Keep Your Feet Healthy and Happy

By Dr. Brad Webb, DPM

Millions of Americans experience some kind of foot pain on a regular basis. In a survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association, nearly 19 percent of adults reported that foot pain inhibited them from doing their daily activities such as going to the gym.

Many types of foot and ankle problems are easily treated. When feet and ankles are healthy, people are able to lead active lifestyles and reduce the effects of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

The following foot health tips can help you avoid foot problems:
  • Wear properly fitting shoes. Improper shoe fit can cause serious foot problems.

  • Look for shoes with a firm sole and soft leather upper for daily activities.

  • If you engage in sporting activities, wear the proper shoe for your type of activity.

  • Shop for shoes in the afternoon. Your feet tend to swell during the day.

  • Never cut corns or callouses with a pocket knife or razor.

  • Use over-the-counter products only with the advice of a Podiatrist.

  • Trim or file your toenails straight across.

  • Inspect your feet daily or have someone help you check for any cuts, cracks in the skin, sores or swelling.

  • Apply moisturizer to your feet daily, but do so sparingly between the toes.
As we get older, feet tend to spread or widen, and lose the fat which pads the heel and ball of the foot, and dry skin and brittle nails become more common.

People with diabetes need to be especially careful with their feet. Frequent screening by a podiatric physician can prevent many of the complications of this disease.

Dr. Webb is a podiatric physician and surgeon who has been extensively and specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of all manner of foot conditions.

Give Dr. Webb a call, or stop by the office, if you or anyone you know suffers from any foot or ankle ailment.
