Basic Bio
What Wikipedia has to say about Severus Snape:
Severus Snape is a fictional character in the Harry Potter book series written by J. K. Rowling. In the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, he is one of the primary antagonists. As the series progresses, Snapes motivation grows more layered and complex, and Rowling does not fully reveal the details or his true loyalties until the end of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Snape appears in all seven novels of the series.
Over the course of the series, Snape's portrayal evolves from that of a malicious and partisan teacher who unfairly punishes Harry and his associates while favouring Slytherin students, to that of a pivotal character of considerable complexity and moral ambiguity. Rowling has described him as "a gift of a character".

In the fictional world of the Harry Potter series, the Death Eaters constitute a group of wizards and witches, led by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort ? the chief antagonist of the series, who seeks to purify the Wizarding community by eliminating the Muggle-borns. They also try to create a new order through the Ministry of Magic and cause fear among the Wizarding community by terrorising and killing important officials and their enemies, chiefly the members of the Order of the Phoenix.
Death Eaters recognise one another by the Dark Mark on their left forearm, a sign created by Voldemort to summon them instantly to him. Their typical work attire includes black, hooded robes and masks, as seen in the film version of Goblet of Fire (skull masks and black robes with pointed hats) and Order of the Phoenix (metal masks and more elaborate robes).
According to author J.K. Rowling, the original working title for the Death Eaters was "The Knights of Walpurgis".JK Rowling interview in full, ''BBC News, June 19, 2003. Accessed May 24, 2008. It is unclear, however, if this was her original name for the characters, or if it was the name they themselves originally assumed.
Severus Snape: Potions Professor of Hogwarts
What Wikipedia has to say about Hogwarts
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a setting in J. K. Rowling's best-selling Harry Potter series. It is a school of magic for witches and wizards between the ages of eleven and eighteen living in the United Kingdom. Six of the seven books in the series are largely set at the school, with each book lasting the equivalent of one school year. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, most of the book is set outside Hogwarts as main characters Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger do not attend their final year of school (though Rowling has stated that Hermione eventually does return to school to graduate). The climactic battle of the book, and the series, however, is set at Hogwarts.
Rowling has suggested that she may have inadvertently taken the name from the hogwort plant (Croton capitatus), which she had seen at Kew Gardens some time before writing the Harry Potter series. 1999: Accio Quote!, the largest archive of J.K.
