SSAT Study Guide for Private Schools Exams

Ranked #2,387 in Education, #55,256 overall

SSAT Study Guide Essentials

An SSAT study guide is essential for preparing for private school entrance exams. The resources here should make the entire process from registration to testing day easier to manage. Pursuing a private education has become increasingly popular over the last few years and as a result, competition is quite fierce for the limited spaces available. Having your child prepare with an SSAT practice test before the real one can be a genuine boon.

SSAT Study Guide: Variations of the SSAT

SSAT National Test
An SSAT national test is a group administration held at many sites in the Canada, USA, and internationally on 8 Saturdays each year (This is the most commonly known test variety).

  • A national test may be taken as many times, as you want, up to 8 times per year.

  • Providing there is still space, registration can be done online up to the actual test date.

  • Fax or mail, up to the regular deadline is another common way to register.

  • Be prepared for additional fees associated with last minute registrations.

SSAT Flex Test
A flex test occurs on any date other than the national test dates. If you are testing with an educational consultant, you will be taking the flex test. This is essentially a pre-arranged engagement directed by a local administrative body.

  • Do not register for the "flex test" unless you have already arranged an appointment with a consultant, school or educational advisor because you need a special administration date.

  • These tests take place throughout the year but you may only take the "flex test" once in any given year.

  • Any attempts to reregister for this version of the exam (in the same year it was already taken) will be denied.

SSAT Regional Flex Test
There are several regional administrative bodies that offer tests on dates that differ from the national test dates. This type of test conforms to all the regulations of a standard "flex test". Meaning you may only take it once in any given year.

Understanding SSAT Test Scores

And the importance of a SSAT study guide

Generally, your test report will contain information that explains each of the relevant scores. You will see scaled scores that look something like this:
Scale for grades 5-7: 420-700 (V for verbal/Q for quantitative or math/R for reading), 1260-2100 (Total)
Scale for grades 8-11: 510-810 (V/Q/R), 1530-2430 (Total)

You will also see a percentage score for each SSAT category and a National Percentile Rank (grades 5-9 only). It is important to note that these percentages do not reflect the raw score of each student, but rather what percentage of students he/she was better than. For instance, if you have 83% that means you performed better than 83% of all student who have taken the private school exam within a 3 year period. So, the value of SSAT Preparation is obvious; competition is strong.
