or vehicle license plate will be suspended. In such case, you will have to pay reinstatement fees in addition to the filling fee.
