SSD - Solid State Drive

What is a SSD / solid state drive, why would you want one, and do you need one?

Is there any reason I wouldn't want one?

Technically, you don't need a solid state drive, it is more a matter of preferences.

You may want one if you prefer your desktop or laptop to perform faster. Much faster! During all functions, including and not limited to start up, during multiple applications, gaming, while running a virus scan and even for graphics.

For storage alone, since many users are seeking 1TB and 2TB hard disc drives, then you will save money with a hard disc drive, as in a storage comparison alone, a solid state drive is much more expensive, and they are only produced at present to support half a gigabyte of storage at this time, though technology changes are happening faster than ever these days.

Solid State Drive / Hard Drive Hybrid Announced

OCZ has announced plans for a hybrid drive, named RevoDrive Hybrid PCI Express (PCIe) storage solution , where there are attributes of both a solid drive and a hard disc drive. The RevoDrive uses both SSD and HDD technology for the best of both worlds. The most used applications are driven by solid state drive performance, where the more latent data is stored in a 1TB hard drive.

The drive uses Dataplex catching software, which adjusts itself through learned behavior of the user, determining the most efficient data processing attributes, with optimum performance being the end game. This is a dream for anyone wishing they could have an SSD with the storage capability of an HDD, but are scoffing at the price. The anticipated price is $499, and the release is expected towards the end of 2011.

With the anticipated influx of users converting to a solid state drive, this is a dream come true for average users on a bit of a budget, wanting to speed up their PC.

SSD vs HDD Performance

An SSD is faster than a hard disc drive because it has no moving parts inside, like an HDD / hard disc drive. Hard disc drives have mechanical parts that move inside, which causes some lag in performance. An HDD is also heavier, less durable, but is reasonably cheaper.

I always like the videos that show the actual side-by-side differences. So even if I don't understand a technology, I "get it" better if I can see it.
