Saint Lucia Dream Island
On the day the Island was discovered by the French they named her 'Saint Lucia' after Saint Lucy of Syracuse.
The capital of Saint Lucia is Castries. It contains duty free shopping facilities such as Point Seraphine and La Place Carenage. There are many restaurants offering a variety of menus from local to Chinese; supermarkets and many other shopping facilities. The city is well serviced by a bus system and taxi service.
Interestingly, Saint Lucia's main post office is located in Castries. Because most parts of the country do not use standard street addresses, mail is largely sent to Post Office boxes. Any mail sent without a town name ends up in the Castries post office.
Saint Lucia is known for her tropical climate - the wet season is from June to November. December through to January is the coolest months with the hottest months being June through to August. The hot and humid conditions are due to the Island's close proximity to the equator but you can relax, as the mild trade winds bring plenty of cool breezes off the water.
Visitors are warned though, that there is a great deal of variation in weather between the regions on the Island. The beaches around the Castries or Rodney Bay temperatures are high but not unpleasant due to the trade winds. However, if you are trekking through the rain forest in the centre of the island, expect hot and humid conditions without any relief from the winds. And temperatures do drop significantly as the altitude increases so you will wish you had taken a light jacket along.
People mostly dress in light weight cotton to keep them cool in the hot climate.
The official language of Saint Lucia is English but the older people mainly speak French Patoisas they find it difficult to speak English.
The cuisine is influenced by West Indian, Creole and French food. A popular Creole dish is pumpkin soup with garlic and pouile dudon (chicken in coconuts and sugar). Other popular dishes are pepper pot stew, callaloo soup and fried codfish.
There is an abundance of fruits - bananas, coconuts, guavas, mangoes, papayas, passion fruit, pineapples and Sousa and plenty of shellfish and fish caught daily to feast upon. Fresh fruit juices are available and alcoholic drinks, such as beer (Pitons) and rum (Bounty), are brewed locally.
The national currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. Many tourists can use the local currency or the USA dollar when visiting this island. (Look for the big arrow - down this page - to use the currency converter / exchange rate for your dollar).
Surrounded by water makes it a dream for water sports: water skiing, jet-ski, banana-boating, sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving, and swimming or choose golf, hike, and horseback ride.

Windward Islands
Go Travel
The Caribbean Islands also known as the Lesser Antilles are made up of two sets of islands - the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands. The Caribbean Windward Islands are those that receive the trade winds first and are on the windier and wetter side of the Lesser Antilles.
The Windward Islands include Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines and Grenada.
The Leeward Islands include the Virgin Islands, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Anguilla. They're called the Leeward Islands because they're away from the wind ("lee").
Island Festivals
Anytime
Carnival is one of the major festivals in Saint Lucia. A highly traditional event, Carnival festivities usually includes competitions and performances by masquerade (Mas) bands, calypso and soca singers, steel bands, and beauty contestants.
The highlight of the celebration usually takes place during the second week in July beginning on the weekend and ending on Tuesday (Monday and Tuesday are public holidays). Following the launching of Carnival in June, Mas Camps are formed and members begin to design and built their costumes. Pan-yards are usually full of practising steel-band performers and, calypso tents throughout the island compete through a series of performances by local calypso and soca artists. During the height of the Carnival fever, competitions for beauty queens, soca and calypso monarch gets under way and Mas bands compete for king and queen of the bands, and the band of the year title.
Hangout with the locals of Saint Lucia, sample their local diet and enjoy Jazz on the Square. For the Jazz Festival is internationally recognised as the premiere Jazz Festival in the Caribbean region. This festival ranks among the top five Jazz Festivals in the world. The Jazz Festival is a series of concerts held over a ten-day period in May. It plays host to some of the world's greatest artists in the music industry. The main concerts include Jazz on the Square, Tea Time Jazz, Jazz in the South, and Jazz at Pigeon Point National Park.
Saint Lucia Flower and Creole Festivals - local culture and traditions are revealed through two flower festivals during the months of August and October. The feast of St. Rose de Lima is the festival of the La Rose Flower Society held in August while, the Feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque is celebrated in October by the other flower society of Les Marguerite. Each year, the events are hosted by a number of selected communities throughout the island which include religious services, parades, a royal court, feasting and much dancing.
Saint Lucia Cricket is by far one of the Island's leading spectator sports. The Island is usually host to a one-day international cricket game at its Beausejour state of the art cricket ground, located in Gros Islet.
